Does a car actually lose power when there are holes in the manifold/exhaust pipes somewhere?

I heard that the pressure is kind of important for some reason
>>
>>14568317
Nice hoerscock
>>
>>14568317
>backpressure
>important
Only if you turbo.
>>
>>14568333
Ah, didn't know that. Thanks.
>>
>>14568317
Exhausts actually pull the fumes from the engine. This is called scavenging, holes in the exhaust will affect this and will cause emissions problems, especially if the leak is before a lambda sensor.
>>
>>14568350
i've seen bmw autotragics bog down and not want to shift b/c of this, especially holes before the cat.

It may also kill the idle control motor, but that's conjecture.
>>
>>14568333
Except it's the exact opposite.

this faggot actually thinks you can run a boosted engine without backpressure.

Enjoy destroying your engine without the exhaust.

The purpose of an exhaust is to expel exhaust gasses safely, clean exhaust gasses, and reduce noise. Think about that.
>>

I'm still baffled how incredibly silent modern cars became.

Especially business class 4cylinder ones.
and I'm not even talking about hybrids.
>>
>>14568555

this

turbos don't need back pressure.
>>
>>14568443
>autotragics

But what does it have to do with the transmission?

Technically you're both not wrong, you just want backpressure before the turbo and no backpressure after.
>>
>>14569894
Shitposting aside, the fact that performance cars need to use all sorts of sound piping/fake audio trickery should tell you how much quieter cars are now

I miss audible exhaust notes even on boring cars, it didn't have to be exciting, it just let you know the damn thing was on and running right.
>>
>>14568592
Exhaust is literally the waste formed from the combustion process. How exactly would increasing the potential flow of exhaust harm an engine? There's no reason a higher flowing or complete lack of exhaust system aft the upstream oxygen sensors should reduce the performance or reliability of any engine.

i've been asking myself the same question for awhile, and since this thread once again failed to provide an accurate answer i googled it.

Why would switching to aftermarket exhaust system improve horsepower?
>>
>>14571746
Because it doesn't
>>
>>14571746
The stock one can be less than ideal for your purposes. Most stock exhaust manifolds a shit, headers are good. X pipes or h pipes are nice for dual-bank engines, and so on.

This is especially true with older cars / motorbikes:

If the exhaust is not large enough or is designed with bottlenecks, then exhaust gasses can remain in the engine's cylinders, making future combustion less efficient, getting you less power.

don't know about 4-strokes but a lot of 2-stroke motors need the backpressure just before compression starts to enable scavenging
>>
>>14571793
I had a 1990 Integra ls with street headers, cold air intake, and straight pipe welded to replace my rusted out resonator pipe. Later, I purchased a Greddy cat back system, and immediately changed back because way more torque was available in the former set up.
I'm a believer in backpressure.

This is an old wives tale. Valves burn from improper sealing.
