There are people on here right now who
- don't know that you have to let your (turbo) car idle for a minute or two after a long highway ride before shutting off
- use 0w motor oil by default, even for 4 decade old shitboxes
- fill regular tap water into their starter batteries instead of distilled water
- think using the signals when changing lanes is for the weak
- regularly sniff other car's butt because they dare to go only 2mph over the speed limit
- think the speed limit is actually the minimum speed
- don't know which jumper cable to connect and take off first
- think driving autotragic in manual mode counts as actual Manuel
- shit on FWD or RWD while taking the bus

There are people on /o/ right now who

Ok

How fucking poor, lazy, or incompetent are you, OP?

They're illegal in Australia :(

>Buy a car with a real engine and you won't need to cool off a turbo.
>Using the wrong weight oil is cause for a voided warrenty on new vehicles, and yes dealerships have viscosity testers.
> Most non marine battery's are non servicing in the civilized world.
>Using jumper cables on newer cars can actually harm the ecm. And you should disconnect and charge a battery properly if it goes flat.
The others I'm not going to comment on because they are actually annoying
>>14586528
Do you not know what distilled water is?
>>14586215
>don't know that you have to let your (turbo) car idle for a minute or two after a long highway ride before shutting off
It's not the 80s anymore.
>>14587590
>It's not the 80s anymore.
see, this is why there are so many used cars with fucked up turbos around
>>14587400
That's why you connect the negative cable to 'ground', gets juice to the starter while avoiding the ecu.

Please enlighten me, im fairly new to cars, what's different about modern cars that allows the turbo to stay lubricated wbile spinning immediately after shutting off the engine?
A turbo car having to idle after being driven hard was because when the turbo is really hot and the engine shuts off, oil flow stops. The oil would "coke up" the turbo as a reaction to the heat. Modern oil doesn't do this, so turbo timers are a thing of the past, no matter how old your car is.
>>14591162
So you're saying it was because of the oil quality and not a mechanical issue ? Hum intadasting
>>14586215
>- don't know that you have to let your (turbo) car idle for a minute or two after a long highway ride before shutting off
It's much more useful to take the last mile or two home slowly. It's much easier (and more healthy) than having the car sitting at idle.
>- use 0w motor oil by default, even for 4 decade old shitboxes
Use what the manual says, idiot.
>- fill regular tap water into their starter batteries instead of distilled water
Or buy a decent battery and not worry about this shit.
I'm not even gonna comment on the rest.
>>14591112
Most Turbos are watercooled no oil cooled now adays

what's so bad about 0w oil
it decreases start up wear in any car by getting thinner oil quicker into the top-end
>>14586215
I would love to see how well your scion starts with 10W or 15W oils when the temperature goes to -30F.
Previously I used 5W oils, but current car requires 0W oil by default and I'm not that poor to use lower grade oils to save a few bucks.
>>14592096
>>14592143
not getting the point of OP.
after choosing what your owner handbook says, you also have to take the age and state of your engine into consideration.
many people just fill in 0w without thinking.
filling 0w in a totally falling apart 30 years old engine will probably just drip straight out through tons of seals.
>>14586215
Turbo cars don't need idling after a long and spirited drive with high oil temps(which calm highwayuse certainly isn't), they just require some calm driving afterwards to gradually decrease oil temps.
All other points are mostly valid though.
>>14592397
This.
Calm driving is fine, too
>>14590596
>juice
wrong.
>>14591224
They still need oil for lubrication, thumb dick.
>>14592607
I thought you were supposed to connect first to a grounded part of the engine (not the negative battery terminal) and then connect the positive lead when jumpstarting? Am I incorrect?
>>14592397
In the early days of turbo cars 80 and early 90s it was pretty much mandatory to let the turbo down before shutting the engine off. This was because back then most turbos were oil cooled only and had a higher operating temperatures, also the oils back then were not as good and had lower thermal resistance. If you didn't let your turbo cool down consistently you were going to start coking up the bearings in the turbo. Modern turbos have a much lower operating temperature due to being both water and oiled cooled. The modern oils also have a much higher thermal resistance. This means it's much harder to coke the bearings in a turbo so long as your not driving like you stole it then parking it.
>>14592669
You are correct, you just don't understand why. The reason you connect the ground cable last (and away from the battery negative post) is to reduce the chance of igniting hydrogen gas from the battery. Electrically, it's no different. Doesn't do anything for the PCM, it's just about not making the battery explode.
>>14586227

I am an electrical engineer, I know why you don't connect to the post. I wasn't the PCM guy, just curious about the accepted practice.
>>14593449
Mea culpa.
1. Connect both positives together.
2. Connect negative lead to negative post of good battery.
3. Connect other end of the negative lead to a good ground away from the battery on the car with the dead battery.
