Hi /o/, i don't know anything about cars, so im hoping you guys can help.
My grandmother had low oil light on her dash, so she put a quart in. I read the bottle and it said SAE 10w40, but her oil cap says SAE 5w30.
Will this be a problem? Will her engine fuck up?

Nah its fine. If you had 4 quarts of 5w30 and a quart of higher viscosity, it'd blend and not be a big deal.
Pull the drain plug as soon as you can. The higher winter rating will cause your bearings to explode in warm weather

as long as they are both the same type of oil, then you will be fine until the next oil change.
By type I mean synthetic or old-school dino oil.
If your not sure, it isn't the end of the world, but I would probably do an oil flush just to be safe if you don't know what you put in.

Thanks anons, I know they were both synthetic so I guess we're good then.
My car asks for 5w20 and I replaced it with 10w40 and it hasn't blown up yet so it's fine
It's fine
My truck calls for 5w-30 and I use Rotella 15w-40

It's not an instantaneous thing.
If it's an older car, that might honestly be a good thing for it. Or at least, it won't kill it.

It's a 2001 Chevrolet lumina. What do the oil names even mean?

wtf are you talking about?
My dad put heavier 10W-40 in our Honda in a bid to reduce oil burn. No problems for 50k miles. I went back to 5W-30 after taking ownership.
Motors aren't as sensitive to weight requirements when using Synthetic oil when compared to the old oil. It's pretty amazing just how far Synthetic oil has gotten in the past few years.
