Anyone else hate this trend of massive displays instead of physical buttons/knobs inside of vehicles?

I think Porsche found the best compromise: mechanical dials with just one dial off the the side replaced with an LCD screen.

no

get with the times luddite

Cost less than having buttons and when screens break you can charge a ton for replacing them.

I kind of dislike the whole trend of LCDs and touch instead of nice instruments and physical buttons. It just doesn't look classy, even if they try to mimic chrome rings and other stuff, it's cheap, just look at the LCD in the LaFerrari, it's the cheapest crap, visible clouding, no real black, ...
>>
>>14699117
to look at and take photos of, sure.
to use, no.
>>
>>14699245
I'm not him, but I gotta say, it's not like I don't have to look at the physical buttons, too - so why *not* make it a touch panel?
>>
Why haven't they made touch panels with tactile response yet? I remember years ago Nokia claimed they were developing displays that you could FEEL the give of the virtual button as you pushed it.
Do that on a display that's visually unaffected by sunlight (i.e. Kindle-ish sort of thing) and you have the versatility of a touch screen display without any of the drawbacks.
>>
>>14699245
nobody needs an individual fader dial every time they drive
touchscreens allow you hide extraneous functions, imagine trying to operate the kind of functionality people expect of cars today with 'buttons and dial'
>inb4 cars shouldn't have all that shit, I own a smartphone, boomers meme etc
Removing features doesn't sell cars
>>
>>14699464
yeah you wouldn't want those buttons and dials lowering your power/weight ratio
>>
>>14698697
Not bad, here's mine.
>>
>>14698697
For this it doesn't really matter if it's analog or digital since you're not interacting with it. Personally, I prefer a good digital one (like the one found in the current IS350 F-Sport) to an analog one because it can change what information is important for the conditions (e.g. RPM is more prominent in sport mode, while speedometer is more prominent in normal driving)
>>
>>14698020
Massive display is great for stuff like navigation. But I definitely want to be able to turn down the heater or change to next music track without taking my eyes off the road.

The main problem with touchscreen dash units is that auto industry cannot into ergonomic and responsive GUIs. If you need to claw at the screen for 10 seconds to get to the volume control (hello Cadillac!), that system goes into the trash.
>>
>>14698020

I like buttons, knobs, gauges, switches, and lights.

I would have optioned more of them onto my car if it were possible.

Although pretty crude, that doesn't look unattractive. And that is close to 10 years old design. Imagine how dated and unattractive the current touchscreen operated UIs will look in 8 years. Cars are becoming more disposable than ever and fail to serve their main function as means of transportation sooner than ever before because of this.
>>
>>14699464
>touchscreens allow you hide extraneous functions
That's the thing.

If the function is something that you're expected to access while driving (music, air con, some navigation settings, driving modes, etc), then it should have properly designed physical buttons and dials to minimize distraction while driving.

If the function is something you only need to change while the car is stopped, then go ahead, hide it behind the touchscreen.
>>
The righteous way forward is to have physical buttons that change their interface dependent on context. WE NEED SCREENS ON BUTTONS
>>
>>14699794
then you'd still have to occasionally look at them to see in what state the buttons are.
>>
>>14699794
This has existed for computers for years now and nobody gives a shit.

>>14699817
What we need are dashboards that morph into different layouts dependent on context.

I wasn't aware it was a trend. I think the latest Audi TT has the best interior I've ever seen. Fully digital gauge panel but no screens on the center area.

Can't wait for all that to stop getting updates in a couple of years and become completely incompatible with new technologies and standards.

Although I do like how the passenger doesn't get anything, more cars should do that.

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize you don't have a smartphone with a capacitive touchscreen that was heavily influenced by the iPhone, which was the first successful smartphone for the masses.
>>
>>14702630
Have you actually been in it? It looks good in pictures/videos, but when you sit in it, it's literally almost all hard plastics. Also the armrest and door handles creak when you sit down and open the door...that really shouldn't be happening in a "premium" car in 2016.
>>
>>14704060
I have. And I have only because until very recently there was no fucking choice of anything else you retard.
