The only thing those lack are the flared fenders.

I have a buddy who's a big Porsche and BMW guy. He's owned both an E39 and E60 M5 and he prefers the E39. Says torque is much more noticeable than on the E60.

The Euro 3.2 is shit too though. Makes all of its power at high rpms, has a weaker gearbox (same as 5 speed in Euro 3.0/USA cars, just with a extra gear added), crap ass double VANOS, and taller/longer gearing so it's not even dramatically quicker than a US 3.2/Euro 3.0

A lot of the spare parts (intake manifold/fuel system bits) are also becoming NLA more often as time passes on the Euro cars. As a big E36 M3 head I'd honestly say the Euro 3.0 is the best car, followed by the US 3.2 (shorter gearing and simpler, more common engine that's way cheaper to fix and more reliable, solid rotors are cheap to replace and same size as Euro floating roters). The appeal of the M3 was never the engine. It was the brilliant chassis/suspension that still made the 240hp US version quicker and better to drive than other cars (NSX, Supra, 911) at the time.

To answer OP: E46 M3. Nothing is replacing my E36 M3 except either a E46 or in the chance I wreck mine, a E30 shell and I swap everything over. They're that good.

S50 Euro M3's are on par with the S54 in terms of accel.

With the way a true S50 performs, would glady have accepted it in the E46.

BMW wouldn't have sold as many E36 M3s im America if they put that more expensive engine in the E36 and raised prices. Just keep that in mind, they were trying to keep the car close to the original price point of the original E30 M3 ($35,000) 5 years later.

They sold tons of them in America for that reason, the E36 M3 was the cheapest luxury sports car you could buy in the 1990s (compared to $40-50,000 Supras and $60-65,000 911s) in a time when Americans weren't really buying sports cars.

And yeah my point is that the US S50/52 is nowhere nearly as bad as people make it out to be. It's still enough to make the US M3 a 14 second flat 1/4 mile car out the box.
