If you were in Europe I'd tell you to go look at a Suzuki Swift Sport and a Peugeot 208 gti by Peugeot Sport, as both of them are very well regarded by the press. But you aren't so I won't.

The Sonic RS gets the 1.4L turbo. The manual transmission has shorter gear ratios, the automatic has a different final drive. They get the sport suspension, a flat bottom steering wheel (same one you'll find on a Camaro ZL1), seats with stiffer bolsters with RS-specific stitching, RS-specific 17" wheels, and rear disc brakes.

The only reason it didn't get an SS badge is because it didn't get an engine upgrade. That may change soon since GM got the new 1.6L Turbo federalized recently (200 HP. Only used in the US market Buick Cascada at the moment)

I like the Sonic but the RS model is too expensive for what it is. For the price, a Fiesta ST or a Fiat 500 Abarth is like 2 or 3 grand more.

The Gold spot in the Sonic range in the mid-range LT model with the 6 speed manual. You get the same turbo engine, the same transmissions with longer gears (which oddly have the same acceleration). The part numbers for the suspension and steering wheel are widely known and ZZPerformance offers a rear disc conversion kit. Do all that and it still ends up cheaper than an RS for the same basic thing.

The RS is pointless in my book. There is an anon or tripfag (can't remember) here who has a Sonic RS though and loves it.

Veloster Turbo is a pretty nice car, and would be the most bang for your buck out of all of them.

Sonic is American trash.
Cruze is American trash.
Fiesta is American trash.
Focus is American trash.
Mini is German trash.

Mazda is cool but don't feel obligated to buy a used piece of shit Mazdaspeed 3 since they're not even making one currently.

KIA is cool but the Forte is just boring as fuck yo look at and kind of looks poverty-tier boring to me.

Only other thing you can do is wait for the Civic Si hatch.

There's also the power steering programming, the RS is stiffer and offers less help, you can get it reflashed. The Sonic isn't bad with the trifecta tune, makes a massive difference. It's 44 extra hp at the wheels, which is huge when that's a third of the stock output.
