they're maintained but expressways are so fucking expensive.

It's 105 dollars to take the tomei expressway from Tokyo to Kyoto. You can take other routes but they're not as fast

By comparison,a Shinkansen ticket is 142 dollars, and it gets you there in relative speed, and comfort. Granted you don't have your car, but you really don't need one in Kyoto.

Along with paying some hefty taxes for a car that is >5 years old, you're basically throwing money into the burn pile.
