Any other California bros with modified engines? I want to supercharge my car but I've heard pretty bad stories of people getting pulled over with modified engines. Anyone have any experience with this? Is it worth it to try?
>>
>>14871253

>Installed CAI on my Toyota Camry, Weeks prior to being pulled over on my way to work for going 2 miles over the speed limit.

>Forgot all about the CAI, but consent to a vehicle check, with a "Have at it."

>Looks under the hood and immediately drops it shut again

>Repeats over and over "No this wont due" as he walks towards the nearby construction site.

>Comes back riding and excavator and begins tearing the car back right there on the street.

>People laughing as they film with their phones

bay area fag reporting in, far as I know those type of pullovers only happen frequently down in socal.

I almost never hear about cops pulling guys over engine inspections up here.

what car? just get a carb legal kit
>>
>>14871380

>>
>>14871387
It's a 2012 Civic Si, no carb legal kits for it. However the kit I'm looking at would bring me up to about 300whp. Thinking this might be worth the risk of having to pay a $400 ticket, reverting it back to stock, and passing it with a smog referee.
>>
>>14871401
Then your only hope is to buy a sleeper that cops wont bat an eye at.

It's actually kind of scary how educated they are on what engines/mods aren't stock.
>>
>>14871253
Yet another reason I will never live in California. Fucking communist bastards.
>>
>>14871380
No they don't. What makes you assume we have that shit here? I've had many modified cars and never an issue
>>
>>14871380
BayAreafag here too.
Those pullovers only happen if youre doing something stupid, are a Mexican/filipino in a clapped out ricebox or are driving to Hot Import Nights.
Then again ive only ever seen that shit done on 4banger Civics, 240sx, etc.
Never any v6/i6/v8.

>>
>>14871672
Seriously it's such bullshit. Legally they can check under your hood for any reason and you have to comply. I've heard of people being pulled over for speeding and then were asked to pop open their hood for an inspection.
>>
>>14871680
Thank God I don't live there
Over here in AZ Noone gives a shit and smog is determined by the city so I can run no cats and dump pure gasoline into the air and its perfectly legal
>>
Do they really do that? I thought modifications were legal unless you couldn't pass smog? Or were 'illegal' JDM parts
>>
>>14871253
C10 was failing smog due to a bunch of shit. Smog parts were impossible to get as they were no longer being produced. So I installed a lt 1 from a shitty z28 I purchased for 3 grand.
>>
>>14871380

resident. i've never seen cars pulled over for modifications besides mexicans in 2low2loud civics

if your car is a riced up shitbox and you're driving recklessly. OP probably heard some pretty bad stories because his buddies are a bunch of F&F fuccboi's.

Idk I don't consider myself a ricer. I'd say my car is pretty clean for a civic and most of my mods have been tasteful or for performance.

I don't owe anything. However I like this car and have been building it up for a while. Don't plan on selling it anytime soon. Already have full suspension mods and up to 210whp, just thinking that the supercharger would be something fun to do with it.

civic type r is coming to the states next year though.

>factory turbo
>factory tuned suspension
>better chassis
>better interior
>will hold it's value

why bother fixing up a 4 year old civic?
>>
>>14871908
It's big and is full of electronic bullshitery.

Actually that's probably not too different from a 4 year old one, but it's a decent reason to prefer a 14 year old one.
>>
>>14871908
>why bother
It hasn't been a bother, more of a fun project.
I considered this though, I just don't know if it would be worth the payments and insurance since my current civic is already pretty fun.

Fuck, I wanted to mod the shit out of a Z, but nothing too crazy. Just L28ET swap, and stroke it to a 3.1 if possible.

Only story I've heard is a guy I knew, but he said he had illegal track only parts on a car and they crushed it.

Some coworker has a nephew who had the fastest civic on LA at the time, was in some magazine. He told me thats where the cops actually knew their shit, and why people would drop their cars low as shit. So cops couldn't snoop under them
>>
>>14871253
>supercharging a k20

enjoy ur shit mileage and lol no power

turbo it
>>
>>14872023

Get a 1975 or earlier 240z and it's smog exempt. You could literally drop in a v8 and run straight pipes if you wanted to, as long as it isn't earth shatteringly loud.
>>
>>14872041
I'm too purist for that. And not mechanically inclined. If I would V8 swap anything It'd be my S10, but thats another can of worms
>>
>>14872027
It isn't even a k20. I'm sure you're very knowledgeable on this subject huh?
>>
>>14872066

my point was that you could do whatever you want, but I think you got that.

if you're a true purist though, you'd go for dem sidedraft carbs for the awesome sound

Thats the plan if going NA, the bonus is that I wouldn't need all the bullshit emissions shit I would need if it was EFI.
>SU roundtops only possibility
>Triple webbers if I really save up
>Triple Mikumis, never gonna happen
>>
>>14872092
Correct, and you're right that you can get more power with a turbo. However a lot of people go the supercharge route for the low end torque and reliability. Supercharger can go anywhere from 270whp-400whp.
>>
>>14872126
whats your mechanical experience like? if i were you i would swap a better head first, and maybe get some studs, better headgaskets and piston rings before forced injection, maybe injectors, idk how much fuel the stock ones can delive

superchargers are not that reliable 2bh, it will beat your main bearings up

ive seen k series with proper tunes make 500 on the stock rotating assembly, bretty cool engines
>>
>>14872156
>superchargers are not that reliable 2bh, it will beat your main bearings up
not on properly engineered setups
>>
>>14872172
Yeah there are tons of people on Si forums that claim to have run superchargers for tens of thousands of miles without any problems.
>>14872156
I wouldn't say I'm great but I'm okay at wrenching. I've always done the work on my cars myself, and if I ever run into any problems I have a friend that used to be a mechanic for BMW. K24 engines are extremely durable. I've never heard of anyone needing to use a better headgasket or rings.
>>
>>14872172
the load on the crank is still there familia

if you want cheap forced induction go with a nitrous kit, its cheaper and easier to install and can make more than enough power to blow your engine lol
>>
>>14872206
Wear on the crank would be minimal. I think you're forgetting what exactly a crankshaft is designed to endure for hundreds of thousand of miles. Now drastically raising the red line would be a different story.
>>
>>14872206
you are retarded

not only is it going to fuck your bearings at high boost levels but it will drain power aswell kek

>supercharging
>>
>>14872362
>never mind the tons of power it adds, check out my memes
>>
>>14872390
>nevermind the fact that a turbo will make more power at similar boost levels

Buy an LT1 Corvette and get the AFR 195cc Eliminator aluminum heads. They're CARB legal with an EO #.

Also get a better cam. They're -technically- illegal BUT they're not visible so you'll still pass the visual inspection. And as long as it's not too aggressive it should pass the sniffer test too. The very maximum should be .224 @ .050 and 114 LSA but that's pushing it. Lobe overlap will affect smog more than the valve lift.
>>
>>14872404
>implying you can't crank the boost up and make whatever power you want
>>
>>14872463

>if it were this easy
>>
>>14872463
you are one dumb fucking fag

you can "crank up the boost" on a turbo aswell and still make more power

now explain me, how do you "crank up th boost" on a roots and a twin screw supercharger
>>
>>14872524
Smaller pulley.
>>
>>14872524
by changing crank and drive pulleys, you "dumb fucking fag"
>>
>>14872443
Oh and .581 lift. Forgot to add that to the max cam specs.
>>
>>14872570
>>14872564

you can on turbos with a boost controller or by playing with ur bov

kek, superchargers really are garbage

>>
>>14874684
>i am going to spam a wall of text because i am a dumb nigger

kek

getting a stiffer spring in both the bov and the wastegate increases the boost pressure and reduces lag

http://www.superstreetonline.com/how-to/engine/turp-0501-understanding-external-wastegate-basics/
>If more boost is desired a stiffer spring must be installed in the wastegate.

keep sperging though, nothing better than butthurt supercharger plebs
>>
>>14875881
you don't use a bov to regulate boost you moron, you use a boost pressure regulator.
>>
>>14871253
Only been pulled for exhaust in nor cal. Smog is all you have to worry about, had to get a few compliance stickers for my shorty headers and cai to pass my last check. Fuckers bust out the magnifying glass if they see anything aftermarket.
