A: I know next to nothing about cars.
B: I inherited a 97 Subaru Legacy a few months ago. Manual says it's a 97, google shows me nothing but outbacks, but it's a sedan.

I put a new battery in it and it ran for a while, but now it needs to be jumped every so often. I'm assuming it's the starter, but idk. Also, a deer took out the right mirror and dented said side so the door pinches. I can definitely fix the mirror; the cords and port are intact so as long as I can secure it well enough I can fix it. I'll maybe just bang out the dent for now.

Otherwise, pretty good condition considering it sat in my aunt's driveway for almost two years.

Are there any known points of interest that I need to keep an eye on or fix up asap (other than the dint, mirror, and starter)? I'm going to need it to last as long as possible as I am broke and it is free.

It probably is the starter
Also all Subaru's have head gasket issues. Check the head gaskets to see if they are leaking

will do

That's not the starter, that's the alternator. REALLY easy to replace. You can do it yourself. Just pick up the haynes manual for it at your local autozone and a starter craftsman ratchet set from sears. Literally 15 minutes. Part is maybe $100-140

sounds like you should get to fucking researching

or just continue to shitpost here in the hope that someone will spoonfeed you an answer

> probably is the starter
THIS IS THE LEVEL OF AUTOMOTIVE KNOWLEDGE ON /o/

if the starter was bad a battery jump wouldnt help

headgaskets dont kill batteries either
>>
>>15667278
and if you don't want to pick up the book, there are numerous how to videos on youtube that show you how to do it.
>>
>>15667286
I don't think he meant to imply the gaskets were related.

>>15667278
>>15667287
I'll probably do both. Now that I actually own a car I want to become more knowledgeable.

If you've got any more recommendable sites/channels for general automotive self-education I'm all ears.

Additionally I'm constantly second-guessing anything I look up online because they all depict hatchbacks.

The most popular variant of the Legacy was always the wagon. Sedans are actually a minority. Personally, I thing the wagons are better looking than the sedans. They sold because they were cheap and fuel efficient alternatives to the SUV craze of the 90s and early 00s

Outbacks are Legacy wagons with a raised suspension, raised roofline, and this body kit. It was mean to deal with the SUV craze since Subaru couldn't afford to design a new SUV

neat

So, again, rookie question, but they will then be largely the same mechanically right? Is it largely just a different body with raised suspension?

It's the same exact car mechanically. Just the body from the rear doors back is different. Even the suspension is interchangeable. Here's a lowered Outback.

And here's an Legacy Wagon (note the lack of the raised roof) made into a race car.

My mistake. There's the raised roof. It started life as an outback. Still a racecar though.
