Its not a god machine, its just a very fun and unique car that can be had under 5 grand, much like the miata. /o/ also loves cars that can handle vs cars with power. The miata and the aw11 are some of the best handling cars you can buy even though they have little power.
The sw20 is a great car but it's considered to be less reliable overall and does not handle quite as well as its older brother. It's also currently much more expensive than the AW11, almost twice as much.
I would love to have an SW20 as I currently have an AW11 that I love. But I picked the AW11 over the SW20 because of a) the price and b) the fact that the AW11 made me giggle like a school girl and the SW20 didn't.

I've owned both.
Stock driving on street it seems they were built for two different reason.
My turbo sw20 loved highway cruising. It IMO had style and was very comfy.
My AW11s were more down to earth, basic, and a bit rough. Still had style in their own way. Still comfy in their own way. But not in the same way. AW11 was pretty much only good in the city as well. Sucked for freeway driving. Even after bringing castor out

OK. Both do very well in both autox and touge.
The AW11 was a little twitchy for me. It took me a long time to get the understeer out of it. I ended up with TRD suspension settings, tokico adjustable shocks and ST springs. Had to set the rear soft and really throw the car into tight corners.
The SW20 did much better at high speed cornering, way greater stability. With my wheel, tire, suspension setup it would NOT kick out the back end unless you tried REALLY hard. Where as the AW would slide around almost on command.

Had a 91 NA and 92 turbo.
The later models didn't handle as well because they changed geometry to be more numb for stability.

The AW11 was the worst handler of the bunch and inherently unstable. Sorry but this meme needs to die. Yeah they have a crisp turn in, which people mistake for good handling, but you can't really push it because of the instability. They have brakes biased for a front engine weight distribution and the motor has it's fuel cut set in the middle of the power band. Toyota really didn't do a good job with them.

To be fair, the US 3SGTE only made 200bhp, the Euro 3SGE was making 173bhp at one point - why not take the 3 more horsepower? With a few other mods like a larger intake plenum, high flow cat, cat-back you could match the US turbo performance but with NA throttle response
