What are /o/ thoughts on beetles?

>poor man's 911?
>engine in the wrong place?

Pic related, bought it yesterday. Lovin it.
>>
A mass produced cheap car for oppressed people under hitlers reign.

Many people payed the government monthly instalments for ages but never received a beetle.

It's a bad car with a bad history and there's not much more to it.

It's easy to fix if that's a good thing.
>>
>>14497742
>easy to fix not being good

Come on now, people love to moan how hard it is to service newer crammed engines. This one's accessible as it gets.
>>
>>14497677
>poor man's 911?
no
>engine in the wrong place?
yes

>>14497742
Also, the design was stolen from a Czechoslovakian company called Tatra.

Still, it is an iconic classic so congrats on the purchase.
>>
A car for people with and who wish they had ovaries
>>
>>14497768
Well if the car were engaging and enjoyable I guess that would be a good thing but it being easy to fix is kind of like who cares.

It's kind of like a lawnmower being easy to fix. Ok. Who cares.
>>
>>14497775
Didnt knew about Tatra, I just bought into the "designed by Ferdinand Porsche" story... I'll do my research better.
Anyway, I like how the thing drives, even if it's nowhere near fast or anything, it just drives deliciously.
>>
Now take out the shitty 10hp engine and put literally anything made in the last 40 years in there.

Bonus points if it's a Japanese engine, a true Axis car.
>>
>>14497816
I dont plan on doing so, I'll only upgrade it to a double carburetor setup, which is good for about 80 HP with the 1.5 l engine.

Nice, I wouldn't take any other car as a classic econobox.

Here's my bastard 60s-looking '70, 1500cc single port engine, with IRS.

What are the specs on yours?
>>
>>14497853
Same specs as yours, 1500 engine, but stock suspension. What you did to the suspension?
>>
>>14497677
good luck m8.

looks sick
>>
>>14497677

A weird car owned by weird people.

I have yet to figure out if weird people like VW's, or if owning a VW makes you weird.
>>

strange, this isn't a miata...

well it's an interesting novelty. they're kind of cool I guess. too slow to be practical though.

they're pretty fun to drive, that's for sure
>>
>>14497880
The independent rear suspension is stock, I haven't done anything. Swing axle was the standard on earlier models.

>>14497843
Unfortunately a lot of performance stuff is made for 1600 dual port engines but I wouldn't be surprised if you could find a setup for yours.

I recommend getting a combo oil pressure/temperature sensor that goes in the plug for the oil pressure relief bypass. It gives good measurements and will provide vital information that can keep you from killing your engine by overheating or oil starvation. I want one but I already have a decent pressure sensor so it isn't as important.
>>
>>14497895
Miata is 10 times better than a beetle and you know that already.

Miata is actually fun and enjoyable.
>>
>>14497924
i thought you meant something more performance oriented. Mine has the leaf springs on each side. Considering it has only the stock fuel gauge and speedometer, yeah, i'm upgrading these.
Also, stock 1970's radio, it looks nice but i haven't touched it, and bought it without touching it too.
>>
>>14497893

its my pops dream car and hes got a few loose screws.

I'm pretty sure you have either left or right, both torsion bar based. Just look underneath.

Anyone know what these are like with swaybars and aftermarket coillovers?
>>
They're garbage. My grandfather has had ten, everything from stock low miles to goddamn 60hp well built models. They're all shit compared to anything. I would literally rather drive a Prius, a geo metro, a moped. They're awful in just about every way.
>>
>>14498673
>They're awful in just about every way.
You're comparing them to modern cars, which they weren't. They were compact, relatively fuel efficient cars in that era. You sure have quite the opinion of them for having never owned one.
>>
>>14498471

The point is that it was planned to be built as part of a nationwide scheme, you paid a fixed rate monthly installment over like 3 years and at the end you got your own Beatle and a holiday apartment at a seaside or lake resort, millions signed up to it but it was all a hoax and all the money went into funding the military.

The designs were found for it after the war and it was finally put into mass production under British supervision, the car is a symbol more than anything as it gave hundreds of thousands of people a livelihood in a destroyed post-war nation and set up the infrastructure that makes Germany an automotive powerhouse that it is today.

t. James May's Cars of the the People.
>>
>>14498815
Even compared to cars of that era and older they were shit, I was raised by my grandfather, I've driven many miles in plenty of them, the only redeeming feature is ease of repair. That's it.
>>
>>14498984
Guess they made 50 million of them because they were so terrible. They did the job, were fairly nimble, they'd start in the coldest weather. Not one shitbox you named will be found in any signifigant numbers 36 years past the last one of them being produced.

That Cayman is a better car, but Porsche just doesn't want to let it beat the 911 because muh heritage
>>
>>14500078
Why would it be the better car?
I mean, get all the iconic shit out of the way, and you get a car that has all of its traction at the driven wheels, and can be really light while doing so. Caymans are the temptation of going middle engine.

A long time ago I had a girlfriend with a Superbeetle. (kek) Underpowered, slow, terrible fuel economy, handled like a wheelbarrow, colder than fuck in the winter, hot in the summer....

Literally like living in 1939.

We have tech now. Don't bother unless you're really into anachronisms.
>>
How many jews can you fit in a beetle?

6,000,004

2 in front, 2 in back, and 6,000,000 in the ash tray.

It is known fact, and VolksWagen paid reparations to communist CzechoSlovakian government.

It is kind of funny that beloved hippies car is design ordered by Hitler and stolen from another country. It is true Nazi-mobile

The heating ducts run uninsulated underneath the running boards. Even when those ducts are not rotted out, those tiny vents at the base of the windshield barely defrost the ice to let you see out.

The Beetle's heater is such shit that even VW offered a gasoline powered accessory heater to mount underneath the rear seat to make the car acceptable in winter. Running it drops the fuel economy from mediocre to abysmal.

Seriously, these are a spring/autumn car for tinkerers. It's a time machine set to 1939.
>>
>>14508204
I live in a tropical country, so we'll never see such low temps around here.
I drove around with the bug on a quite hot day, I didn't missed the AC so much. But I agree 100% with the tinkerer part.
>>
While we're at it, let's talk about some other "features".

The fuel tank sits in the nose, bolted rigidly into the bodywork. Immediately behind and above it sits an exposed fusebox, guarded from shorts with only a piece of flammable cardboard. A serious head-on collision will rupture the fuel tank, spilling gasoline all over everything electrical up front. If you're luck you'll be ejected from the car in a crash so you don't burn to death.

And here is quirky: there is no washer fluid pump, only a valve and a connection to the spare tire up front. You'd better check the pressure in the spare by running the washers on occasion (which drains the pressure from the spare), otherwise you might find yourself with a flat tire and a flat spare.

This is a Beetle hate thread now. kek

this is an awful argument
>>
>>14508220
There's a pump on some models, which you actuate with your left foot.
Yeah, no one drives one of those death traps and thinks it's safe as a corolla, ffs.
