How important is proper brand name oil usage?
I bought a vw with a 1.9tdi engine.
About to do my third oil change on it (every 6000km) and I use loose oil sold by the liter at a local gas station. It's 15w40, apparently organic.
Thing is I like to take proper care of my car, but it's incredibly expensive to get proper oil (15 bucks a liter for brand name) when compared to the 6 of the loose oil.
Shouldn't you at least be using diesel oil? Rosella T is like $3/L in America or even less if you buy in bulk

Not American
once I took all the emission stuff off my tdi I used the cheaper stuff, which happened to be rotella, but I'd still at least use diesel specific oil.

It is for diesel. It's what they sell to taxicab drivers here for them turbocharged Econoboxes.

>organic motor oil
>putting dinosaur juice in a turbo diesel
Ok, so I'm getting a better oil. What if I don't find diesel specific? Should I just find one with the same specs 505.01?

Bump
Also, the car has 150000 km, I don't know what oil the previous owner used, and I did my last two changes with mineral. Changing to synthetic now... Would that produce leaks?

It could but if it starts acting weird throw some Lucas in there to gum it up.
fuck it. I'm sticking with the mineral.
Ask google the oil you need to use and stick with that. The 1.8t requires 0w40 or 5w40. Can't say for the tdi
