I've given up on a few jobs now because I didn't have the tools to do it properly but the longer I work on my cars the more i realize that buying your own tools will have greater benefits in the long term if you plan to continue to work on cars.

How do you accumulate your tools? Do you buy them from a store or second hand? any recommendations for the best brand tools for working on vehicles or the essential tools to purchase? Anyone got a good recommendation on a electric impact wrench?

buy them then keep them
>>
Milwaukee makes one that's nearly fucking indestructible, just don't throw it around like a cheap harbor freight impact.

Get yourself a torque wrench, socket set, impact, electric ratchet, some drain pans, a lift and you're almost in business.

I work at a dealership I buy stuff from harbor freight craftsman husky matco mac tools and snap on.

The best tool brands are snap on Matco and mac tools
>>
Snap-On may be expensive but has good warranty
I'd go for their torque wrenches and you can leave it at that as far as snap-on goes if you're saving shekels

>fucking 500$ to 1100$ torque wrenches
I don't make enough to afford those lol

I'll look into the milwaukee gear, seen some here at c-tire that was a decent price.

Home Depot sells alot of there shit too even tool boxes

I've had good luck at garage and estate sales.
>>
for an impact look into Milwaukee or Dewalt. not sure what Dewalt has these days but Milwaukee does have one with 600ft-lbs which would more then handle most jobs

also make sure you buy some impact sockets. don't be one of those fucks using regular sockets then losing an eye or some shit when they shatter

Home Depot is actually great for some cheap shit too. found a nice set of Husky ratcheting wrenches for $50 that i've had for a year now with zero issues.

If you live near a flea market, get used tools from there. I got a 1/2 inch flex head ratchet for 3$ the other day. If you buy something with moving parts be sure to take it apart and clean and grease them. There's no telling if the PO ever did.

I work at a garage where it's just me and my boss and these are the only two brands (except for spanners which are gearwrenches) he uses. SnapOn is a little better because our Tool Salesman is a really cool and funny guy to talk to.

>How do you accumulate your tools?
I set out on a job, find I need something, then go buy it or order it off Amazon.

>Do you buy them from a store or second hand?
Store, unless I can get them really cheap or free. When my grandfather died, my grandmother let me pick out a bunch of his old hand tools. So now I have half a ton of carpentry tools sitting in an old ammo box on the living room floor that I can't move because it's too heavy.

> essential tools to purchase?
Socket wrench. Screwdriver set that has hex/torx heads, or just a universal screwdriver. Wheel brace that isn't tiny, non-emergency jack, set of ramps, axle stands, drain pan that isn't shit, and a shitton of variously-sized funnels.
