So I'm a sucker for 1980's jap cars (even though I never owned one, I just like them lines) and there's a 1985 Civic selling for US$900, with 100km in it ("grandma car"). Judging by the photos, it looks in mint condition.

Are there any common issues with the engine? I plan to use it as a daily driver. I am kinda handy with a wrench, but I don't know much about common problems with jap cars that are that old

thanks

engines are fine, check for rust
>>
get it and swap a b18c or a k24block/k20head

make sure there is no rust

The carb has the biggest spaghetti mess of vacuum lines I've ever seen but it's not hard to do a devac

The corolla was better though

Swaps are pretty difficult on pre EF chassis. The motor mounts are way different.

why is it better?

DUDE DAGUMI LMAO

Having owned both. The Toyota is just easier. Engine swaps are easier. Maintenance is easier. If you leave it stock, the Toyota carb is easier.
Even the interior is nicer and more comfortable.
But then I'm sure (since this is /o/) everyone will disagree with me.

They don't hold a tune after a devac for shit. They need entirely rejetted.

The only problem I have had with it has been the choke that occasionally gets stuck on.

Distributor bushings go out pretty frequently on 1980's vintage hondas. If it starts misfiring at higher RPM and the tach starts jumping all over the place, that's your problem.

They burn oil like mad.

Cam and crankshaft oil seals both always leak.

Valves tend to go after 100k miles or so, because they were solid-lifter engines and no American has bothered to adjust a valve since 1970.

Massive tangles of vacuum lines but don't worry about it because nothing ever goes wrong with them and the carburetors are bulletproof.

Also, be prepared for Geo Metro levels of horsepower.
