How do I learn as much as you guys about cars?
I'm super new to this board in particular (4 weeks ish) and have mostly lurked. I have a car that's been fucking up and have gotten really into working on it but I just don't know a fucking thing about cars.
Is there any suggested reading materials I should look into? Magazines, books?

Pls no bully

Just visit the forum section for your particular model. There's forums for literally all cars. Also jewtube videos of people fixing their car step by step is helpful.

>>14797667
Don't you dare give that furshit more views
>>
>step 1 : watch Top Gear
>step 2 : buy some rusty shitbox for under a grand
>step 3 : open it, "fix it", try to undo the damage you just caused
>step 4 : learn from y our failure
>>
>>14797665
I spent 12 years fixing everything that went wrong with my own cars. Also spent thousands of hours on forums when people actually used them.

>>14797679
Forums are dead m8. Everybody is on facebook or reddit now.

Buy a service manual for your car
Before you do any work, Google the job you are about to do. It will cut down on the suprise factor, and you'll know what tools and what sizes you are going to need.
Look online for model specific forums for your car. Most of these are pretty cringe worthy, but that shouldn't be a problem if you've hung around this shithole.

Buy an old MGB or midget. Any old British sports car will break down often enough that within a few years you'll learn to do everything on it

And it will be fun enough to drive that you'll actually do the fixing

>as you guys
>/o/

KEK!
>>
>watch initial D
>regurgitate events on /o/ as if they are facts
>never learn to drive

Want to learn how to fix a car yourself?

Buy the Hayne's or Chilton repair for your car!

Repair manuals will tell you how to do the job and what you need to get it done

Start with simple things like how to change the air filter or tires, or maybe changing your oil

If you are still interested, keep exploring!

>>14797665
how I do:
>1) be poorfag needing transport
>2) buy sub $1k shitbox
>3) watch youtube videos and read repair manuals
>4) ?????
>5) profit!

>>14797665
Basically lurk moar, join forums about your vehicle, read the threads, especially the build threads, decide on some easy and commonly recommended modifications (or repairs to get your shit box into shape), go to town on it, fuck something up, figure it out and unfuck it, shitpost on /o about any car that's not your own.

Once you understand your car you have a decent basis for understanding how a car works, the rest is just fine tuning your knowledge by further research, trial and error.

REV UP YOUR ENGINES !!!
>>
>>14797665
>Start reading max power at 12 years old
>Read all the old engine books in the school library
>Buy more books about cars and engines
>Start working on own cars
>Get Engineering degree
>Get technician job at OEM
>Get promoted to Engineer at OEM

I'm still learning.
I'm pretty good with engines, but suspension, aero and design (I.e. CAD) are a bit outside of my expertise.

Unless you want an automotive career, just watch youtube videos.
>>
If you REALLY want to learn abouy cars, and I mean really know your shit and not just how to change the oil, then I suggest you find a book series aimed at car mechanic students. As a finfag I bought the series used in my country called Auto ja kuljetusalan perusoppi (just in case any finfags are lurking here).

So you read all that stuff and now you have a basic idea how the stuff in the car works. You certainly won't understand everything because it's impossible to learn that stuff from just books, but I think it helps greatly have some sort of picture about what kind of compoments car has and how they work. After you get your basics down, then you buy Haynes / Chilton / whatever manual for your car and start doing maintenance. Also watching youtube videos is great help, agian because seeing something done is much better way to learn than to read about it. Here's a list of channels I've bookmarked that rela to cars / motorcycles / technology:

Also I would like to add that you should be able to find those books at your local library, or if you buy them try to find used because as we all know any book related to education costs shitloads.
