Hello, I'm 18, and my dad is going to buy me a car soon.

How do i convince him to buy me a manual car?

Are there any arguments i can use to prove why i should get a manual instead of an automatic?

Or is manual driving just a meme that I've fallen for?
Please help. Thanks mates.
>>
lmao
Go buy your own car you little shit.
Also, if these are the questions you're asking a board full of "enthusiasts", then the answer you receive won't even matter.
Just take what you're given, spoiled cunt.
>>
>>14704290
Dad I want a manual, if that doent work then:

higher resale, better fuel econ(if you dont drive mad), cheaper maintenance if something pops and in some cases the manuals are more reliable, (ford)
>>
>>14704290
Driving a manual nowadays is like watching ads on TV. You can do it, but you're wasting your time
>>
>>14704290
>posting shooped version
>>
>>14704290
suck his dick and ask for a V8 mustang
>>
The arguments that can work
>Better fuel economy
>More reliable
Also if your dad is cool you can try the "driving experience" "faster understanding of car physics" and MAYBE "more fun" but 90% of parents hear "more dangerous" if you describe anything as fun.
>>
>>14704316
THIS
manual it's just a meme, if it's your first car, better have an automatic and learn how to move with traffic, park, calculate size, distance and speed ... all the essential driving habbits that you will be distracted while fighting against clutch, box and STALLING.
First become a decent driver and then you could learn to be a capable manual car operator.
>>
>>14704312
>cheaper maintenance if something pops and in some cases the manuals are more reliable

This is probably the best reason

In an auto if your tranny gets messed up, prepare to be buttfucked by the shops
>>
>>14704376
He's 18 not 15.
>>
"I dont wanna have to go through the embarrassment of learning when im older and id rather do it now."
>>
>>14704290
tell him it forces you to pay attention to driving, and with a shifter in one hand and steering wheel in the other you wont be able to text and drive.
>>
>>14704372
> "faster understanding of car physics"
Manual: wasting time, effort and concentration downshiting -> crash or stalled car
Auto: just brake -> car stopped and ready to go
>>
>>14704387

Plus your mom can drive it too
>>
>>14704379
>dissasembly transmission to do a clutch change every 3 years
>replacing fluid every 3 years, never need to do a box repair until 30-40 years

yeah, sure, more reliable and cheaper

>>14704376
I learned how to drive manual when I was literally 12, how fucking inept are you that driving a manual is hard?
>>
>>14704376
Why do people treat manual like you're driving a spaceship? Once you get the hang of it, the type of transmission becomes inconsequential to your actual skill as a driver.
>>
>>14704290
>Or is manual driving just a meme that I've fallen for?
It really just depends on the vehicle. If your only specification is that it must have a manual, your father should assume that you are ignorant to anything automotive related, and probably leave you out of the whole decision process. Maybe let you chime in on a color preference, but anything else he should just treat you like a clueless teen girl, and get you whatever his testosterone filled father body deems fit for his little princess.
>>
>>14704401
>dissasembly transmission to do a clutch change every 3 years
Still on my original clutch 7 years and 154k miles later. Only a literal retard would be needing to replace their clutch every 3 years.
>>
>>14704290
Manual driving isn't a meme, it's fun, plain and simple. With everything but the latest in performance vehicles, a manual is going to have an edge due to weight savings, but that's still secondary to the enjoyment you can pull out of it.

In my opinion, the best argument that you can give a parent for having a manual is that if you're out drinking with friends, and you need to drive your buddies stick-shift back, at least you can do it without relying on your drunk amigo.
>>

Americans get overwhelmed pretty easily, apparently.
No matter, many companies are hard at work developing self driving cars these days

>>

>>

This, just do the no-throttle launch a few times and you'll pretty much never stall.
>>
>>14704312
>higher resale
Manual cars have lower resale in North America because nobody wants them.

>better fuel econ
Not true for almost any car made in the past 5 years.
>>
>>14704430
I've known a lot of people that drive manual, and have multiple friends that one currently. Then again I don't live in an overcongested clusterfuck like L.A. or N.Y. so driving a manual isn't "chore" like some of those people see it.

Also, my mom, all of my aunts, multiple ex's and my current gf know how to drive manual too. So it's not like it's just men drive manual here.
>>
>>14704441
A teen owning a 2011 or newer? Why bother? Go for the decade old sports car any day over the five year old econo-box.

OP here, i think ill be getting a dodge challenger.

People who learn to drive on automatics can't drive stick-shift but people who learn on stick-shifts can drive automatics without any problems so get a stick shift and be a master driver :D.

Is it new or used? The problem with getting a used manual in the US is most people are retarded and can't drive manual to save their life, so you don't know when your buying it if it was treated properly or thrashed on by a monkey for 100k. If your getting it new then congrats on wasting a free new car that your dad is getting you on a Challenger.
>>
Welp, the tread started out ok, then OP turned out to be a faggot

Lol this thread is just people being salty at OP because he is probably getting a better car then they ever owned when he is 18. Like they can't understand we live in a entitlement society.

OP, tell him it is safer, because it is.

When you are more engaged in driving, the more attention you pay to the world around you. I'm a much more aware driver in an MT than an auto.
>>
>>14704290
If you have to shift gears, you can't be distracted, like texting and driving.
>>
>>14704547

>thinking current automatics have anything more over standards except more gear ratio's and stop/start tech.
The differences are so fucking marginal you'd be retarded to buy most automatics over a standard just for fuel economy.

OP quit being a shit, my parents are rich as fuq and I was lucky to get to borrow one of their cars once a week, maybe. Ask your dad to buy you a POS foxbody and fix that up so that by the time it's running you won't be totally worthless

No
There's no benefit for driving a manual since 1990. Automatic transmissions nowadays shift faster, better, are more reliable, and fuel efficient. You'll lose because the only reason you have is that you want one. That said, manuals are way more fun than the current range of automatic transmissions unless its a DCT but your dad isn't gonna buy your broke ass a DCT
>>
Just tell him what car you want?

It's you will be driving it, it will be your car, so it better be something you fucking like.

Actually a lot of manuéls go for more money on the used market. Assuming you are talking about somewhat sporty cars. Look at E36 and E46 M3's, the manual trans cars command quite a bit more than autos.

On old BMWs and pretty much on any older sporty vehicle, they demand a premium since you won't have to go and do a swap for what was then the faster transmission.

You seriously have never shopped for an 80's 90's car before.
