What's the best 4 cylinder car thats manual, is a 4 door, and is relatively quick or atleast handles well?
Need some ideas of what to look at for my first car, 19 year old here.
I was looking at mazda 3's since they seem cheap enough and have lots of aftermarket, but is it considered a "sports car," and would be expensive on insurance?

He said 4door.

Most likely because his parents won't let him get a coupe.
>>
>>14487439
My parents are perfectly fine with any car. But from what I hear, a car like a miata can be anywhere from 1 to 3 hundred a month for someone my age. Hence why I'm looking at 4 doors, although I'm not sure how much i would save, over a car like a miata. Insurance wise.

Buy a civic, shut up. Learn how to fix the basics on it, use it to get from school/work/fun. Save your money your "project drifto car".
>>
>>14487446
the number of doors legit has no effect on insurance.
>>
>>14487455
Seriously? I read multiple times that a coupe is always more expensive than a sedan or hatchback
>>
>>14487391
How come ? Unless your trying to do skids (which you shouldent be doing unless you can afford to pay for damages and have enough experience driving) then fwd can be alright.A civic si seems like a car that could fit what you want.
>>
>>14487461
I've always driven rwd, plus I do plan on doing some skidz here and there where I know its safe (primarily on lone roads in southern wisconsin.)
I just want something that's really easy to predict, and to me, rwd is the easiest.
>>

>>14487391
Only thing you would want RWD over FWD for is long sustained drifts, and you're not going to be doing those.

If you absolutely need RWD your only real option is a BMW E30/E36.
>>
>>14487483
How bad is working on a m30/e36, or the prices of replacement parts, compared to a miata? I hear beemers are always expensive to maintain, even the older cheaper ones

>>14487490
its bad nigga give up up on the the rwd meme desu unless you want a fucking crown vic or some shit be happy with a lighter snappy little fwd. Also what the fuck do you mean 300 a month to insure I am 22 and that is what my miata cost for 6 months.
>>
>>14487490
Loads of DIYs online nowadays, Engines go for 450-650 and transmissions 325-450.
>>
>>14487504
Meh, I'll have to look into fwd if I can't find any suitable rwd or awd vehicles.
And look it up, some people get insane quotes.
Like what the fuck is the insurance company thinking tier quotes
>>
>>14487509
Really? That cheap? Damn. Definitely gonna have to look into one of those, thanks m8
>>
>>14487490
It's gonna be less reliable and more expensive to fix than a Miata, but not by a ridiculous degree. It's 100% livable as a DD.

As long as you stick to a simple 4-cylinder model insurance and maintenance shouldn't be too bad.

It's a car you HAVE to work on yourself and keep on top of maintenance though, otherwise you'll end up deep underwater.

If you aren't willing to spend at most - barring catastrophic failure - a grand a year maintaining the car you should really consider just going the boring FWD route. Not saying you're gonna end up spending that, but it's a not an uncommon scenario I've seen with those cars.
>>
>>14487510
AWD does not equal sporty or better handling keep that shit in mind . You cant dorito driftotu those either. If your insurance company cant even get you a miata you will need to go econobox civic tier and just whip that shit around until you are 25 and accident free to stand a chance. My two cents just keep it in mind
>>

>>
>>14487521
A grand a year? Even if I do the work or most of it myself?
>>14487525
And I get what your saying. Miata should be the cheapest, if i can't afford that, then fuck, I don't know what I'm getting, lol
>>
>>14487531
>Even if I do the work or most of it myself?

Yes.

If you're not willing to spend that to have a sporty RWD car, get a sporty FWD car that will be about 1/3rd of the maintenance price.

I know it's a boring choice, but something like an Acura RSX or a Civic won't do you wrong.
>>
>>14487545
Why is it that fwd is so much cheaper, though?
Is it because no one over 25 who wants a sports car wants fwd?
>>
Legacy
>>
>>14487562
less components and cheaper to manufacture
>>
>>14487562
FWD gets better mileage, is cheaper to manufacture, and is easier for someone with little experience to maneuver in bad traction. RWD sacrifices all that for better driving feel.

Naturally FWD cars are gonna be geared towards being economical.

4 door Golf GTi, with better reliability, more practical. And cheaper to insure, and buy. Also, any A3 or Golf aftermarket part bolts right on.

Honestly your out of luck for any car that has any power for insurance. My first was a Honda Civic SI four door, and my insurance was crazy high. Now I nabbed a Meme STI and my insurance is still crap. Most insurance is based on the make and model, and how likely you and anyone in your age range drives said cars. Unluckily for you most anon drive like shit and wreck their rides, vtech kicking in to hard I guess.

Mazda3’s a good choice. It’s one of the sportier-feeling normal cars, and it’s practical and reliable as well. (The GTI is better in many ways, but isn’t reliable.)

No, it’s not remotely a sports car. But insurance carriers differ. Mine, AAA (in CA), has huge variations in premiums based on the car’s theft rate. That meant the Civic Si cost 150% more (i.e. 2.5x as much) to insure as a Corolla or Mazda3, all because of the ’99-’00 generation. Other Civics and Accords were also pretty expensive to insure through them. (This was a little while ago, not long after Honda made its car parts less interchangeable to address the theft problem.) Miata? Just a 5% sports car surcharge. So call your insurer and ask for quotes on specific models.
>>
Wow.... Op here, surprised this thread is actually still up, lol. Thanks everyone for your input, even if you tell me things I don't want to hear. Anyway, one of you mentioned that 4 doors aren't any cheaper than a 2 door? Anyone got any proof of that? And ok, fwd is much cheaper than rwd, but just how much?
How much more money would something like a ford focus or one of the cars another anon mentioned be, than a civic or another cheap fwd? I know I have to make a bunch of calls to find out for sure, I just want to figure out everything I can before I call and ask questions that make me sound like a retard.
>>
>>14492106
I'll get shit for this, but if you never plan on pushing your car near its limits every day then I feel you won't get much out of RWD.
>>
>>14487322
Focus RS. Drove one at the dealer 2 weeks ago. Fantastic little poor persons car.
>>
>>14487391
your a litteral retard.
a mazdur s3 is ff and not a sports car.
>>
>>14487458
not on economy cars.
>>
>>14492119
Why do you say that?
Anyway, I do plan on pushing my car, not too much though, well, not too often. I would never do something stupid that can harm/kill another person, like drift around a blind corner, drift in ice/heavy rain, things like that. Most of the pushing I'm gonna do on the car, would be on some windy roads in wisconsin I hardly see anyone on.
I also do plan on tracking the car, not frequently, though. Maybe once a year for shits n giggles, until I'm 25 and can get a real car, (if i find out a miata or some other 2 door is too expensive.)

And could someone give me some pros and cons to FWD, just incase I do end up with one? So i know sort of what to expect. When I think of rwd i think of the rear tires pushing the car, awd, all tires pulling the car. But when I think of fwd, I think of the front tires practically dragging the rest of the car's weight behind it, making it not so stable through corners. How far off am I in thinking that?
>>
>>14492192

>>
>>14492209
Well, fwd is the most stable rather than the other way around. The biggest difference between fwd and red is what happens when the wheels start slipping; in both cars they slow down a bit unless they have a limited slip diff, but the rwd will point the front end to the inside of the corner, while the fwd car straightens out and makes the steering wheel vibrate more.

Other wise it isn't a factor, modern cars have shit steering feel if they are power assisted due to EPA and everything else depends on the setup and design of the car.

Fwd cars may be able to be setup more aggressively than rwd cars, but have less options on how to tackle a corner. Of course, that could force you to learn more about using the car's momentum and thus to drive better. Traction wise they depend more on weight distribution than anything, although it's much more difficult to make an fwd car that has high acceleration from a stand still and corner well, than a rwd car.

You can set up a fwd car to corner fine. Test drive a Civic Si, Fiesta, Focus and Mazda 3. Chances are you'll like them. Rwd is fun but fwd can be too. In normal street driving, the differences are negligible.

If you're fine financially or get parental assistance, finance something that's not super old. You'll be in a better position if you ever want to buy a newish car in the future when you have more money.
