>>
Are early 90s Miatas reliable cars for daily drivers?
>>
>>15013249
Yes. Probably not quite as realiable as a Corolla or Civic, but still very good. And it would be a lot more fun to drive than either of those
>>
Im intersted in a miata, but also S2k
Is the s2k basically a miata, but actually fast? A shitlot expensiver too tough. Also like the s2k look more.
I could literally get the brand new miata for only a months loan more than a used s2000.
Which is more reliable?

>Which is more reliable
depends
with an s2k you get what you pay for, and nowadays you have to pay a lot. a ton have been ridden hard and abused by kids, so you have to look out for anything under 10k not being worth it due to maintenance you'd have to put in afterwards. generally in my area for a good s2k barely ridden by a boomer is around 15k. compared to a miata which can be found in the same condition for 5k. They're hondas, they're reliable, but at this point they're not bulletproof and most likely have been abused.
>>
>>15013275
>Is the s2k basically a miata, but actually fast?
faster in a straight line stock obviously. but in terms of handling, when i was weighing up the two cars (S2k vs NC) i found it was a pretty even split on forums on the internets between people preferring either car, and i was surprised a few people said they switched from the s2k to the miats and preferred how it drove.
>>
>>15013249
mine has been great to me, 93 1.6, daily driven for 3 years now with 30k added to it under my ownership

only parts that really needed replacing were the original clutch, slave cylinder, thermostat, water pump and a radiator fan

for the most part if you get any sort of weird sound or weird behavior just hit google and you will probably be led to a cheap fix from the miata garage that you can take care of in 30 minutes or will lead you to find the real problem

urethane 2k primer as sealer and block again
base coat
urethane clear coat, sand and buff

Got like 800 dollars into paint supplies so far and it's a lot of fucking work but it's coming out really nice.

trying to find it some smaller, 17" wheels.
Getting a little tired of these massive 18" that rub on full lock, and tramline like crazy.

any recomendations? keep in mind its 5x120.

Everything that i've found that isn't oem looks like shit, and i can't find the OEM wheels that look good for my car anywhere. (Style 32 or 17" Style 18)

I want to turbo the Miata this year. But I'd like to slowly acquire parts and add them as I go to an extent. What mods should I buy first that can be added to the stock motor before it's full blown turbo?

I'm thinking
>MSPNP
>Stiffer clutch
>Bigger injectors

Already have
>Wideband O2
>Aftermarket oil pressure and temp gauge
>>
>>15014439
You're on the right track. The ecu, injectors and clutch are a good call in terms of the first things you should do. Something you may consider is a catback, that you can then hook up to whatever downpipe you end up running. Another thing is any suspension mods you wanna do you should get that done before rather than after.

Also any way to reduce wheel hop on launch?
>>
>>15014552
Go for poly bushings, that should drastically reduce wheel hop. Also for the previous thing, maybe the frame rail bracing is a good call as well, I've heard it makes a ton of difference in regards to chassis flex.
>>
>>15014393

There's a clean as fuck '90 Miata for 5k with 40k miles on it a few miles from me. It has absolutely no rust. Should I get it or hold off until I find a good deal for a 1.8?
>>
>>15014619
That's the beauty of the illegal as fuck rx7. You daily the miata, but then at night you tear shit up in the canyons, in your fast as fuck loud as fuck rx7, and run from the cops if they decide to chase.
It's a bit romanticized, I know, but that's the kind of thing I'd like to do.
>>
>>15014629
>5k
>'90
nah mate, no way. Even if it's perfect, it's still an early one and those came factory fucked basically. For that amount you can get a rust free 1.8 that may need some paint work, but will last you far longer without any major maintenance.
>>
>>15014698
Unfortunately I've yet to see a non rusted NA8 for under 6k that wasn't an automatic. Miata prices seem crazy high around here.
>>
>>15014797
Where you at fampai? Over here in the 3rd world I got a 96 NA8 with the torsen, tan interior, power everything and no rust, babied 80k miles weekend car, for about 7k US with a hardtop.

>>
>>15014907
I agree. Paint on it's amazing and the interior is great other than some cracking on the leather of the driver's seat, but no hardtop. Should I go for it anyways?
>>
>>15014950
If you get no snow, yeah. Otherwise I'd think about looking for a hardtop. If the car is in good condition though, go for it. You won't regret it if it's been taken care of.
>>
>>15015056
I haven't gotten to inspect it closely, but it looks pristine. We got two inches of snow last year, so I'm going to say I could live without one. Though I imagine it'd be cheaper to get a carbon fiber hardtop than to find a matching one if I ever do want to get one.
>>
>>15015056
>>15015071
I also didn't see any rust at the rear rockers when I did see it up close, so I'm guessing it's rust free all around. Are M editions really worth that much more than a regular one?
>>
>>15015071
Nah, you can get a hardtop for around $500, $600 if you want the one with a defroster. I'd get the hardtop just to not fuck up the softtop with the snow. What most people do is buy whatever hardtop they can get their hand on and get it painted with color matched paint at a good shop. In terms of weight, the hardtop's made of smc (sorta fiberglass), so it's pretty fucking light.
>>
>>15015107
Not like a 2-3k premium, but something like 1k extra isn't unreasonable. They got good rims and a really nice paintjob. Especially the M with the bbs rims, that one is really worth the extra investment.
>>
>>15015117
doesn't only the '95 M have the BBS? Some idiot in my city put ricer wheels on a '95 M and sold the BBS on Craigslist for 200 because he just thought they were stock. One of my friends bought then and then flipped them for 800. Shit was hilarious.

I feel like it'd be really hard to match the paint if there was any fading at all. I could be wrong though, I've never needed to color match car stuff.
>>

Nice mate, hope you enjoy it. Any plans for future mods?
Here's mine, I'm planning on a roll bar, butterfly brace+chassis bracing, some quality coilovers eventually, sparco sprint buckets + 6 points, a set of advanti racing storm 2 in 15x8bronze, and a nice prototipo momo wheel.
After I'm done with the handling mods, then comes the big turbo upgrade.
>>
I already started a thread about this but I figure I'll get more accurate info in this general. So I'm looking at a 2004 mazdaspeed miata, all stock, 137k km for $6700 mechanically fine, clean vin. What is the problem areas on these cars? It seems like a good price for a fun car but I don't want to surprised a week from when I take it home
>>
>>15015974
What road?
>>
>>15013759
This.
First thing I did getting my MX5 was replace all fluids (except tranny and diff, tranny seems fine for now) and threw the stickiest tyres I could afford (Direzza Z2) at it. Corners like a mad cunt, but now the suspension is the weak link on standard 14x5.5's.
>>
Temperaturegaugegettinghotinhere from last thread guy.

Got a thermostat and rad cap to put on tomorrow, hopefully that cures is. Old rad cap is wet under the warning label, thermostat unknown.

If it turns out to be the pump, what else can I do while I'm there? Done timing 500km ago, couldn't afford pump and cap/thermo at the same time.
I'll check the T junction on the housing while I'm there, not sure what else can be done. Timing rollers (if they're a thing) maybe? Got a weird itty bitty supercharger noise when I rev since getting the belt done.

Correction on this - the 1.8 came in the 1994-1997 models. The ideal Miata is a 94 or 95 because it has the 1.8 but is still OBD1. A lot of 94-95's in manual with a torsen are a little more expensive because of this.

Honestly look for any 1.8 model with a torsen and as low miles as you can get. Check for rust under the front fenders, undercarriage and lower rear fenders by the drain plugs. Even high mileage ones will probably run a while if the maintenance was at least semi-caught up with.

I can agree with this, my miat was fun as shit to drive while it was stock, and I still want to find a good condition sunburst or mariner blue and leave it untouched.

If it's a "normal" color though (white, red, black, silver) then I say don't give a shit like it's some rare collector gem, and have at it with the mods.
>>
I asked in a recent Miata thread if a car like this would be good to learn automechanics on.

One anon gave a very good explanation and tips ("use a tent!"), but I forgot to reply in time.

I'd like to learn to do my own mechanics. After seeing so many great looming Miatas here, I also want to customize it myself (as much as possible).

Now I'm looking a bit at used Miatas (MX-5 over here) but the second hand market is huge and I have no idea what the best base to start with is.
>>
>>15016002
Yes, 250whp is reliable and obtainable for about 3 grand if you're thrifty and do all the work yourself. Just don't let that rust run away on you otherwise it'll become a shit box real fast. Mazda metal is poverty tier and it sounds like you're Canadian. Don't drive it in the winter or it will start to fall apart on you

The Miata is a great car to learn on. It's one of the best handling cars out there, they are cheap, very easy to work on, great on gas and have huge aftermarket. The best par for beginners is almost everything you can do maintenance or mod wise has been documented online. I wish I had bought a Miata as my first car.

As for which one to buy - see here

There is a slight process to get them on. They attach to the front upper windshield the same way softops do with OEM latches, clip on the rear with the obvious straps and have a middle support bar that most people can't see.

>They look good when the car is sitting still but you have to be the fucking hulk to cinch it down enough for it not to flap around and make awful noises at speed
Wut? Mine is very tight and the straps are adjustable to tighten if it ever did get loose. Do you use the middle PVC support bar? Don't see how it could flap around if it's installed correctly. I've had mine up to 85mph and its rock solid.

Tbh the only thing good about them is the transmission. Best one you can put in a miata. For the extra money you spend on one of these you can buy a super clean NA and turbo it yourself to much better numbers.

That being said thats a good price. Usually they are 10k+ which is absolutely not worth it.

Nah dude 1994 is the sweet spot for the 1.8 engine. Every year they got slightly heavier and the small power improvement isn't worth it. There's also other little things about the 94 which make them more desirable like OBD I and chrome bezels around the gauges (which no other 1.8 year has) and an actual oil pressure gauge instead of an idiot light (which again no other 1.8 year has).

OBD I is generally easier to deal with for tuning purposes/ turbo applications. Also, depending on your location this might not be an issue anyway, but less bullshit to deal with when getting your car inspected.

It's really not something most people should care about desu.

Saying one is better than the other is purely subjective. I've owned both and currently have a 1.6.

Obviously the 1.8 is a little more powerful, mostly felt in the midrange, which is nice. The 1.6 though sort of feels more free-revving and even though i hate this term, more "peppy."

megasquirt is certainly one option

If it's anything like an NA, it might be the wire sleeving retainer clipping on the corner as it's broken off.

If it's anything like the NA, it will yank that fucker so hard it could pop out plastic/spring that sits in the motor as a tension keeper (?).

Take off panels, look and feel while winding up and down. A zip tie might help you. Good time to grease the regulator, too...

Hey guys, quick question. I just bought my first miata a few months ago, and I had it get inspected about 2 weeks ago. Anyway, they replaced my belts which I was kind of expecting would need to be done soon since it's sitting at 108k. All was fine until a day or two ago I noticed a loud squealing noise when trying to turn while idling or when I turn my AC or heat on. I figure that my alternator belt is just a bit loose, is this something that I can maybe fix myself or should I just take it back to the shop? If it's an easy fix I'd rather do it myself since I don't want to be out of a car for a day.

You could try an easy out but desu I've never had one work, if it was stuck enough to snap the head of the screw/bolt off, the easy out isn't really gonna do any better.
Also, after the easy out snaps off inside the bolt, you can no longer drill it as the easy out is hardened steel.
I would say drill it out and try a helicoil or time-sert.
For the stripped one you could try turning it counter clockwise with a very sharp pointed chisel and hammer, I've successfully used that trick a few times.

Yeah, you've got the fact that it's matte black (one of the most difficult colors to clean and keep clean in my opinion) and when you combine that with chalk it's messy..you're basically going to have to wash any spot of chalk drawings that you don't like (dicks will be drawn literally daily if you leave the chalk out, but sometimes you get a gem of a drawing that you know will have to go away someday) if you don't wash the chalk off and wipe it off instead then it just looks bad. However I do love it! If it weren't for the fact that I really want to do a REALLY bright color I would keep it chalkboard because to me it's worth it. I may end up keeping my hood chalkboard and wrap the rest of the car.

I am planing on getting some 14x7 RPF1's. There is really only two performance street tire options left for 14" wheels. 195/60 Falken Azenis or 185/60 Dunlop Direzza ZII Star Spec. Which one should I get? The Falkens are cheaper which leads me to believe the Dunlops are better. Thoughts?
>>
>>15033928
I've used both. Star specs are very sticky and are popular in autocross. The azenis aren't as soft therefor have less grip but will last longer.

I used them for drifting. Star specs in the front because of the amount of grip and response. Azenis I didn't much care for when it came to drifting because they chunk up when they start to melt. Not really an issue for most people.

Somewhat comfortable. You can remove foam from the seat to sit lower. Get a hub to move the steering wheel closer or further.

My only issue with headspace comes from going over bumps, my head will sometimes hit the headliner on my hardtop.

When I bought by montego blue, the guy has these old-person looking 18inch silver wheels on it that weigh like 24 pounds each. My car is sluggish as hell accelerating.

I am going to sell them and get some new rims and tires. I've decided on getting sport comp 2s from discounttiredirect on ebay, but can't decide on the wheels.

I know I want lightweight 15s. I was looking at the Konig Heliums, which are 11.5 pounds each, but some people say they are so light that they snap going over potholes. How true is this?

What are some other reccomendations for lightweight 15inch wheels that I can get off of ebay cheap (I can get the Heliums like 300$ a set right now) which may be less prone to breaking? Dont tell me to buy some $200 each wheel wheels.

ALSO, the big question: my car is dark blue/green. Should I get black or bronze wheels? I don't like silver.

>>
>>15033928
I've used both in a competitive setting, albeit on 15x7s. If youre looking for all out performance, the Direzzas will blow the falkens away. The Falkens are a great lower-cost performance tire though, and if you're not going to be doing any competitive driving and don't need the extra grip I think the Falkens are more than enough, pluss they have a pretty neat looking tread pattern.

Honestly I love the way some nice meaty tires look on a 14 inch wheel, though if you want more options 15 is the way to go.

Jesus. I paid 7k for my '96, but it's been babied, 80k miles, power windows and mirrors, cruise control, LSD, tan interior, and hardtop. On top of everything in my third world shithole cars are normally worth twice as much as in the US.

The miata market is silly right now. Worst part is I'm thinking about getting a second one and the only one I like for a price I'd be willing to pay for it is 800 miles away.

Well the 1.6 revs better, I agree the 1.8 is a little bit quicker but it's just a car it doesn't matter on. You can't even feel the difference too much. If you have a good condition 1.6 you're already set. The 1.8's were heavier and were really uncomfortable with high revving. The only advantage to them is they take boost better. Miatas have been known to be better with the smaller engines.

What I can only assume to be the very special edition challenger miata. They sent it to the bottom of the challenger deep in 1993 and pulled it out this year. Nice find anon.

Seriously though, did you pull that engine out of the fucking ocean? Holy fucking shitballs
>>
>>15038870
Yeah, they nasically set the standard fore shops. Flyin Miata and Moss Miata are basically the 2 OG miata shops. Aside from that you can look into the mazda shops like racing beat and the like.

Yes, they are very well known and have a very good reputation, just make sure to cross shop other companies cuz their prices are often not the best

I was just up at Laguna Seca on Friday racing with Nor Cal Racing Club! They have their whole Miata school thing up there. Not a fan. I have a modified C5 Z06. I was passing up Miatas and BRZs/FRSs like they were standing still. Fun little cars, I imagine. Their cornering can be pretty impressive. Thing is, I have 275/325mm tires and modified suspension with chamber, so I stick at least as well as almost all the Miatas people bring to the track.
>>
>>15037628
When they turn brown like that the plastic gets very brittle and is prone to cracking just fyi.
>>
>>15039036
Man, I need to get some chamber up in my suspension too.

I'm planning to sand my bonnet off completely, then polish it and leave it that way. Shouldn't be a problem since it's aluminium, right ? Anyone ever done this before ?

Also, you know the door has that frame for the little panel window, should I paint that black like stock or paint it blue?
>>
>>15040671
I'm thinking blue everywhere there is paint, including the lip. It's a sexy colour anyway so why not?
>>
>>15040676
Ok, I think I'm gonna paint the front angled part blue and the part that's vertical I will leave black since the windows will be tinted and a vertical blue line in the middle of a black panel will look odd.
Sound good?

>>
>>15040754
Kinda same but I also like the lip painted since it stands out more and makes the car look lower than a black lip would.
>>
>>15040783
I don't like the way body color painted aero add-ons don't match the lines of the car. I think it looks more aggressive with the modified, aftermarket look. Plus I'd have concerns with the flexible polyurethane cracking the paint when it bends and paint adhesion. But you clearly have about a billion times more automotive paint experience than me so meh.

Black vertical would look good if tinted. I'd still paint the lip though.

I just saw this haha they're nice. They aren't super well padded and they don't hold you in like a Bride does but they're considerably better than stock seats. I bought the car with them in it so I have no idea how much they cost, I also can't find them anywhere online to even have the slightest idea. The only information that I can find on them is http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=84386 where it is talked about that these seats are a JDM item only available to be bought from Japan and imported here. According to that they sell retail for $1500 (if they are real which I can't figure out how to determine whether or not they are).
>>
>>15042271
>legitmately JDM and have to import
>not amazing at holding you in
damn, I figured
I guess I haven't looked into it but I'm curious if there are good seats that are comfy and yet capable for both track and DD duty, and look classy and not RACEKARRRR boi racer.
I know some people swap in lotus seats
>>
>>15042313
So I just talked to a friend of mine and he said my seats could be knockoffs. Some forums say there were only two Mazdaspeed buckets that were made by bride but others say that there was a third made directly by Mazdaspeed themselves. So I'm not really sure what to think about them. I'm trying to find these but can't even find them on Ebay..I really like Bride Lowmax seats but those are like $750 or so..

So I heard that 2009 NCs have better engines (forged internals?) than the earlier ones, which is why the redline is a bit higher.
If I get a 2008, is the engine more prone to breaking? Or should I just not worry about it

forged internals are only really necessary if you're aiming for silly power (high 200s or 300+ bhp). your engine isn't just going to fall apart by itself without them.

mine's a high mileage 2007, 196 bhp, redline lifted to 7200 rpm (from 7000). pic related

Garrett T2560r, I have an issue where if I tighten the compressor side 8mm nut too tight the turbine wheel gets stiff and stops moving freely.

I got it to the point where I could get it as tight as I could without hindering the spinning capabilities of the wheel but the exhaust and compressor turbines are able to slip on the rod when there's force twisting them against each other.

Wtf is going on?

How much can I expect to spend on repairs if I get a NA miata? Assuming i neither dd it or let it rot over the winter, just the occasional drive a few times a week.
>>
>>15045602
Very little outside of routine maintenance. NAs, actually all miatas, are generally very reliable and most of the parts that are somewhat prone to fail are dirt cheap anyway.
>>
>>15045674
That's what I thought. Friend of mine who bought a new hyundai i10 claims a miata will cost me more than his car in the long run, say five years, but i think it's the post-purchase rationalization talking.

I don't even care if it comes close to costing as much since i will have been driving a fun rwd coupé while he's driving a shitbox
>>
>>15045830
Yeah m8 running costs are really low for a miata. Plus the aftermarket is massive, pretty much anything you need (or want) for the car can be found online somewhere. I suppose in one sense your friend is right, you could spend many times the value of the car in upgrades and various modifications if you want to.
>>
>>15045830
Hyundai a shit anyway. Mazda is more reliable than that heap.
>>
>>15045602
Depends, I bought a salvaged title which probably has the most work you would have to do if the engine is good. In terms of maintenance even with mine it's just changing fluids, a new brake master cylinder, new belts, and a few gaskets. Apart from that it's the common stuff like cracked dash, new rear license plate panel, that kind of stuff. You could spend a LOT more than the value of the car in the aftermarket which I happen to be doing but I'm a show car and drift builder so..
>>
>>15047975
your dash was cracked? I've never seen a cracked miata dash
