Genuinely better than the 996 he had, but that's not to say the 996.2 is a bad car. It's just that Porsche paid attention and solved a lot of little issues between those generation.

Best advice I've been given about sports cars is to buy the absolute best you can afford, so instead of the 997.2 carrera he looked at he opted for the 997.1 S with sport exhaust and Chrono package.

Exactly. Most people who do the work themselves (aside from the cage) spend around $25k. A winning, log booked spec 944 is at worst $12-$15k to buy turnkey, or $8-$10k to build. So I'll be busy racing that while I save for a 911.

Nice. I was looking at 997.2 S 6MT with SPASM, Sport Chrono, Exhaust, Carrera S wheels, Full Leather, and a few other options, but then I bought a house.

A few months into owning the house I couldn't find a similarly optioned example anywhere, found pic related and was able to get a very reasonable deal on it. Couldn't afford the 991.1 S, they're all $20k over budget and the prices are moving glacially slow.

In a few years I'll probably start looking for a blue 991.1 Targa GTS to replace it provided their prices come down just a bit.

How hard is it to replace the clutch on a 944? never done such a thing to a transaxle. How long/ what tools does a semi-competent guy like me need?

Book hours are 16, I would expect to spend a lot of that if its your first time. It's not complicated there's just a lot to do.

Disconnect the transmission in the back and remove, then disconnect torque tube from the bell housing and slide back enough to get the bell housing off to do the clutch. Of course this is one of those "while you're in there" things so check out your torque tube and cv's etc.

Not sure if a 944 is similar to a 928. But with a 928, there is no need to move the transmission or torque tube. There is a coupling in the torque tube shaft just behind the bell housing that can be slipped back to clear the clutch. The bottom half of the bell housing can be removed and this gives sufficient clearance to unbolt the pressure plate and remove it and the discs. The flywheel can also be removed. It takes me about 4 or 5 hours lying under my car in the garage, cursing.

Yes. Check for that splined coupling just behind the bell housing. And if the bell housing has an access cover on the bottom.

I've never worked on a 944. But they were designed (actually the 924 platform) at the same time as the 928. The 928 clutch is easy to remove. I had to pull mine when it ate the throwout bearing and the release lever pivot ball.

If you're asking you probably can't pull it off
You'll need a custom bell housing, custom wiring, and you'll need to do your own fab work to mount the engine

Take a look at Tom's Turbo Garage videos on the LS3 powered Miata build to get an idea of how much work you really have to do

For some reason the four seat fact bothers me. It's a four door sedan but technically it can hold the same amount of people like the first Porsche models. Yes, I'm aware of the comfort factor. I own a hatch coupe and it seems to be more practical than the practical version of Porsche. I just bought a 83' 944 for $1,000. It's not running at the moment and I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with it. I'm not much of a mechanic but my friends are and I'm very willing to learn.

The interior isnt the best but I don't really mind, I figure I can get the seats redone or just get covers. The exterior has very little rust and the engine doesn't have much rust at all either.

get ready to do a water pump and timing belt/balance belt change unless you have proof of it being done within the last 4 years/30k miles.

buy a cheap DME Relay right now and swap that out with the one in the car. under the dash. it's a pain in the ass to reach.

Continuous Injection System

Basically the intake moves the big metal plate which mechanically controls how much fuel is being pumped into the engine. The injectors aren't times with the engine at all and are always injecting fuel
It's pretty ghetto and kills performance since the only electrical component is the fuel pump. You can convert your car to electronic fuel injection for more power and better fuel economy

Everything is metric and yea I'd just add stuff as you need it. The only Porsche specific tools I have are for the suspension.

I'm doing this on a 924 Turbo which has CIS, I'm starting with the ignition but next will be EFI, all running on a megasquirt. If you do all the work, I'd say budget at least $1000. Once I'm done I think I might be close to $2000 Canadian with a full ignition/EFI conversion. You can save money at places using parts salvaged from the junkyard or can chose to buy new/custom built.

So ive never driven a porsche before, and I would like to bring pride to our glorious capitol of Stuttgart by riding a 944 into battle. The problem is, I drive a Miata. It's a delightful car, but it's just dreadfully fucking slow. I don't want to spend money modifying it when I could potentially just get a better car... Should I do it guys?? As one who's driven (not owned, but driven), a Cockster, a 944, a NB (both tarbu and stock, plus suspension; this is what I do own), a 300 HP NA, a 968, and a 928, the 944/968 feel heavier, a tad more solid, and "slower" because of the higher mass/larger footprint. However, I fucking loved driving every one of them, and the 924/944/968 with the 2.7 or 3.0 will be just fine. Plus, dat sweet, sweet hatch (which will squeak dreadfully unless it's adjusted properly/has a good seal).

So this guy>>15183461 is fairly accurate, it is a momentum car like a Miata (read: slow acceleration) but it is impeccably balanced and handles like an absolute dream. Plus unlike a Miata you get that coupe feel which some people prefer.

If you want a genuinely fast car with all the above qualities, by a 951, but your budget will be nearly double that of the n/a.

Also, Unless you do the work yourself, OR you don't mind paying premium shop hours then I would avoid them altogether. The major expenses on a 944 are not really the parts prices (save for very few unicorn-ish parts) but paying labor for a shop that knows how to work on 944s and has the car specific tools to do so will add up very quickly.

Truth. And to add to your comment to my comment, there are a few 924/944/968-specific tools that will be of use if you decide to wrench on it yourself. If you live in an area that has a fairly active Porsche club (or at least one that deigns to include the untermenschwagens), there's likely someone who has all of these and others I've missed:
*Flywheel locking tool (super nifty and convenient for keeping at TDC)
*Timing belt tensioner tool (sensitive instrument; handle with care)
*Oil cooler testing tool
*"cheesehead" bits
Also recommended to have when you do the timing belt and water pump service is to change all the front seals in addition to the water pump studs. On one 944 a friend and I were trying to resurrect, we snapped 3 or 4 of them even after generous (over several weeks) applications of penetrating oil, mild shock (hammer, not electricity), and heat. Also broke an extractor off in the block trying to extract one of those studs. Drilling tool steel is an absolute bitch, so be careful. If worst come to worse, just drill the bitch out and Helicoil it. It's not usually a problem, just something to be aware of, like with any other vehicle on the face of the planet.

Once you get the hang of working on them, they're really not that bad. In most cases, you have plenty of places to put your hands and tools. If you don't, try a different angle... My aforementioned buddy and I needed to tighten the crank bolt. We tried from the top-down, failing miserably. From the bottom-up, we had all the room in the world.

I do still want one of these things, but I've recently gotten into motos, need to tear my Miata apart, spend $2k on a good riding mower, etc.

That belt tension tool is great, I also have the rear toe eccentric tool and after doing my rear wheel bearings I would highly recommend the arnworx bearing tool. Expensive as fuck but worth it. I ended up having to remove the trailing arms and take them to a shop :/

yeah exactly. same concept as using a compressor but you can put fluid in the tank and bleed the brakes by yourself without worrying about the reservoir going dry.

So, my father is the average middle aged business executive who only owns a hatchback and has been thinking about uprading to a 30k-40k vehicle until the end of this year. He's all into plebian run of the mill family sedans, like Bimers and Benzies, and I want to convince him that getting a second hand cabrio 996 is the superior patrician choice.

Could he DD it with enough practicality, assuming he still keeps his hatchback as a backup? Furthermore, dad is also a bit of a big guy (le 4u bane meem XD), not morbidly obese but definitely on the plus size, would it be too small of a ride for him? Finally, I like to go alongside him and his brother on roadtrips during vacations, how would it be to travel on long trips in the rear seats of those things?

The buckets are tight; I'm 5'9" (lelmanlet etc.), 165lbs and they fit me snugly. It's also a fairly low seating position.

These are for short people and children only. Seriously. It's a 2+2, not a four-seater.

The 996 is a solid DD mechanically, and there are plenty of good examples that've had the IMS dealt with, among other things. There are a few problem areas like the coating flaking off the switches if abused and some of the audio units are flaky, but it's a good machine nevertheless. However, if he is portly and you wish to tour with him and your brother, the better P-car would be a Panamera. I hate SUVs with a passion, but the 2nd and 3d gen Cayennes are surprisingly good and (at least from the passenger seat of by buddy's) is like a bearmode sportscar. Think Gronkowski but with the ability to Ironman and set very good 100m hurdles times.

Source: I have a good friend who has a 996 C4S, a 2012 (or so, I'm not certain) Cayenne Diesel, and a 1993 968.

Tempted, but the project with it right now is changing the timing belt, water pump, various external engine seals, cleaning, and getting the turbo-related oil fittings to seal properly this time. I'm a nub and didn't quite get everything correct. It doesn't spew oil by any means, just seeps and makes things nasty underhood. Also need to find out exactly why my cruise control is sticking with a slight accel.
