Why is it that every car built after 1980, even if it's subtle, have an inclined beltline? Is it an engineering thing, or does everyone but me think it looks better?
>>
IDK, why do all new cars have a 1" flat part around the wheelwell radius
>>
>>14676231
>>14676237
Probably related to safety standards.
>>
I guess that's just a thing that exists, huh. Never even really noticed.
>>
>>14676231
In a traditional 3-box design, a higher trunk lid lessens the slope the the rear window making it more aerodynamic. Aerodynamics = fuel economy. You can thank CAFE.

and what's with all the shit boxes having diablo windows
its ether visibility or aero but the question never comes up
>>
Fuck, OP, you're right. Even minivans have it.
>>
Probably visibility. Lets the mirrors be positioned a bit lower.
Aero is probably a factor too.
>>
>>14676237
it gives the car a clean/neat/finished look. Without it cars look messy and cluttered.
>>
>>14676237
that's how we transitioned from 90s blob into 00s econobox
>>
>tfw don't
>>
>>14676237
It's called clipping and happens when the lines of the body terminate outside the vehicle.
>>
>>14676231
Aerodynamics and rollover protection. Higher trunks can make the overall car's structure stronger.

>>14676237
I once knew the reason for this but I forgot. Either way, it looks fucking stupid and I hate it.
>>

The most disgusting thing in the world

>>14679752

He means pic related. What does it have to do with body lines? It appears to have literally nothing to do with the rest of the lines
>>
>>14679770
I know that's what he meant, look at the fender. Same with >>14679757, it extends outside the vehicle.

There was a thread about this once. Not sure if I can find it in the archive, but I'll check.
>>
>>14679790

Do you mean it extends past the vehicle on the horizontal axis? I thought you meant vertically as in the body lines ended at a 45* angle or something.

There are plenty of cars with bubble fenders (ie all of 90s Japan) that look 1000000000000000000x better than that faggotry. Whoever decided this was a good idea should be shot in the dick, raped, burned, broken upon the wheel, given the boats, quartered, then hung.
>>
>does everyone but me think it looks better

Bingo. It's all about style.

>>14676242
>Probably related to safety standards.
US doesn't have the relevant standards, and this styling trend began long before the euro crowd adopted ped safety standards.

IDK, why do all new cars have a 1" flat part around the wheelwell radius

This was once something done out of necessity to trim larger cars down just a bit so they would fit on roads and into garages easier, but now it's become a trend that's everywhere. I don't think there are any standards mandating these kind of wheelwells, it's just something they do to make cars look more "contemporary".

The earliest cars I recall seeing with these kind of fenders were in the late 90s with the BMW e39 and Cadillac STS. Their's were MUCH smaller and more subtle though.

Does this count?
>>
>>14676237
It's called clipping /shaving, it actually let's the car be wider.
>>
>>14676237
For sik mawds dawg, are you telling me your 00 shit box isnt widened and slammed
>>
>>14676242
wrong
>>14676259
wrong for the most part

wrong

its a fucking brilliant idea, ur just a moron

its all a numbers game. a thinner sheet of metal with more lines through it can survive the same hit as a flat plain but slightly thicker sheet of metal. it cuts costs while still allowing them to slip by with decent safety ratings. also a totaled out car is more profitable then a repairable car. it all comes down to repairability.

every try doing body work to the ass end of a 2001 impala? good because having 2 fucking body lines within 12 inches of each other makes bodywork a bitch and much longer process. bodymen are more likely to tell a customer they need to buy a fender they can paint and install then to take the time to repair a fender with 2 fucked body lines on it.

there may be other factors and im sure someone will say so, but im willing to bet this is one of the main reasons. look at fords new aluminum beds. no fucking way anyone will be repairing those. you cant clip it because few shops can work with aluminum.
>>
>>14676237
more space efficient.
>>
>>14684292
2 inches off the sides ( being generous here) ..... i highly doubt that makes them any more space efficient.
>>
>>14684336
every little bit helps
