Truck general? Didn't see another one, so truck general.

I'm looking for the guy in or around DFW who also saw this Bronco, that I bought, on Craigslist and offered me bumpers for sale in another thread.

If I don't end up getting another 2500hd Chevy or GMC, I'm looking at possibly getting a 2016 GMC Canyon with the 2.8L Duramax diesel or a recent Toyota Tacoma with the 3.5L and manual transmission. What are y'alls thoughts on these options?

The Duramax is a solid bet. For those interested, it's based on the old VM Motori unit that used to be fitted to the Jeeps (still fitted to the Wrangler in some markets).

>>

Yea, the Duramax Canyon really caught my eye. Seems great for city driving and I could still do some towing with it. In that case, I would still have my old 2500hd to tow the real heavy shit.

>>15573870
Are you talking about the 1500 Dodge with the Ecodiesel?
>>
>>15573893

This is /o/. Everything is baseless assumption.
>>
>>15573893
Just google EcoDiesel problems. They are far from reliable, which is a shame because a 1/2 with a stick is exactly what I want. I don't care much for the over regulated diesels were stuck with though.
>>
>>15573901
Yes the 1500

>>15573903
They can have problems, but all engines can. It seems like a lot have made it to 50k with no problems. btw I checked and I dont think you can get an ecodiesel with a manual transmission.
>>
>>15573933
I thought you could get a stick with the ecodiesel, but your right, it doesn't look like it.
>>
>>15573933
Not sure I want a 1500. Haven't completely ruled one out, but I was more considering going for either another big truck (2500hd) or go for a small one (Canyon or Tacoma).

If you want big and stick shift the ram 2500 has that but only with 6.7 diesel

OVERLOADED CRV.jpg
3MB, 3264x1836px
What's a cheap truck around Canada that i can replace my CRV for hauling?

Requirments:
4x4 and at least a V6 or a I4 as powerful as a V8.

It was also towing 40 behind it, i can hear my car scream. I mean not actually, it was all good and easy, for all 3 trips.

I wanna be able to carry a couple hundred of these bales in my bed, but towing isn't too bad. I'm just not very good at it.

Markham to Toronto. BTW gas is not an issue, this is the partially free world.

They're sought after by jeep collectors, especially XJ enthusiasts, and command a $1-2k premium over them for any given condition. I've seen restored/highly preserved examples going for $4-6k with built offroaders going anywhere between $3.5 and $8k.

They're fun.
>>
>>15575383
Commanche like that (assuming it's a 4.0 and 4x4) would probably go for 3500-4500. If it were in perfect 10/10 unmolested shape it would bring 10k+.

They're pretty rare.

He's got about 10 trucks to pull parts off of in his back yard, some of them are pretty picked over, but he gets new ones on occasion. I know for sure he has a 78-79 front bumper though.

It's a 2wd auto unfortunately but I've got a 4wd conversion planned for it eventually. Won't be super duper expensive to throw the parts in considering they come cut and wired for it in the first place. Payed $1,400 for it.

I've bought 2 broncos in the past.

First one was virtually 100% original- zero rust and factory undercoating on the frame and belly still.
Ran like shit but it felt like something simple.
Took it home and changed plugs, one was broken (300 I6 so it kinda needed that plug).
Kind of hard to find those deals nowadays though.

My 78 is pretty clean for its age. It's missing the carpet and a few other interior pieces but most of it is there and it's completely rust free aside from the very back edge of the left rear quarter panel. Rust is a little excessive there but other than that it's solid. I just need to fix some leaks on the differentials and completely redo the brakes and it will be a solid reliable truck. Everything else is just little stuff.

So I was about to buy a B2600 2WD to make a 4G63t street/strip drag truck out of, but now I've got a line on a 4x4 for cheaper. Do I buy the 4x4 and launch in 4WD? Or launch in 2WD? Or convert it to 2WD? Or just buy the 2WD truck I was looking at for a couple hundred more?
>>

Will the 4x4 drivetrain handle the abuse? I'd probably just go with 2WD, convert the rear to a 4 bar for drag racing, and stick in something like a Ford 8.8".

Dunno, I hear a lot of people saying never to use 4WD on hard surfaces, but also a lot of people saying they drag race in 4WD all the time. How do you like muh truck, /o/? I just picked it up a couple of weeks ago. It's an F-350 dually converted to 4x4 with a 400 small block in it. The flatbed is going to a friend, and then I'll be swapping on a crew cab and building a shorter flatbed for it with provisions for a fifth wheel hitch. Also, apparently it's possible to get 400+ BHP out of the 400 for just a couple grand. I'm pretty good friends with my machinist, so I can get all the machine work done on it for lunch money.

So in the end I'll have a 400hp 4x4 dually that seats 6 with a 6 foot flatbed with fifth wheel, underslung boxes, and optional fence, and a 50+ gallon fuel capacity. Is there any functionality I'm overlooking? It's only going to see maybe 1000-2000 miles per year so I'm not really worried about day-to-day practicality, just "I really wish I had a vehicle that could do that" scenarios.

>>

>>
>>15578308

https://www.gearvendors.com
>>
>>15578106

Much better ride quality than leaf springs. But less towing and payload capacity. GM eventually did away with it because sales became all about touting stats like towing capacity.
>>
>>15578308
Are you talking shit about C6's son?
>>
>>15578417
you bet i am

the C6 is, by all published data, the power robbing king of all autos. i don't think it eats power on a percentage basis but the drain is high as BC states. i think the data was collected before low drag modifications came about. this is the installing of torrington bearings where the thrust washers are. there are billet aluminum drums to lighten the mass, or you can drill the drums to vent fluid and try to lighten up.
>>
>>15578406
But that's like 5 grand, right? I've got racecars to spend money on.
>>
>>15578125

torque at rear axles = engine lb-ft x 1st gear ratio x rear gear ratio x 0.90 (underestimated drivetrain loss)

225 lb-ft x 3.72 1st gear ratio x 4.56 rear gear ratio = 3,435 lb-ft

A factory 28 spline axle will handle about 4,000 lb-ft fine and axles are rated individually so the 4,000 rating is a 200% safety margin assuming you put 100% torque to a single axle hooking up on a very hard launch you should be okay, at least in terms of axle strength. Aftermarket 28 spline axles are made stronger as well. For a racecar you typically want to run as small an axle as you can based on the above equation because otherwise your throwing away power. In an off road rig obviously that's less of a concern because you want more reliability usually.

It's just a picture of a girl and my truck. If it makes you feel better I totally didn't get any "benefits" this weekend.

Replace AC compressor?

What truck, cuck?
>>
>>15578208
Figure this is probably bait, but I don't think 3/4 ton and up should be offroaded. Not saying they can't, but you buy those kinds of trucks for towing and carrying heavy loads. Rangers and Tacomas and that size of pickup are good more for the offroad stuff, but really I'd buy something like an FJ or a 4runner or a Jeep. Just my opinion.

'89 Bronco, 5.0. I'd like to avoiding replacing the entire compressor because, to the best of my knowledge, it was working fine until the bearing in the pulley gave out. I don't want to replace compressor and accumulator and hoses and discharge freon and pull vacuum and charge freon. Even doing it myself, it'd cost more than it's worth. Doing just the new pulley/clutch assembly is only about $100, though. So I'm going that route. If it winds up being the compressor is shot, I at least have a working pullley and bearing whereas before the bearing had seized entirely, preventing the fucker from starting.

There's still the issue of the money I'd need to spend on a new compressor, accumulator, and hoses though. I'm short on cash after moving and other bullshit, and I merely need to get it on the road as quickly and cheaply as possible. That's basically the plan for later, though. If it turns out the compressor is shot.

why hoses?

I meant for >>15578501 to go to >>15578133 who said >only 28 spline though

It's a bit different in the off road world where you put heavy tires and wheels with large diameter tires that stress the axles more. But I see so many people with race cars or even street cars who say something like just put a 33 spline 9" in it. I guess if you want massive overkill at the cost of great parasitic loss then go for it. Put sizing the axle as small and light as possible will give you an edge. I've never been a huge 9" fan because the only real benefit besides being tough as hell is the drop out member for somewhat quick gear changes. However, it's still pretty slow. If your're that serious about racing just go quick change. Save a ton of weight and parasitic loss, and a gear change is legit a 20 min or less deal. Since I don't really care about the drop out member for budget builds I typically go Ford 8.8".

I run with some guys that use full floating Ford 8.8" rears with the big Ford floating axle ends. 28 spines is fine for their road racing stuff on slicks with moderate torque because shock loads are what really hurt those rears so no drag launches and they hold up well.

An aftermarket 31 spine Ford 8.8" axle in a drag car will take 7,000 lb-ft no problem. With a 2.20 1st gear and 4.11 rear gear that would mean it would take up to 850 lb-ft with a good safety margin. That's way more than the rest of the rear would ever hold (safe to ~600 lb-ft with a proper braced or aftermarket housing) so breaking an axle isn't a huge risk.

Engine's out of my 97 f150. How much work would it be swapping from a 4.2 to a 4.6? I'd be doing it mainly for the aftermarket and for dat V8

Assuming you want to reuse your existing transmission, you'll need an early casting 4.6 F1AE and F2VE block 4.6 because they had the same bellhousing bolt patterns as small block Fords and your 4.2. You'll need to come up with engine mounts. And then if you'll need to splice the 4.6 engine harness and ECU into the 4.2 chassis harness (you'll honestly either need a very good schematic, a professional, or some plug-and-play kit here). If you swap in a newer 4.6 you'll need to get it with a transmission or find 1 to fit. Then you'll probably need a new transmission crossmember and driveshaft. Not to mention if it's an electronically controlled transmission you'll need to adapt an ECU and or splice it into the existing chassis harness. All in all, probably a huge waste of time for some shitty old F150. Either just buy a V8 F150 or git gud.

Gotta good angle of the truck for the truck thread.
>>

Yeah I guess you're right. Guess I'll stick with rebuilding this engine. Doing it mostly for the experience of rebuilding an engine and not so much practicality. The truck only cost me 500 so I figured It'd be a nice vehicle to learn some stuff on without worrying about breaking anything.
>>
>>15581784
I have a 4.6 out of a Grand Marquis and a transmission. 96k on both.
>>
>>15582388
There's nothing you can do wrong to a $500 car. Even if you completely fuck it to uselessness, reassemble it and you can get at least $500 for it in scrap or parts. My roommates are about to pool $500-600 to find an old tercel to fix and learn manuel on or something similar.
>>
>>15582388

Easiest swap would be to stick in an old school SBF with a carb. You could do that no problem and it would bolt up to the existing trans for cheap with minimal electronics.
>>
>>15582342
Those 4 litres run for fucking ever. Just keep it full of oil and don't overheat it, and they have no end of life mileage.
>>
>>15582405
This truck was actually running great when I first got it, after I pieced it back together from a wreck. Little engine work had to be done when I first got it. Unfortunately the intake manifold gasket went and the engine started hydrolocking, which is a common problem I hear on these motors. Tons of coolant in the oil too. Figured now's a good time to try and rebuild since I gotta replace a connecting rod anyways from the hydrolocking
>>
>>15581329
Mostly because I've got a small leak in one, and the truck is 27 years old. If I'm already going the "replace the compressor and accumulator" route, I'm going to spend the extra $50 or so to replace the hoses. It's mostly just that I don't want to go that route if I can avoid it. For now, at least.
