gasoline will offgas through polyethylene plastic tanks.
if you paint it, it will fall off
if you put solid stickers on, they will blister up.
the material is not 100% impermeable like steel

Fuel vapor vents out the pores of the tank, that's why you can't put a large solid sticker on a plastic tank.
>>

You can only paint metal tanks. Plastic (nylon actually I think) tanks vent gas straight out the pores in the plastic slowly.

so how about a vinyl sticker/wrap that you then go over with a piercing tool to make it breathe? same concept as the perforated vinyl wrap but without the commercially necessary giant dots.

alternatively get multiple prints of your tank art (vehicle wrap is fairly cheap) and just re-wrap it when the seep destroys each previous incarnation.

I'll be honest I'm a bit of a drz400sm fanboy.
Not because I think it's better than any other supermoto. My buddy's ktm 590 is ridiculously more powerful and intense of a ride. I've ridden a couple husqyvnvarisrjiamfoamgas also that are much better all around bikes.

They're lighter, more powerful, and just more fun to ride.

I like my DRZ because I'm a cheap ass. The bike is cheap. They are durable as fuck. If you do break them, they're super easy to work on and cheap to get parts for. 20k on mine original motor and all and it still runs like it's new and I beat the living shit out of it every time I ride it. Buddy's has 33 or 34k and it on its original motor and all still though she's starting to burn oil pretty good but he still tears the shit out of it when we ride.

That said. I love the drz because it's a true jack of all trades and a master of none and it'll keep going forever.

A few days ago i asked you guys for ideas for painting my bike.
One of you suggested letting an airbrush artist go nuts on it an i asked some but they all charge like 500€+
Now i got a friend who is kind of an artist and i thought about letting her sharpie my bike.
I wanted to keep the kawasaki green for it, remove all the stickers and go for it.
The plastics will probably not be a big problem but i can't figure out how to paint the tank.
Can i just grind it with sandpaper like the plastics and clearcoat everything afterwards?

Since it wasn't specified I assumed that more stars meant larger and heavier for size and weight, expensive purchase price for cost and expensive maintenance for upkeep.
>>
>>15052293
how can you misunderstand the concept of "stars" that badly?
+1 for font tho
>>
>>15052293
The more stars the better.
So a pig fat bike has like one star on size and weight, while a 100kg bike can get 4 or 5 stars for that
>>
>>15052303
"Stars" are nearly always positive, following that line of reasoning you'd figure that more stars meant a reasonably small and light weight, super cheap to purchase and super cheap to maintain motorcycle.
I instead figured that the stars simply represented quantity, ie. large and heavy, expensive purchase price and expensive upkeep.

pretty much yeah. You'll definitely want a 2k clear coat on the tank at least, spilt gasoline will eat through anything else that's available in a spray can.

Remove and empty tank (and all its fittings) and leave it to air out for a while before fucking with it. Tape it up well, and don't be afraid to sand the shit out of it till you hit bare metal if you feel the need.

Got a issue it my bike, starts up fine and ideals from cold but after i ride on the motorway ill come to some lights and the idle becomes real ruff and stalls then it becomes difficult to turn over. The only way i can avoid that is by holding the throttle to keep the revs steady but when i try and set off from the lights there is no power.
Its an efi bike.

What do?

Tried a few bikes today, hunting for a first bike

>MT-03: fun but I'm way too tall for it. hips and knees felt like death after I got off
>Ninjette 300: same
>er6n: fast and comfortable, pretty agile
>CBR500r: linear power delivery, slower than the er6n but still no slow poke
>Ninja 650rl w/ full Yoshimura exhaust: the sound is sexual, especially the burbly deceleration noise. Quite a bit of torque, scared me a bit when I powered out of a corner and found myself going almost double the speed limit very easily

pls recommend a bike for me a big tall man

Also check out the SV650, Suzuki's take on the 650cc twin, if you haven't. If you like the Ninja you might like it more.
I personally like 3 or 4 cylinders and don't really care about the parallel versus V config wars (though V2's almost always sound better than I2s)

It's the bike itself, they probably just need a TPS adjustment or something, it's the 0% throttle to just cracking it on that's rather sudden on them, they aren't fly by wire so there's a lot of simple mechanical stuff you can do to take that initial bite of the throttle out though.

so many bikes have this today. i rode my friends fz09 and its first gear is so sketchy during turns due to this. a remap is almost required. some corners need 1st gear to get acceleration out, and such a jerky application of throttle can really fuck you up when leaned over.
haven't ridden the gsxs, but it seems disappointing from the reviews. i was hoping for a dope 750, i might have bought it in a year or two.

Fork leaking out of the Simmering? Easiest thing to repair, thanks to Telelever. No special tools or skill required.

i'm glad that they sorted that out on the FJ-09 (according to reviewers).
that bike was literally made to suck the money out of my wallet. I'm not at all in a situation where it'd be smart to buy a third bike, but I keep finding myself contemplating what the payments would be on it if I sold off my FZ6 and dropped at least half the cost on the down payment.
Gotta keep repeating that I love my current bike and can wait till they show up on craigslist. Still covet hard when my neighbor rides by on his.

Yes, and I know how to fix it. Now I just need to deal with shitty sites that don't send my shit for some stupid reason. I did get a special tool though, a seal puller. The guide I looked at advised it and it was only €5 so why not.

Nice police state you got, in Finland you can carry proper knives in public (even on your belt) as long as they're sheathed or used for something non-violent. No knives in public events or bars/clubs, though (for obvious reasons).

Even firearms (not worn but in a suitable container/case/bag) but you can bet your ass every cop and security guard you come across will ask you why the fuck you're carrying a gun in public.

Sorry for not reading the entire Thread, but I think here are more Bike Br/o/s than in the general questions thread.

What would you say is a good mileage for a used Bike, for most manufacturers. I'm looking at a Ducati, they are supposed to be quite reliable so mileage might be even looked at differently.

At cars I think 200.000km is quite used 250.000 is a wonder for most manufacturers.

The Bike in question has 30.000km mileage. How run down is it?

the correct answer to what you just wrote would be several paragraphs long. Start reading up, talk to actual bikers who ride different types of bikes, then come back and ask better questions.
But what I CAN tell you, being a not-ever-biker: Don't buy that bike.

Ducatis are not reliable by any means. Reliability depends a lot on maintenance, both routine and preventative. Ducati bikes tend to always need something worked on, don't be told any different. If you go with any bikes from the big 4 (suzuki, honda, kawasaki, and yamaha) then you should be alright. There's plenty of new buyers guides online that you can check out and get a feel for what matters when buying a used bike.

And don't get worried about mileage unless it's a busa, but that's for another discussion

The reason that would be bait is that Ducatis are notoriously unreliable bikes.
For a real answer, bikes tend to not last as many miles as cars as a general rule, but that's made up for by the fact that they're cheaper and easier to find used at low mileage (due to weekend riders selling off their toys).
Japanese street bikes are the most reliable as well as among the least expensive (and much of /dbt/ agrees generally best overall).
They'll go for 200k+ km if maintained, but I wouldn't buy them at high mileage unless you know they were well maintained. Usually won't be worth it, you won't save much over lower-mileage used bikes.

Reliability tiers go:
top - japanese big 4 (all around even, with Yamaha barely edging out the rest)
mid - BMW, KTM, Triumph (will last a long time but require more maintenance and more frequent faults to fix)
low - Italian bikes (same as Italian cars, great when they work but break often and are expensive to fix)
Harley - gotten a bit better very recently but even in the last couple decades have had design flaws causing engines to destroy themselves shortly after warranty ends.

suzuki gs500
(but don't, they're shit, better off with a 250)

for reals though, I'm a big fan of 650cc twins and non-supersport 600cc i4s for starter bikes if you're not a dumb kid who'll immediately WOT and kill yourself.
If you're on a real budget, grab the best-looking Ninja 250 or Ninja 500 you can find for under 2 grand (assuming you're in the US).

I had the shit scared out of me when I got my svs home yesterday. Did a break down inspection and cleaned up everything, why people don't clean their bikes, I have no idea. Looked deeper at the forks and saw that slit at the bottom, about lost my shit because I thought it was cracked. NOPE, just a clamp.

Seeing as you haven't been given a straight answer, I'll chime in. 30k is nothing, that bike is in brilliant condition. A lot of people will say to get something less sporty as a first bike, but as long as you get a gopro or similar and have it running every time you ride, you'll be fine. Ducati make amazing bikes that will last you for the rest of your life.
