I need to buy a car soon. It needs to be for daily use and not too expensive. However, I love older cars aesthetically.

Now I REALLY want to own a Jaguar XJ6 (series) some day, but apparently, they aren't that expensive, about ~3000-6000 euros, some in decent condition. However, since these are at least 20-30y old, they are not very efficient in terms of gas and I guess more prone to break down.

Would it be viable to buy a Jaguar XJ6 for daily use, or should I really look at more "younger" cars? Any personal experiences?

With Jaguars it doesn't matter whether you buy an old one or a newer one, they're all unreliable. The best compromise between classic looks and good reliability and running costs is the W124 code Mercedes, or in other words the 1986 to 1996 E-Class. Just make sure to thoroughly check for rust, otherwise they're basically bulletproof.

Alternatively if you're willing to accept slightly lower power and higher fuel consumption in exchange for more vintage looks you can go one generation backwards to the 1976 to 1985 E-Class or W123.

If its your only car, dont buy a 30 yr old for that money. Buy a newer toyota or some shit.

Definitely appeals more to me

You can put round headlights on it for an extra bit of vintage flavor. In Europe these were standard on sedans and wagons with four cylinder engines from the first half of the generation so they're a bit rarer, in the US all W123s have similar round headlights by default because of outdated sealed beams laws.

Still, do you think this would be reliable enough for daily use or are older cars for hobbyist use only?

Plenty of people daily drive W123s, I'll buy one this summer for daily driving. Of course older cars will demand more effort to keep them in good condition, but on the baseline they will run forever.

Ex-W123 300D owner here. The thing was a rotten piece of shit, fucking everything was broken or in the process of breaking down. Still, it always turned over on the first try even in the middle of Finnish winter and always got me to work and back.
It's a gutless piece of shit with absolutely no chance of pvertaking anything, but it always got me from point A to point B, escorted by the glorious smell of diesel and diesel pump rattle.

I'd like to work a bit on it as well, so it's actually good it requires some work. I'm gonna keep my eyes ope for the W123 but maybe still look at some Jaguars as well.

Thanks for the info senpai

old cars tend to break down a lot more than new
don't assume it will be any worse or better just because of a brand name

The older XJ6 are decently reliable. The thing that kills them is rust on the underside. They rust even in warmer climates.

The interior will eat leather creme and wood polish for breakfast so have a good stock of that.

Also the electronics for the wipers and windows aren't the best I think its because of corrosion. And things like power steering can fail quickly if you lock the wheel to one side for more than five seconds. And you will have to retune the carbs a lot.

If you get one that has not rusted from the underside so far its likely not going to start now. Test all the electrics to see if they work.
They're not as unreliable as they are made out to be.

But older Mercedes suffer none of these problems. They are very easy to work on too.
I think the w126 or w110 is in your budget aswell.

Just be warned that Diesels are like airplanes. They need a long runway to get to speed, but they do go fast.

Do NOT buy a Jaguar unless your a loaded wife swapper.

Well electronics and stuff I can replace/fix myself. I guess I just have to find a decent one without rust and take some preventive measures

>>15160241
Any reasons why not to?
