My friend bought an 87 for that same amount, talked him down to $800 cause it had rod knock. He put in a junk yard motor in it for $250, and then traded it for a AWD Laser + $800 in cash with a blown engine that he once again swapped in a junkyard motor, and again traded it for a 2003 Xterra.


Even with rodknock, he drove it over 1k miles.

I bought a 1993 Celica with a blown engine changed it with another 5SFE then a month later the threads of the oil filter came off and all the bearings got loose and it knocked like a bitch. When you started it up it took over 10 full Mississippis for the oil light to go off. It burned so much oil we installed a second cat to make it pass emissions. What a piece of shit but at least it was well assembled
