Anyone here own a 2004-2008 WRX STI? What's the reliability like? I own an IS300 right now and looking to trade up, and have found quite a few in my price range, but all have decently high mileage (100-150k miles). Ask an subie fanboy and you'll hear nothing but how they're the best and most reliable, but everyone I've known that owned a WRX has had numerous issues with their car, even with up to date maintenance. Is subaru reliability just a meme? I've owned a GTI before so I know what it's like to own a turbo car, special maintenance, and something that needs fixing once a month lol. Any input is appreciated, thanks.

Get an evo if you want reliability.

>What's the reliability like?
just trust me when I say don't buy a used wrx.
you are better off saving and financing a new one.
the problem isn't the reliability that is inherent to the brand or even to this particular model, it's who drove it before you.
the wrx lends itself to boy racer types who are going to drive the car hard, and you are going to be buying a car that has all of the wear from the previous owner, and a decade old car is also going to have some parts that need to be fixed just due to being old, not to mention the high mileage.
>tl;dr
>save up and finance a new one
sorry if it's not what you want to hear, but it's not going to be the same as buying a corolla which handle mileage better, and aren't driven as hard

Burnt valves and ringlands memes. Heat from the turbo melts inner CV boots. Wheel bearings memes.
Fun car to drive though.

No problem there, I expected to hear as much. I work with a subie fagboy who drives a 90s 2.2l impreza and talks about nothing but how great subaru is, who then came in to work a while ago pissed off because his head gasket blew lol. Thanks for the input, yeah I figured that's why the insurance was so high, and finding them so cheap is easy, is because of the teen "racers" who beat the shit out of their cars and change the oil every 20k miles.

I have no doubt it's fun, almost anything with a turbo can be a blast, but not when it's in the shop more than on the road

>mitsubishi
>reliability
>>15750453
>mistubishi
>not reliable
You can't just make up your own memes like that anon. It's poor form.
.>>15750453
>Mitsubishi
>worst issues I hear are blown transmissions/transfer cases from retards doing constant launches with twice the stock whp and the occasional bad AYC pump on Evo Xs
>Subarus
>literally everything breaks on stock or nearly-stock cars
>ringlands
>headgaskets
>turbos
>spun bearings
>wheel bearings
on that note I have no idea why subaru cant build a car with wheel bearings that last more than 40-60k miles, its like regular maintenance on them
>>15750394
in all seriousness they're okay if you find a fully stock or nearly stock one and never mod it
Evos are almost always better though.
>>15750453
also as a justification for a new car is the factory warranty, bassically you can consider that you wont be paying for repairs anytime soon, and it will also bring up the resale of your car a ton, which btw new/newish wrx's have great resale value (at least where I live)
Why would anyone get an STI over an evo?
>SHIT reliability on STIs
>evos are faster around the track
>evo AWD system is still better
>STI parts and mods cost wayyy more than evo parts/mods
>the evo can make more power with less money
>evos already have forged internals
>evos can make a bazillion HP
>STI kill themselves over 350hp
>if you dont want your subaru to blow up, you have to go to a subaru specialist shop, so they can rework and add forged everything, and then tune it to the point where you can't ever modify it yourself cause you'll fuck it up
>and even then it will blow up
Why
>>15750874
because the US never got any WRC-era EVO and neither brand is known for their reliability
>>15750882
This is about sti and evo anon.
>>15750882
>>15750888
no this is about whether OP should buy a crummy used high mileage wrx from his friends dealership for more than he should pay
>which he shouldn't
>>15750394
honestly, have a thorough inspection of the internals, yes it needs just as much as a GTI, I own a GTI now, replace the head-gaskets with aftermarket ones, get a COBB (meme tune), it'll give it a better map.
OP here, I'd love to have an EVO, pound for pound they're much better cars, but so damn rare here (Northern New England). The subies are cheaper and probably shittier, but there are communities up here that love em for some stupid reason. I can find STIs for "cheap" up here (meaning they probably need work or are about to shit the bed), while finding an EVO will cost at least $25k, no matter the condition or year, if you even see any. Just for the ability to find parts and the car itself, as well as others who own them for advice/experience, etc. The sti is almost more worth it.
I guess I am more open to ideas of cars in the $15k range that would be more valuable, if anyone has any recommendations. Pic of my car for attention

Either one you buy will be a dead car walking from rust unless they garaged it in the winter which no one ever does because the whole point of those cars is they can still be driven in the winter.
