I don't think many cars age faster than these pieces, although most of them are leading pretty easy lives as 2nd cars.

Every 2nd one you see driving past has a lose exhaust, neigbour told me he is on his 3rd exhaust in 80k km lol

No catch, in Europe used cars are incredibly cheap. I picked up a Saab 9-5 Aero for £800 last year, 92,000 miles, every option you could order (which all worked) and full service history.

I later sold it to my dad for £700, to use that money to buy a MG ZS with 52,000 miles and a full service history.

You can't compare American with European mileage though.

An European car usually goes through hell in European traffic.

>tons of traffic jams
>lots of shitty streets
>high speed autobahn whipping
>shitloads of turns
>usually a lot more city traffic miles than highway miles

100k European miles could easily mean approximately 400k American miles in terms of punishment.
>>
>>15100028
Like why is it so cheap, if insurance out the ass or are they hard to register?

Our shitboxes aren't in that good of condition for that price
>>
>>15100038
you pay several times more in gas in Yurop compared to buying gas in Burgerland but otherwise Twingos are absurdly cheap to buy, maintain and run.
>>
>>15100038
Insurance is pretty similar to American levels, tax can be massive depending on the vehicle. The Saab was £225/year since it was a pre-2001 car, but new car can be as much as £490/year. Petrol is 3-6x as expensive in America as well, so MPG is a huge concern. The saab barely scraped 25 most days for example, which resulted in huge fuel costs for me and the change to the more efficient MG

That said, I'm trying to buy an RX-8 that's got incredibly high tax, insurance and terrible MPG, purely because muh rotary.
>>
>>15100048

used cars are cheaer generally, even in countries where tax and insurance are reasonable (eg germoney)

and used cars with higher running costs than a small hatchback are cheap as fuck, because there isn't much of a market for those here.

>basically 2000$ us shitbox = 500$ euro shitbox.
the euro shitbox will be smaller, but depending how long ago it passed the bi-annual inspection it'll run and, steer and brake alright

multipla kinda related
>>
>>15100075
Dude what the fuck yurop car prices are insanely cheap. That being said I can get a 400 HP shitboxes for like 5k here if I put a little work in.

Why don't euros ever buy these cool cars if they cost nothing?
>>
>>15100037

I find European roads to be wide smooth and straight.

But then again I live in the third world and by the time a car reaches 30,000 km everything on it is broken and you are searching for donor axles while you deal with death wobble and a loud howling on 3 out of 4 wheels. Misfire on 3rd cylinder? No problem !Nzimbu I got 3 more
>>
>>15100080
>the euro shitbox will be smaller
But that also accompanies the smaller European cities better.

I would never drive any of our local cars in Germany. It would be too cumbersome.

Petrol costs. Right now in my shitty little Scottish town, a liter of 95 octane (same as 91 American, different maths) is £1.12, or $1.16. This translates up to £4.20 ($4.38) a gallon, which is cheaper than it used to be. When I started driving in the late 2000s, fuel was as much as £1.40/L at times
>>
>>15100121
I fucked the maths there, £1.12 is $1.61, not $1.16, so it's actually $6.09/G

Also, you'll need to take a close look at the rust.

I think this is why a lot of Americans don't have a good grasp of which cars are quality. The driving conditions here (from Hungary, living in California) are incredibly forgiving and easy on cars. I have a friend with a camaro, and its fun, but the thing struggles just driving up and down the malibu toe-gay, it would fucking die in my country.

Same for Japanese cars. I love them, but the materials they're made out of can't compare to German cars. A Toyota of Lexus will rust away right before your eyes while an old merc trucks on just fine.

Plenty of Japanese cars are on my dream car list, but I will always daily a German car in Europe. Thankfully I'm in California right now and I can have a little fun. Fucking nothing rusts here.

Not a 'shitbox' by any measure per se, but this is my uncle's '98 E320 with 500k KM near Biysk in Russia (Siberia). He lives in a small village and commutes in to town every morning on some of the worst roads imaginable. I'd basically put a 3x multiplier on that mileage to give a more fair representation of the wear and tear that vehicles see out there. An ungodly number of previous owners, interior/exterior still looks good (some respraying done I'm sure). I'd expect it to be a total nightmare ownership experience but he says the suspension is very sturdy and handles the roads as well as the older Toyotas that rule the roost over there. A smattering of electrical issues that keeps him busy, but overall really not that bad. The W210 was the last Benz without a billion "modules" and CANBUS stuff IIRC.

It's all relative, This uncle of mine has owned a W202, W210, and W211 (maybe others). He said the gap between the W210 and W211 in terms of complexity is vast. He can wrench on a W210 no problem in a shade-tree fashion, the W211 was simply unsustainable to own in his locale. W124s have their own set of issues, I'd make the argument that the W210 has fewer weak spots overall, aside from the whole poor rust-proofing fiasco.

Cost of maintenance is way more than financing a newer car.
Breakdown recovery won't touch cars older than 15 years on a standard policy, and charge based on a car's reliability.
Older cars are more expensive to insure, because there's a chance they'll just shit themselves at highway speeds and cause an accident, or understeer into a bridge.

Everyone drives diesel cars here pretty much, thanks to tax and the obsession with mpg. Realistically, the tax is fairly insignificant (a few hundred here and there) and the fuel economy is offset by petrol cars being cheaper.

Never understood the obsession with engine size, but I suppose it is worth nothing that most people drive hatchbacks, think Ford Focus / Fiesta etc and they tend to come with smaller engines. Bigger stuff like Mondeos (similar to the Fusion over there I believe) used to come with a V6 but they are all diesels or small capacity turbos now.

Even then, I used to have a 2.0 petrol Mondeo and it was just fine, did 40 odd mpg and could carry 5 people + luggage in comfort and didn't feel lacking for normal driving. Doesn't help that fuel is reasonably expensive here so there isn't any real demand or purpose for a 5.7 V8 in a normal car for normal driving.

Never understood why taxi drivers prefer diesels for city traffic. I mean that's the only place where small displacement petrol engines excell.

Then again most taxi drivers prefer landbarges and I can't see a 1.6l petrol pull that shit

I own 4 vehicles (BMW 730d, Mercedes E270cdi, BMW 318i, BMW 325i) and I pay 1500€ insurance per year for all of them together
The average annual salary in my country is about 7500 euros

Yup. I i'd wanted to bring one to my homeland, Finland i would have to pay at least 7k in taxes.

They calculate taxes on import cars based on their retail price in Finland... Makes sense, right? No wonder why we drive +10y old cars.

Why shouldn't I get one of those taxis with 800k km on the clock? There's a fine looking E220d from 1997 for just 1500. Taxes are 353 euros per year and insurance for me would be 358 per year. If it dies I can sell the parts on ebay and should be able to make more than 1500. Fucking hell, talk me out of it, my Twingo is sad already.

that's what I wondered, too.

that car isn't either aimed to be ecological, nor is it because of space because there's enough room in such a fuck huge car to get a RWD drivetrain done.

there's literally no reason for it besides laughable cost cutting and this was probably the reason.

That's funny because my stepdad owns a limousine business here in the states. Buys new 740Li's and sells them at 400-500k miles to a company that takes them overseas to Europe and China to resell. Pretty much an unstated fact that miles get taken off the clock at some point in that transaction. The wear and tear from driving 500k mostly highway miles with business executives in suits in the back is going to be significantly less than the same distance in a european city so I imagine it's not too hard to pass them off.
