I'm going to sound like a huge fag but the other day it was raining and I was driving my grandma around for her errands, and she kept bitching because my tires would spin almost everytime I left a spot (v8 and dirt cheap tires). Finally got frustrated after 90 minutes of continuous bitching, pulled the out the joint I keep in my visor, lit her up and drove crazy as fuck back to her house. She said she'll never get in my car again, which sucks for her because I'm the only person she knows that will drive her around all day just for gas money

>>
>>15023622
No you benchracer. He is right

Engine braking fucks up several parts of the engine. It exists, but it must not be used constantly. You can either slightly use your fucking brakes or you can engine-brake, slightly fuck up your tranny and flywheel, SERIOUSLY big chance of blowing the engine if you engine brake at too many RPM, increased engine wear anyways, and increased fuel consumption.

Be fucking smart. When you are going to stop leave it at neutral and slightly use the brakes until you stop.
>>

>>
>>15023653
Engine braking is the opposite of rev match, idiot.

The entire principle of engine braking is that the engine will be working slower than the input shaft and that once you drop the clutch the tranny will force the engine to rev up, but the engine ECU will force the engine not to exceed speed.

Rev match is changing gears WITHOUT leaving space in revs between the input shaft and the crank.

Opposite things. Either way, unless you are about to speed up after braking, down-shift-rev-matching (or heel-toeing) its useless and only wastes fuel.

>>
>>15023626
Using = putting stress on = wearing out. If you're shifting at all, you are slipping the clutch ever so slightly and there are small differences in actual and ideal speed that put wear on the synchros. Is it that hard to understand, that using a part puts wear on it?

Brakes are cheaper/easier to replace than clutches, so I'd rather wear the brakes more than the clutch

>>15023676
If your engine and fuel are absolute shit the extra tiny bit o compression might cause detonation but I don't fucking know, I'm not worried about the engine. It's designed to deal with bringing itself down from 5k to 2k if you let off the throttle. The engine isn't a sacrificial device.

Engine braking is forcing to have mismatched crank rpm to input shaft rpm to force the car to be stopped by the ECU controlling the rev limiter of the car.

>>
>>15023796
Do you know what rev matching is????? Rev matching is when you push the clutch in, rev up the engine and dump the clutch making a downshift smooth. Rev matching is a crucial step to engine braking correctly.
>>
>>15023811
Always rev-match in the corners
this doesn't prevent you from engine braking
engine braking is the reduction in speed AFTER you rev match
NOT dumping the clutch and lurching the car with the revs mismatched
>>
>>15023801
I was wrong when i thought that engine braking only meant forcing the engine to the redline, but the two principles are fucking opposite.

Rev matching: When you drop the clutch the car wont even shake, RPM gauge will never jump

Engine braking: Your car will shake, RPM gauge goes up because you downshifted, car will brake slightly (that's what produced the shake)

You dont need an PHD in physics to know the difference.
>>
>>15023812
It has nothing to do with engine braking. In fact, a perfect rev match would cause no braking effect at all...which is why it's done in the first place.
Stupid fags.
>>
>>15023807
You're an idiot if you take the test in manual and you coast into neutral and stop that is an automatic fail lol. I can tell you ride the bus.

>>
>>15023812
>Rev matching is when you push the clutch in, rev up the engine and dump the clutch making a downshift smooth.
Rev matching is when the input shaft and crankshaft are spinning at the same RPM and dropping the clutch is smoth and without shake.

Engine braking is when the crank runs slower than the input shaft, and dropping the clutch forces the car to brake a little

If you mean downshifting while rev matching, that's not engine braking
>>
>>15023821
It is not. Stop trying to look like a 13 year old genius. It makes you look ignorant.
>>

>>
>>15023823
Have you ever driven a manual car?

>>
Braking by downshifting without rev matching and scrubbing your clutch material off is not engine braking, that's clutch braking. You should aspire to avoid this.
>>
>>15023815
>rev-match in the corners

nigga, what? you obviously drive some slow shitbox and are retarded

>down-shifting in a corner

you should be entering the corner at the proper speed and gear. not changing gears during the corner

if you have to down shift you've already missed the whole thing entirely.

engine braking is not a performance driving technique, its more like fuel-saving economy driving. if you're engine braking then you're not accelerating or decelerating to your maximum extent

however that said powerful RWD cars will oversteer from engine braking.

Similar but you follow the car's speed with the gears and the crank
>>
>>15023897
>having no compression

when i let off the throttle in-gear and high in the RPM band it noses the car forward

its called having TORQUE idiot. if your car won't engine brake at speed its because your engine compression can't overcome the forces required to slow down the vehicle

letting off the throttle in a powerful car is how you spin out. it engine brakes violently and will upset the car

watch any mustang do a burnout and crash ever.

>bang gears into 2nd/3rd doing a burnout
>wheel speed; 100+ Mph
>let off throttle and spin out killing people
>>
Also rolling in the highest gear saves gas, coasting in neutral Save's less gas than both overdrives
>>
>>15023910
an automatic will engine brake if its manually selected into a lower gear. until you tap the brakes and the torque converter is unlocked. but then you're already braking.
>>
>>15023887
It's proper according to people that haven't driven on the roads in 50 years. In a modern car, you have enough torque to not actually lug the engine unless you're trying to start in third.

It's proper according to race drivers who actually have a need to suddenly accelerate. In the real world, you suddenly brake. Period. If someone rear ends you, they are at fault for not maintaining a safe following distance. Period. You probably have a car that will let you survive the event without severe whiplash instead of a 94 civic.
>>
>>15023929
I know, I'm just saying if he lets off the gas and his car doesn't start engine braking automatically he's most likely in an automatic.
>>

the reason they do this is because ten other assholes before you have driven like retards trying to show off and they don't want you to do the same dumb shit those other guys did.
>>
>>15023925
No it doesn't.

Fuel is related to RPM. The higher the RPM the higher the fuel consumption.

*supposedly* the Idle has to be the lowest point at which the engine can ignite using compression and have enough torque to start moving the car, and gettting at a lower RPM than that will either make issues when moving the car or the car will just shut down.

You're not very smart, but then again you think a sequential downshift with zero skips in which neutral is only used when shifting is the proper way to drive.
>>
>>15023938
Yes it does

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy-efficient_driving?wprov=sfla1
>>
>>15023934
or if you're in a manual in an overdrive gear, depending on gearing ratios/rpm/engine torque

a corvette cruising at 1600 rpm going 70mph isn't going to engine brake much in 7th gear. also depends on rolling resistance if you want to include other factors

your civic is cruising at 3000+ rpm in final gear, which is why it will engine brake a lot sooner. like a truck hauling logs
>>
>>15023938
>Fuel is related to RPM. The higher the RPM the higher the fuel consumption.

This part isn't right at all. when you let off the gas peddle the throttle body closes. Which in turn restricts the fuel injectors. You can be at 6k rpm and then let off the throttle and you will be using as much gas as if you were in neutral. Which is why the engine will start to slow causing engine braking.

>the engine consumes no fuel if you're off the throttle and above idle speed
You might say it consumes little, but unless you genuinely dont know how the engine works, you cant say that the car isn't consuming fuel as long as its still on.

More RPM = More fuel
The more time at idle/low RPM = less fuel consumption
>>

>>15023810

>>

Obviously the rpm increases because I downshifted yet travelling the same speed.

If you're rolling to a stop on the brakes and pop out of 4th or 5th and then pop it into first or whatever appropriate gear when you stop/need to accelerate again, there will be no abnormal wear on the synchros. You do not understand the synchromesh.
>>
>>15026144
If you're really that worried about it, then you can double clutch when you downshift.

>I don't know what you all are doing wrong.

Fuck easy to explain.

It's about confidence.

Women always need to feel safe.
If you radiate a certain level of confidence in what you're doing, you can get away with the most hooniest hoons and they will giggle.

If you seem like some insecure manlet, they will be scared even when you just rev-match.

It's a combination between your body language, actual skills, physical attributes and fucking confidence.

Fair enough, my mate's rubbish though - rims are all fucked up from him misjudging everything, and can't hold a line. Him freaking out about me going 65 in a 70 zone is just annoying, considering he randomly goes 140-170 in 50 zones and has almost lost his license three times now.

You are right.
A friend of mine drives like shit and doesn't even understand the basic mechanical concepts of rev matching and stuff like that. Hell, he downshifts without rev matching on the highway and shit and I can feel the physical pain the gearbox is going through.

Anyways, we have this female friend in common, and he would always drive like a dick pretending to hoon and shit and almost got into several crashes.

When she's riding in my car and I hoon it, she ain't scared. She loves it, even. I remember this time when it had rained all day long so the streets were still wet and I floored it at a light, spinning my wheels like a mad cunt and she asked me to do it several times and she even recorded it.

It's all about confidence.

This times a billion. My instructor literally at a stop grabbed my shifter while simultaneously asking if I was in gear and said you should basically ALWAYS be in gear. Period.

>The most intelligent post in the thread. >Nobody responds to it

Engine braking is forcing the movement of the car to turn over the engine. The resistance of the engine compression and the drivetrain slows the car. This uses no fucking fuel and does nothing negative to the car.
>>
>>15023968
There is no explosion idiot. You don't hear your car running when you are idling, because the wheels are moving the crank and therefore the pistons.
