My ford ranger has developed a whine when I press the gas, that stops when the gas pedal is released. It gets louder at highway speeds.
Any ideas? I recently had the timing chain tensions replaced as preventive maintenance.
From the engine?
What engine?
Could be your serpentine belt, or something with the new tensioner is dry
Engine is 4.0 SOHC
The sound is from the engine bay.
If the tensioner was dry I'd expect timing chain rattle as it rubs against the cassette, not whine. I think.

video of the sound or is it hard to hear over road noise?

Shoot it'll be a couple hours until I'm off work but I'll make one.

>Engine is 4.0 SOHC
well that's unfortunate

Power steering pumps often make a distinctive whine that changes pitch with engine speed.

5.0 swap will make things better

Dude I was in the drive through and i heard a 4.0 SOHC ranger behind me and it sounded like a fucking electric whirring noise like what you described.
Shits fucked yo, 4.0 SOHC cant really hold a candle to the 3.0 or 4 pot for longevity.

When I had a 3.0 ranger it was damn reliable but man.... when I got in my 5.0 explorer modded with OBX exhaust headers wow... that ~330 ft/lbs was like heaven on earth compared to the 3.0.

this 2bh
ideally you want to find a 4.0 ohv as opposed to the sohc. to bad they only used them till 2000.

its top bad explorer aftermarket headers are so hard to find now a days. Stock headers on expo 5.0 are so trash.

Yup, they are. I noticed an immediate difference after I got the new headers installed. More torque down low for starters. jerks you back more than it used to. if you jab the throttle at a stand still you can fuck with people. the 3.73 gears help too.
