Nub here. Why, out of all the V configurations, is the V8 the one people pay the most attention to, and/or is seemingly the most desirable?

Yet people derail V6s and worship V8s? Why? I seriously don't know. Why not covet V10s or V12s?

V10's and v12's aren't nearly as common as a v8, and v6 sounds like shit

1. V8s sound awesome
2. V8s work well from a mechanical/engineering standpoint

What cars even have these configurations?

>Yet people derail V6s and worship V8s? Why?
V8s generally sound better, are more associated with performance, and are considered more of a status symbol. However, that old 20th Century way of thinking. 6cyl engines are proving to be the choice configuration in recent years.

Not nearly as talked about as much as V8s.

V4s are awesome. Honda used them in bikes Aprillia is currently using one in their super sport and Lancia used it in the fulvia.

I really wish more cars had them, it's such a cool sound.

Yeah v4's sound way better than i4s

In the old days of rwd American cars, engine width was not much of a concern. Length was, so the v8 came about. It fit in the length of an i4 but had double the displacement! You and all of your buddies loved the power and the sound. As you grew older and started a family, the Big Three continued to produce those v8s in differing configurations, but the parts were mostly the same. Everywhere you looked, from muscle cars to medium duty trucks, vehicles used the same 6 engine families - big and small blocks for each of the Big Three. How convenient that was! Parts were plentiful and shared across platforms through the decades. Technology improved but the knowledge you learned in your youth still applied, and you hoped that one day you would pass that knowledge on to your son. You dreamed of hot rodding a small block with your son and laying rubber all the way down the street.

Fast forward to now. Everywhere you look, people drive imports with turbocharged 4 bangers. The vehicles you loved are slowly rusting away or rotting in junkyards. Millions of potential burnout-inducing engines slowly disintegrate in junkyards, engines similar to those that you left your sweat on when you were younger. The kids you see are either uninterested in car culture or are infatuated with scraping their oil pans on the ground. You don't understand why anyone would want such a trait in their automobile.

Lost in a world that has forgotten the glory of American v8s, you slip away to your bed. You look at your wife, as old and unused as the small blocks you were just thinking of.

You go to sleep.

You don't wake up.

V8 is when there are enough cylinders going off per revolution that makes it relatively smooth. V12 is when perfect balance is achieved, anything more is redundant. Inline 6 is also well balanced.

Wut

The i8 was made before they realized they could make V8s.
>>
V6s sound like shit
need turbos to make good power
>>
>>14507098
V8 is not too large for cylinder displacement, which is probally why you won't see a 7L V10-V12 in a car. V6's can not compete with inline because config limits RPM, but they do not have the V8 power in which more cylinders at slower rotation generating the same or more power at crank with less strain. Which is to say a V is less high end reliable than an inline.

I'd debate that. On the other hand there's plenty of inline sixs that are also sad without a huffer.

I got a V4 right here
>>
Everything above V12 is unfeasibly large for passenger cars. V12 and V10 are too mechanically complex and therefore expensive for daily drivers. V6 is a relatively modern development and originally a mere space saver solution and didn't provide serious power for the longest time. V4 used to be a space saver solution until they figured out how to mount straight fours transversely with front wheel drive. V2 is motorcycle tier.

Why don't automakers ever use OHC V4's?

>why do we see less boxer engines?
Boxers are a gimmick meant for people who honestly believe that there is a handling advantage in having a Boxer. Also they are harder to service.

>why don't they start making V engines upside down?
Again, it's servicing. Why would you make it harder to get to the heads/valvtrain? You would literally have to jack the car up or get used to working on your back. Plus, lubricating the crank will be harder as well as trying to keep oil out of the combustion chamber. The pistons themselves will have to work against gravity, too. Furthermore the drivetrain would either be placed higher intruding more into the cabin or the cylinder heads would be barely scrapping the ground. One wrong bump and your whole valvetrain is fucked.

Upside-down V is pretty retarded the more I think about it.
