I'm thinking of picking one of these up. Any AW11 owners care to chime in on their ownership experiences?

How's the maintenance? How expensive/hard is it to find parts? Is it relatively easy to live with it on a day to day basis?
>>
>>15772181
All AW11 owners died in snap oversteer accidents. if you see posts from owners, they are internet ghosts.
>>

Excellent cars but the engine placement can be a bit of a headache to work on, not impossible, just not as easy normal vehicles. I personally think they're one of the best looking cars of their time. Snap oversteering is a meme and what oversteer it has isn't some catastrophic event that will kill both you and the car. Get a feel for the car long before you start getting hektik with it and you'll be perfectly fine.
>>
>>15772181
>I'm thinking of picking one of these up.
Oh yeah? "Picking"? Like, you're just going to stroll down to the dealer and say "Hey, gimme that one!". Really? Not considering the fact that most have long rusted and been sent to the wrecker? Are you gonna buy a new GM vehicle that possible has some of the steel previously used on an old junked MR2?

Seriously, what is this shit?

>Hey guys, I'm considering grabbing one of these 54 Desotos. Tell me about your experiences, maintenance? Good daily driver?
>>
>>15772204
Maybe for a benchracer. It's low enough to the ground and corners well enough that it feels quick like a gokart.

I've said it before, but it's some of the most fun you can have driving within, and above, the speed limit
>>
>>15772595
Tell me on the doll where the MR2 touched you

I've got a shitty fiero and if they're anything similar, driving too far above the speed limit can get downright scary with how touchy and light they are. With fuck all for aero and all the weight in the back the car starts trying to take flight when it hits small dips in the road
>>
>>15772750
The Fiero is a lower quality car with worse weight distribution, unfortunately. With properly done up suspension, I can take my MR2 up to 110mph without feeling like I'm going to slip off the road.

The Fiero has decent suspension on paper, but it's prone to understeer, and then oversteer when the driver attempts to correct by lifting off throttle in a corner.

And as far as top speed, the Fiero is known to have front end lift and become very scary above 80mph

1457106934955.jpg
3MB, 3984x2988px
>>15772829
I won't argue that the mr2 is higher quality.

My particular fiero has a rear sway bar and an aluminum v6 which balances things out rather well, but it does get downright terrifying above 110.

Probably the biggest benefit of the fiero is that it's a generic GM shitbox so you can salvage all kinds of spare parts from 3rd gen f bodies and whatever fwd pontiac you can think of. All plastic body panels also help against rust too.

either way, cheap midships are hilarious little death traps and you should check one out op :)
>>
>>15772908
>either way, cheap midships are hilarious little death traps and you should check one out op :)

This, they're a lot of fun and you won't regret the purchase assuming you inspected the vehicle you're buying intimately and you know what you're getting into. Namely that there's no trunk space and you can get yourself into trouble on twisty roads if you don't know the car well enough.

Don't push the twisties until you know the car
>>
Not OP but I found one on Craigslist with only 118k miles and no rust. Here wants 4.5k for it, is that a fair price?
>>
>>15773067
Yea, I payed 3k for one with 180k on the clock, thing still runs like a top. Make sure to inspect the car, tho. Price means nothing if it isn't taken care of
>>
>>15772829
Although the Fiero does have lesser quality, it has more lateral grip than an MR2 and can be swapped with almost any engine, including LS engines. The bit about the instability at top speed is just nonsense. The "instability" you might feel is purely because it has no power steering. People like to pretend that the MR2 is in another league or something, but they really are quite competitive cars.
>>
>>15773167
Just going to interject here. I depowered my steering rack on my RX7 and it is now a high ratio manual rack. It feels more stable at speeds than it did before. I can also feel when it's going to stop being stable much better than when there was bullshit fluid inside there.
>>
>>15773167
I will give you the bit about engine swapping, but my MR2 doesn't have power steering and the only tough part is low speed maneuvers, no impact at top speed
>>
>>15772181
Hey OP, I daily this sick piece of work and I bought it for $500 when it was a scrap bucket. Let me give you some advice.

>every bolt will always be stuck
So buy a shit ton of PB blaster and have a damn good breaker bar. Maybe an impact wrench
>parts are pretty easy to find desu.
Course I had a full parts car for a year so...
>daily driving ability is pretty good if it's your only car
Just make sure you have a friend with a truck or SUV just in case you ever need to move something larger than the trunk.

I have 0 issues with using it every single day. Plenty of room for groceries, or backpacks, or even medium sized suitcases. Makes me giggle everytime I drive it.

So
MR2 vs RX-7 FC

which is better /o/?
>>
>>15775986
As a person who has owned both.
The FC is 10x better
>>
>>15775986
I mean I own an AW11 NA and I can tell you I would much rather have an FC. But they're much more expensive all the way around. Now give me an AW11 SC AND and FC and it might be and little closer.
>>
>>15775986
>rotary
>ever
The choice is obvious.
>>
>>15776324
The old style SC in the AW wasn't all that great, sure it had some low end torque but it died up top very quickly. If anything a 20v blacktop swap in an first gen MR2 would be great.
>>
>>15772750
The last iteration of the Fiero got it right and was very solid. But by then the car already had its awful stigma of being a lemon production from its initial factory launch so the damage to its name was irreparable.
>>
>>15776389
LEMANS NOT FOR TOYOTA
>>
>>15772617
does the car itself feels light ? in the steering i mean ?
because i had a twingo that felt really light and that was really fun
now i have another shit box that weight around 1 tons and it feeel so heavy
>>
>>15776415
It depends on what size of wheels/tires you have but generally if you stay under the 15" mark driving at speed with no power steering feels really light.
>>
>>15776415
It has no engine upfront so steering is not that hard. It's not even that bad standing still, once you get going its normal but provides alot of feedback because its a manual rack. Engine is pretty fun. I've driven newer 1.6 16v but the 4age seems to have more torque then them and pulls better but I did just rebuild mine recently so :).
>>
>>15776424
ok thanks i might get one in a year or some but i'm not in the us so that's a bit tricky

It has been alot of work to repair all the rust and paint it etc. It's been 14 months since I've owned the car and I can finnaly see the finish line with the restoration. But I'll still need to redo the 30 year old suspension bushings one day :/. But I god damn love this car.

In this picture you can see the mising pannels which we're cut out due to rust.
Overall conclusion if you get one get ready to spend alot of money and time. Getting parts since you are in the EU somewhere isn't gonna be as easy as just walking in you autoparts shop and getting them. Some stuff I had to order from the USA or Japan and the shipping + taxes can be worth more then the parts at some point. But i've learned to find parts I need, depends on the condition of the car the major problem will probably be the rust.
>>
>>15776562
don't tell me you repaired that ?
or did you just swap it with a non rusted to shit piece ?

Also heavier and longer wheel base.

Aw11 owner here.

Look between this and the AW11s posted in this thread and figure it out.

You'll understand why the FC is a better choice, plus, if you give it 300 hp, it will definitely kick any Supra's ass. You think a fucking MR-2 could do that? Fat chance, since it only has a 4-cylinder engine.
>>
>>15777543

Wouldn't mind hearing more about that mr2 you brought back to life if you have the time.

>>15777529

>>15775986
The FC is simply in a different league, not like they were ever supposed to compete. The FC is more expensive though, and more expensive to maintain. The FC is just the better car and platform but the AW11 will give it a run for its money by fun per dollar.

Actual aw11 owner here. It's a blast, gets gud mileage and its reliable. Clutch and trans kinda don't last past 200k unless the previous owners treated it real well. I would buy fresh tires unless whoever you're buying them from has evidence that they're brand new. A lot of the snap oversteer shit is a symptom of bad tires. I've only experienced snap when I induced it intentionally. The only downside to the car is that /o/ spergs up all the aw11 threads because if something is popular and handles well, it must be bad. It's a fun commuter, not much else.

I had a really clean one with a JDM hi-comp redtop swap for a while. Fun as hell and pretty quick, but I eventually popped the motor (oil starvation in a sweeper, I think) and it's not really a car you can do a driveway motor swap in. Ended up selling the shell off after it sat next to my house for a couple of years.

Still gay as fuck and inferior to a proper turbo setup
>>

so you're saying a turbocharged AW11 will make the same amount of power even easier?
>>

that is a really valid argument my dude keep up the shitposting
>proper turbo setup
the fuck does that even mean? is less boost at higher revs somehow worse than more boost at all rev ranges?

4age can't really make much more than that anyway

sure, but that's all it needs to beat supra's, right?

Supercharger is dead weight and adds heat
The low end gained from it is irrevant because no one drives a 4age around below 4000rpm

My dad used to have one and he always gets excited and tells me about how it was like a modern car but in the 80s and how amazing it was. I honestly think is the reason he likes my MR2, it faintly reminds him of it but simpler.
>>

owned an aw11, s13 and mx5. mx5 and s13 are better cars overall imo
had a lot of character and people loved it, gets a lot of attention

My Dad owned one for a few years. They are pretty reliable and good commuters if you dont need to take more than 1 person somewhere.
Be careful about rust though. The chassis on his rotted out beyond repair.

I mean as long as your understand what you're getting yourself into, there's no issue and you'll have a great time.

People will argue
>No trunk space
>Not practical
>hurr dur hurr

Like you already know about the trunk space and practicality and should have already considered that.

They're 4cyl toyota. I mean it's very similar to a corolla, these cars often die around 225k, about 50k sooner on average than a corolla, just because it's sportier and gets thrashed more.

>>
>>15776947
FUCK yeah. That was my first car. I feel so stupid for selling it.
>>
>>15777774
Bought the shell and engine from the same guy for 1500 USD he had removed the engine, had it rebuilt by a local shop and never got back to the project. Car sat for 15 years and I found it on CL. After getting I pulled the head to check a small amount of rust in cylinder 4. It was due to rainwater getting in literally days before I got it so no big deal. Inside was spotless the guy told no lies.
Fast forward 3 months, engine is in, car is fun as fuck. Lives up to the name entirely. Got a borla muffler for 30 USD at the junkyard and with the stock resonator sounds perfect.
>>
>>15778747
Hey, I've seen your posts. I can't get anything now (no money ;-;) but in the future, im looking for an fd or fc. Do you have any general thoughts on the two? Anything I should keep in mind with rotaries? Anything I should know that I wouldn't know to ask? Thank you senpai one of the better trips
>>
>>15782188
thanks man.
What are you wanting out of the car and how much money are you willing to spend?
FC is obviously cheaper and less prone to breaking when stock.
FD would need some money dumped into it to be a reliable car on top of being usually 3x the cost of a good FC

Either way ALWAYS ask for a compression test and make sure the car starts easily hot and cold. Always wait for it to be FULLY warmed up and check the upper radiator hose for swelling (which would indicate a bad water seal)
Cant tell you how many Rx7's i've had with bad water seals. As well as how many engines i've bought that were said to be perfect, but when opened had cracked coolant jackets.

I can't tell if it just feels different due to the fact I was getting use to driving my Corolla or something is still wrong. I'm tempted to go on Craigslist and see if someone will trade for a v6 Camry. Hold me mr2 fags.
>>
>>15782219
Honestly I prefer FC so let's stick with that.

Any year in particular better than the rest? And if so should another come up, should I really not go for it or just deal?

Are apex seals a meme? Looking to send about 4k
>>
>>15782243
S4 86 and 87 are the easiest to trouble shoot and work on. 88 (still considered S4) was a middle year for converting to S5 and had some awkward differences. They arent a huge deal but are a bit more difficult for a novice.
S5 (89 to 91) got heavier and more complicated.
For S4 if you want LSD you need a GXL or GTU model
GTU wasnt untill 88 though.
So find a GXL if at all possible
the next best is a sport model as it still had 4 pot brakes up front and vented brakes in the rear (like the GXL and turbo) but didnt have LSD

So to recap
in my oppinion the 86 or 87 GXL is the best option.
second best is 86 or 87 sport model
Ultimate would be turbo however
>>
>>15782243
and apex seals are a meme
i've had many Rx7s go over 200k with good compression
My current FC is just under 200k now.
>>
>>15782281

>>15782412
Also just noticed it has an S5 front bumper.
This is a common swap but i would check for damage anyway. Also make sure its still using the stock brake cooling ducts. Some people remove them when they swap to S5 bumper.
>>
>>15782424
where would I check that? Sorry I'm not too familiar with rotaries. What would you price it at?

Are they reliable as dailies or should I not even consider trading my Miata kek
>>
>>15782457
When you look at the front bumper you see the two openings to the sides of the main air dam.
Those are for brake cooling ducts. It will be obvious if they are there or not.
I DD'd mine for 7 years. It wont get as good of mileage as the Miata. But it it more practical.
Only issue i ever had was a starter that went bad.
Now thats not saying you cant have a multitude of other issues. But i've also owned miatas that plagued me with issue too.
So its all up to how the previous person has maintained them and how fast you're willing to learn about what to keep an eye on.
Mine was my first car when i was 15 years old. So i beat the piss out of it and had no clue what damage i was doing. Then decided to learn after my grandfather yelled at me for not letting my car warm up one day. Its been my obsession ever since to learn as much as possible about Rx7s
Best car i've ever owned

'86 FC3S, N/A
Says it runs fine
pretty new HSD coilovers
K-sport Big Brake in the front
2 month old stainless exhaust
Recently got it's dutch version of MOT which will be valid for another 2 years.

Posted for 3800 Euro, can probably go down.

Would i be retarded to check this out?
>>
>>15782457
>What would you price it at
Sorry i'm multitasking
In my area something like that will go for $3000
If the paint and interior were in good shape it would be near $6000
>>
I saw a clean one with a rebuilt blacktop for 3500, so tempting
>>
>>15782486
Looks ok from the outside i guess.
If you do look at it, look at the back of the Diff and check for a tag hanging off the fill bolt. If it has a tag then it is LSD.
Check oil feed lines from OMP to the block as much as you can see.
Check OMP for leaks
Check oil cooler lines for leaks
Check heater core hose below oil filter for swelling from oil soak
Check for fuel leaks on the pulsation dampener
most other stuff will be obvious like a normal car.
>>
>>15782500
Thanks mate, I will cetainly check for those things if I end up looking at it.
>>
>>15782496
That's a good price for clean and a blacktop

4000 seems to be standard for clean and running up where I'm at.
