Go take test drives of manual transmission cars at a used car dealership. Bring a female friend along so the salesman won't come along on the test drive.

well, if i buy a shitbox and replace the clutch and bushings, just scared it won't be enough.... i reckon some shitboxes are better than others

Lots of cheap stuff on my CL. 2500 for a cheap manual shitbox is not bad and there is plenty on the used market.

Chevy Aveo
>some of the older models will be in your price range
>super light clutch
>weak enough to teach you to get good at starting
>transmission and clutch feel like moving a bunch of rubber bands
>south korean car with a bowtie you can't get more shitbox than that
The few Hondas and Toyotas I have driven had nice feeling shifters with light clutch pedals.

Wow that toyota is nice. Would buy if I didn't already have a shitbox
>>14674959
>leave grill with salesman
>"do to this what I'm about to do to that clutch"
1992-2000 Civic
Seriously, it's really forgiving and easy to learn on, unless you want to get a V8
get the cheapest car possible.
drive it.
break it.
learn what happened
then dont do it again.

Leaning to drive manual takes about half an hour, are you clinically retarded that you need an extra car for it?

The lower the horsepower, the lighter the clutch (generally), so a heavy clutch in any econobox usually means a clutch cable issue. Most have hydraulic clutches now so it's not a common problem.
Shifter is going to be sloppy and long-throw in almost every inexpensive car you can find. Civics always get praise for their shift feel, though. I had an Integra that had probably the best FWD shifter I've encountered, but the throws are so short and the gates so close that a new driver might have difficulty hitting the right gear.
I personally have thought the shifters on Mazda transmissions are pretty decent, including the ones used in cheap Fords like the Escort and Ranger.
I learned to drive stick on an '85 Audi, I didn't have anything to compare it to at the time but it was pretty nice in retrospect. Drove a 5-speed VW with one that wasn't half bad, once you got over the stiffness.

honestly man just get a 3 year old fiat 500.
they cost 7000, its an easy amount of money to pay off over the course of three years even if you're only making minimum wage. On top of that, they're fun and easy to drive (for a car that size)
There's no point in getting a used car in america these days. That used to be the thing to do a decade ago, but now new cars are cheap enough that taking out a loan isn't debilitating and actually is a sound investment, provided you drive well.

anon im crying
i've been trying for months. and they are scarce as fuck in michigan.
>>$2500
i can dream
1st Gen dodge neon. Buy some Booger Bushings for $20. It has a non hydraulic assist clutch so you can feel what its doing but its also very light. Boogers make even the stock shifter notchy and fun. You're welcome, just saved you at least a grand, maybe two depending on how cheap you get it
>>14674908
>$2500
>shitbox
The american car market is fucked?

2000–2003 Mitsubishi Lancer (non-Evo)
It's affordable, fun to modify and has a manual transmission. If i were to ever buy a FWD car, that would be it.
Check out these Lancer Fix videos, they're informative.
