Welcome to /POG/, the place to ask questions or shitpost about past, current, or future P-car purchases or work. Or post pictures, you know, whatever.

"What used Porsche can I afford?"
(Prices reflect 100% sorted cars)

>Air Cooled 911?
$30k+ 964
$50k+ 993

>Water Cooled 911?
$20k+ 996
$30+ 996
$60k+ 991

Based 944
>$5000 N/A
>$10,000 Tarbo
*Disclaimer: You can buy a 944 for under a grand, but the overwhelming consensus in the community is that sorted cars cost ~$5k... so if you buy that car for under a grand when you're done it'll be around or over $5k. YMMV.

>928/968
>$7k - $8k

If you are a regular poster who's car is not included in the OP drop a photo in the thread and remind me to add it to the photo.

You're right, the one for poorfags, but only because it's a track car build. I looked at spec 986 but 2$$4me to prep and race competitively
>>
>>15130312
997.1 S with the 3.8 and 6 speed manual.

Genuinely better than the 996 he had, but that's not to say the 996.2 is a bad car. It's just that Porsche paid attention and solved a lot of little issues between those generation.

Best advice I've been given about sports cars is to buy the absolute best you can afford, so instead of the 997.2 carrera he looked at he opted for the 997.1 S with sport exhaust and Chrono package.
>>
>>15130633
Yeah those spec racing costs scare me even though my car is eligible
>accusump and deep sump kits are $1500+
>Bilstein suspension overhaul is $3000
>custom fibreglass hardtops match suspension costs

I've seen spec conversions quoted at like $30k when you provide a donor car
>>
>>15130676
Exactly. Most people who do the work themselves (aside from the cage) spend around $25k. A winning, log booked spec 944 is at worst $12-$15k to buy turnkey, or $8-$10k to build. So I'll be busy racing that while I save for a 911.

Porsche loves those triple square bits. I bet your cv's use the same style. I've seen them on 944s and 911s as well.

Nice. I was looking at 997.2 S 6MT with SPASM, Sport Chrono, Exhaust, Carrera S wheels, Full Leather, and a few other options, but then I bought a house.

A few months into owning the house I couldn't find a similarly optioned example anywhere, found pic related and was able to get a very reasonable deal on it. Couldn't afford the 991.1 S, they're all $20k over budget and the prices are moving glacially slow.

In a few years I'll probably start looking for a blue 991.1 Targa GTS to replace it provided their prices come down just a bit.

How hard is it to replace the clutch on a 944? never done such a thing to a transaxle. How long/ what tools does a semi-competent guy like me need?
>>
>>15142685
Book hours are 16, I would expect to spend a lot of that if its your first time. It's not complicated there's just a lot to do.

Disconnect the transmission in the back and remove, then disconnect torque tube from the bell housing and slide back enough to get the bell housing off to do the clutch. Of course this is one of those "while you're in there" things so check out your torque tube and cv's etc.

Have a look at clarkes garage for a step by step
>>
One day...
>>
>>15142265
Yup, that's a dent

At $5k that's starting to approach Boxster prices
>>
>>15142265
The paint looks damaged. My car had a small dent but the paint was ok so the repair was cheap and it didn't needed any paint job.
>>
>>15142978
Not sure if a 944 is similar to a 928. But with a 928, there is no need to move the transmission or torque tube. There is a coupling in the torque tube shaft just behind the bell housing that can be slipped back to clear the clutch. The bottom half of the bell housing can be removed and this gives sufficient clearance to unbolt the pressure plate and remove it and the discs. The flywheel can also be removed. It takes me about 4 or 5 hours lying under my car in the garage, cursing.
>>
>>15144198
Interesting, when I did it I just pulled the trans because everyone says you have to in order to get the TT out of the way.

928's also have the rear mounted trans right?

I would expect less space on those so I guess it's worth a shot.
>>
>>15144287
>928's also have the rear mounted trans right?

Yes. Check for that splined coupling just behind the bell housing. And if the bell housing has an access cover on the bottom.

I've never worked on a 944. But they were designed (actually the 924 platform) at the same time as the 928. The 928 clutch is easy to remove. I had to pull mine when it ate the throwout bearing and the release lever pivot ball.

>>
Alright
How much would it be to buy a 944 and throw in an engine I can rely on like a 4age
>>
>>15145279
If you're asking you probably can't pull it off
You'll need a custom bell housing, custom wiring, and you'll need to do your own fab work to mount the engine

Take a look at Tom's Turbo Garage videos on the LS3 powered Miata build to get an idea of how much work you really have to do
And he did a popular swap that had a kit to make things easier

I don't hate it. I just don't appreciate the idea of it and I don't enjoy looking at it.
I have an old car magazine with the first Audi RS6 on the cover. The headline says ''Four door Porsche''. Get it? It's a sporty German car with four doors and there is no Porsche with four doors. Sadly this this headline soon lost it's humor when the Cayenne happened.

Looks like that from photos, it's a better proportioned Panamera with a bigger trunk and there ain't nothing wrong with that.

Also, about Audi and "four door Porsches": Porsche helped tune the RS2, but insisted it'd be available as a wagon only because a sedan or coupe version would eat their sports car sales.
>>
>>15156860
How dare a company make money and not go bankrupt
>>
>>15156885
For some reason the four seat fact bothers me. It's a four door sedan but technically it can hold the same amount of people like the first Porsche models. Yes, I'm aware of the comfort factor. I own a hatch coupe and it seems to be more practical than the practical version of Porsche. Four seats gives the maximum comfort (a bit less leg room tho) and it has the fifth seat as the extra option if you need to fit more people.

>>15156909
I didn't say that I have a problem with that. I just don't enjoy those cars. Well, the newer ones. I like 924/944's.
I red that the head of Ferrari replied to an idea of a Ferrari version of SUV with ''over my dead body''. Totally not a Ferrari fan but I like that they have their backbone.

The Ruf 3400S was a non-gimped 986 Boxster with the 3.4l from the 996 Carrera and it beat the shit out of the 911s at the time save for the Turbo

I need to save up for my own conversion
>>
>>15157215
I've never found those Ruf wheels appealing.

Will you change the engine?
>>
>>15157256
The engine is the main thing I'm interested in. I'm going to keep my Cup 1 wheels if I can get away with the factory Brembos with the added power

So far the checklist for the big things is:
>3.4l M96 Carrera engine w/ direct oil feed for IMS bearing
>3rd radiator install kit
>996 ECU/DME flash
>6 speed Boxster S transmission w/ LSD retrofit
>ROW M030 suspension
>996 instrument cluster /w flash to fix mileage

So many ideas, so little money

I just bought a 83' 944 for $1,000. It's not running at the moment and I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with it. I'm not much of a mechanic but my friends are and I'm very willing to learn.

The interior isnt the best but I don't really mind, I figure I can get the seats redone or just get covers. The exterior has very little rust and the engine doesn't have much rust at all either.

welp, welcome to the club. when you hit a roadblock ask here as there are quite a few of us with 44's who've been through the process. Get familiar with clarkes-garage.com, rennlist, pelican, 944online, etc.

get ready to do a water pump and timing belt/balance belt change unless you have proof of it being done within the last 4 years/30k miles.

buy a cheap DME Relay right now and swap that out with the one in the car. under the dash. it's a pain in the ass to reach.

good luck, don't let people scare you away from the car.

Continuous Injection System

Basically the intake moves the big metal plate which mechanically controls how much fuel is being pumped into the engine. The injectors aren't times with the engine at all and are always injecting fuel
It's pretty ghetto and kills performance since the only electrical component is the fuel pump. You can convert your car to electronic fuel injection for more power and better fuel economy
>>
>>15158064
How much would a conversion cost? If I could save more money on gas and gain some performance as well, I don't see why I wouldnt.

Also I don't have much tools, I have a set of metric wrenches, some ratchets, and screwdrivers. What tools should I get first? Just buy the ones that I need for the current problem I'm on?
>>
>>15158108
I have no idea, but a lot of people use Megasquirt and get a new ECU. I've also seen conversions using fuel rails from Honda K series engines

Realistically look at spending well over $1k to modernize the fuel delivery system
>>
>>15157638
>>15157812
>>15158064
This is not what's in a 944. They are in 911s and you are right they are a huge pain in the ass.

A 944 has a fuel rail and injectors, that's it.

Did I just get trolled?
>>
>>15158461

Everything is metric and yea I'd just add stuff as you need it. The only Porsche specific tools I have are for the suspension.

Assuming you have a jack and jack stands the only other things I can think of are a multi-meter and breaker bar.You will eventually have a tool collection for that car so save your money for parts/upgrades.

I'm doing this on a 924 Turbo which has CIS, I'm starting with the ignition but next will be EFI, all running on a megasquirt. If you do all the work, I'd say budget at least $1000. Once I'm done I think I might be close to $2000 Canadian with a full ignition/EFI conversion. You can save money at places using parts salvaged from the junkyard or can chose to buy new/custom built.

I'm not asking if >is 944 a good first car XDxD
Just whether the best thread on /o/ thinks I should find one to trade for
>>
>>15182878
Just get a 944 turbo. The N/A 944 and the miata are the same car.
>>
>>15182878
Boxster S if you can stretch your budget
>>
>>15182878
As one who's driven (not owned, but driven), a Cockster, a 944, a NB (both tarbu and stock, plus suspension; this is what I do own), a 300 HP NA, a 968, and a 928, the 944/968 feel heavier, a tad more solid, and "slower" because of the higher mass/larger footprint. However, I fucking loved driving every one of them, and the 924/944/968 with the 2.7 or 3.0 will be just fine. Plus, dat sweet, sweet hatch (which will squeak dreadfully unless it's adjusted properly/has a good seal).
>>
>>15182878
So this guy>>15183461 is fairly accurate, it is a momentum car like a Miata (read: slow acceleration) but it is impeccably balanced and handles like an absolute dream. Plus unlike a Miata you get that coupe feel which some people prefer.

If you want a genuinely fast car with all the above qualities, by a 951, but your budget will be nearly double that of the n/a.

Also, Unless you do the work yourself, OR you don't mind paying premium shop hours then I would avoid them altogether. The major expenses on a 944 are not really the parts prices (save for very few unicorn-ish parts) but paying labor for a shop that knows how to work on 944s and has the car specific tools to do so will add up very quickly.
>>
>>15183972
Truth. And to add to your comment to my comment, there are a few 924/944/968-specific tools that will be of use if you decide to wrench on it yourself. If you live in an area that has a fairly active Porsche club (or at least one that deigns to include the untermenschwagens), there's likely someone who has all of these and others I've missed:
*Flywheel locking tool (super nifty and convenient for keeping at TDC)
*Timing belt tensioner tool (sensitive instrument; handle with care)
*Oil cooler testing tool
*"cheesehead" bits
Also recommended to have when you do the timing belt and water pump service is to change all the front seals in addition to the water pump studs. On one 944 a friend and I were trying to resurrect, we snapped 3 or 4 of them even after generous (over several weeks) applications of penetrating oil, mild shock (hammer, not electricity), and heat. Also broke an extractor off in the block trying to extract one of those studs. Drilling tool steel is an absolute bitch, so be careful. If worst come to worse, just drill the bitch out and Helicoil it. It's not usually a problem, just something to be aware of, like with any other vehicle on the face of the planet.

Once you get the hang of working on them, they're really not that bad. In most cases, you have plenty of places to put your hands and tools. If you don't, try a different angle... My aforementioned buddy and I needed to tighten the crank bolt. We tried from the top-down, failing miserably. From the bottom-up, we had all the room in the world.

I do still want one of these things, but I've recently gotten into motos, need to tear my Miata apart, spend $2k on a good riding mower, etc.
>>
>>15185049
Shit I think we covered almost everything. High five!

That belt tension tool is great, I also have the rear toe eccentric tool and after doing my rear wheel bearings I would highly recommend the arnworx bearing tool. Expensive as fuck but worth it. I ended up having to remove the trailing arms and take them to a shop :/

But these are more for everyday use

Still, these $20 Potenzas I got have plenty of life left in them

Any 944 owners use a Motive Power Bleeder? I'm currently in the middle of the Brake Fluid Change from Hell and need to buy one, but I'm not sure which version I need to buy or if I need to buy an adapter kit to fit it to the master cylinder.
>>
>>15186907
yes I do. you need the "european bleeder adapter". don't get the "universal adapter" it's shit.

consider bleeding your clutch too
>>
>>15186907
>>
>>15187380
This just hooks up to your compressor then?
>>
>>15188579
uh, no it hooks up to the motive bleeder. This is what the european adapter looks like

i mean, i suppose you could do it hooked up to a compressor but you'd have more of a hassle refilling the reservoir without the power bleeder.

This thing? I guess you fill it up with fluid and add pressure yourself with the hand pump
>>
>>15189104
yeah exactly. same concept as using a compressor but you can put fluid in the tank and bleed the brakes by yourself without worrying about the reservoir going dry.

This is amazing. Top fucking notch. What's funny is I have about the same cargo space in my Miata as a Boxster; I just stuff the trunk and passenger seat full. If you've got a wife/gf/bf/boitoi, then I see why you'd need a rig like that.

So, my father is the average middle aged business executive who only owns a hatchback and has been thinking about uprading to a 30k-40k vehicle until the end of this year. He's all into plebian run of the mill family sedans, like Bimers and Benzies, and I want to convince him that getting a second hand cabrio 996 is the superior patrician choice.

Could he DD it with enough practicality, assuming he still keeps his hatchback as a backup? Furthermore, dad is also a bit of a big guy (le 4u bane meem XD), not morbidly obese but definitely on the plus size, would it be too small of a ride for him? Finally, I like to go alongside him and his brother on roadtrips during vacations, how would it be to travel on long trips in the rear seats of those things?
>>
>>15193869
>front seats
The buckets are tight; I'm 5'9" (lelmanlet etc.), 165lbs and they fit me snugly. It's also a fairly low seating position.

>rear seats
These are for short people and children only. Seriously. It's a 2+2, not a four-seater.

The 996 is a solid DD mechanically, and there are plenty of good examples that've had the IMS dealt with, among other things. There are a few problem areas like the coating flaking off the switches if abused and some of the audio units are flaky, but it's a good machine nevertheless. However, if he is portly and you wish to tour with him and your brother, the better P-car would be a Panamera. I hate SUVs with a passion, but the 2nd and 3d gen Cayennes are surprisingly good and (at least from the passenger seat of by buddy's) is like a bearmode sportscar. Think Gronkowski but with the ability to Ironman and set very good 100m hurdles times.

Source: I have a good friend who has a 996 C4S, a 2012 (or so, I'm not certain) Cayenne Diesel, and a 1993 968.

I kinda like it, tbqh. The wheels are ugly but the overall shape is good, in a way it feels a lot like a modernized 935. Say whatever you want, but I think it's nice to see the last classic 911 getting some love from the younger generations in the tuner world.

The yellow one in >>15196006 is the most aesthetically pleasing, imho.

Impossible to get to dent, literally walled off from top and bottom. Thanks for the vid though, I think I might just take it my body shop and see if they can do anything about it.

On another note where the hell can I find a dash. I bought one of these coverlay plastic dash covers, it didn't fit well at all, I was gonna have to do a bunch of trimming to get it to fit. So I just left it there and went back to it today and the Florida sun has warped the fuck out of it already now lol.
>>
>>15197828
It's a starting range, but if I'm the next op I'll change it
>>
>>15197830
Late dashs are kinda hard to find for cheap. Check Rennlist and eBay.

I have one of those carpet dash covers that works for what I want. There are a few guys who have removed and reupholstered themselves, basically just the cost of the vinyl, glue, and staples.

Tempted, but the project with it right now is changing the timing belt, water pump, various external engine seals, cleaning, and getting the turbo-related oil fittings to seal properly this time. I'm a nub and didn't quite get everything correct. It doesn't spew oil by any means, just seeps and makes things nasty underhood. Also need to find out exactly why my cruise control is sticking with a slight accel.

I'd say the 968 is nowhere near on par with the price of the 928 either.

Truly a shame, the 968 is arguably the best transaxle model since it basically combines all the best features of the 924/944 with the 928, but as far as I know it was a flop in sales. What the hell went wrong with this underrated gem, /pog/?

Yea I'd overlooked the actual prices for 968 and used kbb which was foolish. I've updated it for the next thread post. I stand by 8k as a starting price for a decent 928, I'm seeing about 12k as a starting price for a solid 968.
