1. weight reduction ( seats, steering whell, ect)
2. anti roll bars
3. Suspension
4. brakes
5. Rims and tires
6. Clutch
7 Engine rebuild or engine swap

Then go free track day
>>
>>14691521
You don't start with the mods. First you do the maintenance and make sure everything you aren't replacing is working.

and for your first project, with little mech knowledge, do you go and buy one of the worst engine bays to work in.

This can only end in drama.
>>
>>14696338
less power, worse platform for boosting
>>
>>14696343
Beams wasn't meant for boost
>>
>>14696347
exactly, what's the point then?
if you want a naturally aspirated engine, may as well go with a bigger V6 for more torque
>>
You buy a car but don't know what to do? Why even buy it

>>14696339
Group projects are fucking hilarious
Friendships bound to be broken when one person wants to keep it more than the others etc
>>
Your wheels need air.
>>
>>14696349
You're missing the point by light-years. But ok
>>
>>14696308
Its just common fade, a good polish will bring it back ez.

>>14696338
Less power, less modability, different mounts to 3sgte.

>>14691521
Does it run? That's step 1.
Get oil, air, fuel, brake service change all filters, change all fluids

New sparkplugs and sparkplug leads

Get it polished to remove all the fade.

If its an early model: remove sump and add baffles or buy a baffled sump (from later gen 3sgte engines)

Strip interior add cage, harnesses and bucket seats.

Go have fun for a bit do a few events.

Other things to think about would be getting a spare set of wheels and fitting some soft tires for events without destroying them on the road.

If its an early gen try find a later gen engine. Better turbo. Better injectors. I thing early gens make 220 with boost controller while late gens make up to 280. Boost controller is ezpz install.
>>
>>14696384
if you're gonna do a beams swap, might as well put in a little more effort to do a v6 swap.
>>
>>14696384
Why suggest a beams engine that makes less HP an tq than an early gen turbo motor and would require engineering new engine mounts unless you rebuild the beams using the original block with beams head/internals (if that's even possible)

I agree with the other anon, if you're going to the lengths required to fit a beams motor just find a V6.
>>
>>14696402
>>14696392
>car currently equipped with 3S-based motor
>anons suggest change to motor that won't fit gearbox, engine mounts, etc
>anons think level of difficulty is similar

ok
k
>>
>>14696447
> BEAMS engine swaps are easy
some of the common V6 swaps can use the same tranny actually
>>
>>14696447
BEAMS HAS DIFFERENT ENGINE MOUNTS TO ALL OTHER GENS OF 3SGTE.

what part of that is not getting through your thick skull.

Also the Camry v6 has widely available adaptor plates for the e156 gearbox and a truckload more documentation on how to swap than the beams because nobody is dumb enough to fit a beams instead of a late gen 3sgte or v6
>>
>>14696303
And put a fuel cell in the passenger footwell
>>
>>14696447
What you're not understanding is that to swap a BEAMS 3S-GE into an SW20 is very nearly as difficult as getting a 3VZ-FE or a 2GR-FE in there. If you're going to the effort of putting a BEAMS in there then you may as well go the whole hog for *not a heck of a lot* much more effort and make more power and in a nicer power band than a peaky I4 that makes 220hp at best.
>>
>>14697480
not to mention, those V6s are very good for supercharging or turbocharging

It's literally a direct swap, some late gen MR2's in japan came with them from the factory.
It also makes the same power as the gen 2 3sgte..it's actually pretty impressive

>>
>>14691521
First thing you should do is clean it top to bottom and see if the dirt is hiding anything else that you'll need to put money aside for first. But Other than that, and the obvious like getting it running, you can't go wrong with some new wheels, rubber, suspension, and forced induction upgrades

I bough an MR2 last summer and had a list of basic things/mods I wanted to get done, like replacing all the suspension bushings with prothane bushings, replacing all the spark plug wires and vacuum lines, putting on braided brake lines, etc.

Two days after I bought the car it shit its water pump seal out its ass on the highway, and ever since then I've had my hands full just trying to keep the thing running. Most of the time and money I had set aside for "mods" has just gone into repairs and maintenance instead, and any plans that I for the car have gone out the window for the short term.

Forget modding it for now and focus on "refreshing" the car. Replace worn out shit before it fails and have money set aside to replace things when they inevitably shit the bed.

The car will give you plenty of opportunities to get your hands dirty and work on it.
>>
>>14700515
What problems have you had besides the waterpump?
>>
>>14691521
Swap in a 2GR-FE V6. It'll end up being lighter than an MR2 Turbo, making more power, and better handling.

So far I've replaced:
>Water pump
>Timing belt
>Alternator
>voltage regulator
>battery
>Speedometer cable (twice)
>distributer seals
>heater core coolant hard lines
>strut rod/trailing arm (snapped in half randomly, pic related)
>Oil filter adapter plate seals
>V-belt and idler pulley
>Shift linkage bushings
>various switches, fuses, and relays

The only really serious things (i.e. Left me unable to drive) were the water pump, strut rod, and alternator though. The rest of the issues have been relatively minor annoyances like different fluid leaks and squeaks.

This is an '86 AW11 though, so it's a bit older. But an SW20 that's been sitting outside for 4 years is bound to give you issues as well, I even if it's newer.
