Tempted to get a PreSmog car.

How are these for DDs?

Good thing here is that there is no coolant to steam clean your cylinders.

Carry a spray bottle of water around to mist your engine fan with on hot days.

You won't keep highway speed either.

Aircooled engines rarely overheat but they run so fucking hot that you're wearing your seals out fast.
However Vws have had problems with cylinder 3(?) i think overheating.

Also have fun with vapor lock.

You'd have a better chance of winning the lotto than trying to adjust those 4 drum brakes to not slightly pull one way or another. They are pretty sick though. Not to DD though. Get an old 5 speed mini truck like an S10, Ranger or something similar.

>Beetle
>cheap
lol
Maybe if you want a rusted to shit late model. Hippy tax has made decent Beetles more expensive than better cars, and pretty much only nostalgic boomers and the people raised by them to think it's cool.

They are also awful to drive. They don't accelerate, they don't corner, and they don't stop. They have no air conditioning, and no safety features. Basically the only good thing about them is that they're lightweight and simple. Beetles are one of those old cars that is shit because it doesn't have enough old car goodness to make up for the lack of new car goodness.

Beetle's old car goodness:
>lightweight
>extremely simple
>easy to work on

That's just not enough to make up for the shitbox badness:
>awful brakes
>awful handling
>awful acceleration
>awful comfort
>awful safety
>awful practicality

Sure, you can heavily modify it and make it perform decently, but you can also buy a better car for a similar price and have a superior starting point.

You can buy running Beetles for only $1500. They're by far the cheapest classic.

Everything from the 60's was awful to drive compared to modern cars.

applies to what you just said. A running $1500 beetle will be a later model and it will be rusted to shit.

>Everything from the 60's was awful to drive compared to modern cars.
Wrong. Plenty of 60s and 70s cars are way better to drive than a Beetle, and you're not going to get a driveable 60s beetle for $1500 anyway, the old ones are the most valuable. Beetles stuck around for a long time and never got much better. An '80s beetle is just as shit to drive as a '60s beetle, even if it can manage to do the speed limit and handles marginally better. You have to heavily modify any beetle to make it anywhere near good unless you enjoy putting around at 55mph in the searing heat and taking a minute to get there.

>For $2000 maybe but those cars would need to be smogged. OP is in California.
OP didn't say his budget was $2,000, why are you implying that he did?

Learn to read, retard:
>Everything from the 60's was awful to drive compared to MODERN cars.
Other 60's cars may be better to drive than a Beetle but they're far more expensive for a decent example. But what I said was that all cars from the 60's are worse to drive than modern cars.

And $2000 is the minimum for a shitty AW11 or something which performs way better than a Beetle but needs to be smogged and has limited potential unless you put in so much work that you may as well have bought the Beetle. Presmog is a huge advantage if you want to modify your car in CA.

cylinder overheats due to the design of the cooling shroud with the oil cooler. Cylinder three is also inherently weaker due to a indent on the front side of the case. Making sure your shroud is clean of shit and your carb is properly adjusted will save your cylinder.

If you REALLY want a bug get a latin american bug, those were made till 2003 and are reliable cheap cars

40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s bugs are not reliable
90s and 2000s are

How are they as DDs? shit
gutless engine, they can move the bug up to decent speed and in decent time, but they are no fun and have no power in the high range
body work on them is expensive as fuck as there is not a single straight panel in it, its all curved
1000cc is shit, so is anything that is not 1700cc

If you are importing a bug like you should, get them from argentina or brazil if you are getting one made in the 90s, 2000 to 2003, mexico

Make some vents in the front and put the radiator there, best way to do a watercooled old VW

This is just shit. Enjoy a shit system of vacuum and pointless safety equipment.

Get a proper 60's bug. buy or convert to 12. run a 1600. every panel can be bought. there are re pops of everything and a cheap price.

I've done it, and ran the rad in the front. cut the bottom of the apron out and that hole for air flow as well as front vents

>Vacum
>safety
they were built in LA exactly like earlier bugs everywhere else till early 2000s because no safety or need to improve laws/market existed in latin america
a 2003 mexican bug has the same mechanics as a 1950s german bug
The most you get in safety is 3 point seat belts and thats it
The only thing that is different from a 60s bug is that the interior has a more "modern" look, though you can just rip it all off and install the 60s parts if you wish
You get a cheap 90s car that looks exactly like a 60s car, has the same mechanics, but its not as trashed
