Just bought a brand new Mazda 2 1.5 Diesel for £10,000

Have I done good?
>>
The Jeremy Clarkson in me wants to say no. The tiny diesel engine will be too underpowered to move the car at carriageway speeds, while also being economical. Because it will not be able to stay low in the revs.

The James May in me likes a well made econobox that isn't boring to look at.
>>
>>14456160
The lower gears seem to hold a lot of power, you could really feel it when you put your foot down

Gears 5-6, not so much but easily overcome.

I am coming from a 2003 Fiesta so anything newish i drive is easily going to feel better

Who buys a diesel supermini, Honestly...
>You don't use it for long distance highway commute to take advantage of the diesel economy.
>Most superminies are used in town when the lots of coldstart will fuck up a diesel engine
>Most supeminies won't get used enough to counterweight the high maintenance.
>>
>>14456199
The vast majority of my mileage is motorways, 40 miles round trip to get to work plus whenever I have to commute elsewhere for my job which is usually 60 miles+

I've done the research, diesel was the best option for me
>>
>>14456217
I would have thought something with a larger diesel and longer ratios would have been better for lots of motorway driving.

Something like a 320d or such. I'll defer to your research though.
>>
>>14456243
I'm still young (20), only been driving a few months.

Anything more would have destroyed me on the insurance.
>>
>>14456262
That makes sense, I'm paying £63 a month on a 320Ci at 22 with 3 years no claims and 3 points, a fresh driver would be annihilated on insurance.

It's all a huge scam anyway, I've paid over £2000 in 3 years and not gotten a penny back
>>
1.5 liters for 10k

I have 5.7 liters for 5k

plus, that car looks like trash and my truck looks astonishing

so yeah, you fucked up big time bud
>>
>>14456243
why would you buy a diesel op???
>it will suit my needs anon
why did you buy the WRONG diesel??

jesus christ shut the fuck up
>>
>>14456287
>Hating on diesel

While I disagree with OPs choice of diesel in a tiny car like that, big diesels are a beautiful thing

I miss my Range Rover. 2.5 straight six turbo diesel, 200hp, 27mpg... £119 a month in insurance....
>>
>>14456275
your 10year old POS truck might not have the same featues than a brand new japanese car
>>
>>14456273
I pay 1.5k/year for a 1.4i 2011 civic

The feels
>>
>>14456287
>why would you buy a diesel op???
Because you wont hate your car after you look at the gas consumption display

Im 22 and own a golf 7 tdi 2.0. Even when you smash the pedal like a maniac, my car only wastes 6.5 litres max. Driving ecofriendly like a faggot goes down to 4.5-5
>>
>>14456469
All my insurance premiums have been less than £1000

>First year £932
>Second year £678
>Third year £641 (bigger car)
>This year £731 (swapped cars halfway through)
>Next year, looks about £450 or so judging by the estimates

Do you live in a crime ridden shithole or something?
>>
>>14456526
>tfw 16L/100km

I love my Saab, yet also hate it
>>
>>14456549
Lmao, talking about crime ridden shitholes, I'm from Lithuania and I only paid around 200 euros for insurance in the first year I was driving, and I drove a fucking BMW 525.
>>
>>14456561
I know this hate/love feel
But as soon as I had a diesel, I only love/love it.
Only downside for me is the crap noise though.
>>
>>14456586
UK insurance premiums are hilariously inflated. There's basically no market regulation, but insurance is legally mandated so they take us for a ride with no lube
>>
>>14456146
I'm really trying to think of a set of reasons that would justify spending that much on a car like that but, dammit, you could get a perfectly presentable old Yaris or whatever for a fifth of that at the cost of little more than a bit of a cosmetic wear and some out-of-date interior gadgetry. I just don't understand the mindset that buys a new economy car.
>>
>>14456614
Pretty much this.

You did okay anon, your commute isn't much different from mine, I'd say the Mazda will hold up well.

Diesel's the same price as petrol at the moment, if you're in a city you won't do spend much time over 50mph during rush hour. A diesel supermini works well within budget.
>>
>>14457219
The mindset is, it's a monthly expense rather than an asset.

You buy (rent / lease) new, you get a full warranty, you inherent no damage or abuse from previous owners, you often get servicing included.

It costs more long term than buying used, but you pretty much just set a monthly budget and find whatever fits in that, replacing it with something new every 3 or so years.
>>
>>14457372
Maybe that makes sense - I've never really looked into leasing. I suppose it would depend on the value of the servicing etc relative to how much greater the long-term cost actually is.

However, OP literally said he bought it for 10k, so that's all kinda moot.
>>
>>14457219
brand new ecocars make the most sense actually because once you have one you can stick to it for 10+ years with very, very minor investments, especially if you aren't dumb

Like, you buy 10 year old car for 2k with the intent to drive it for another 10 years

OP buys brand new car for 10k, with the intent to drive it for 10 years

In the end OP will probably spend less, provided he hasn't bought a shitty car (which he hasn't by the by)

And yes I have even taken into account the

>hurr I am master mechanic/fabricator I can fix my car for ZERO money
>hurr it r impossibru my 240 iz l bulletproof

and none of these things are bound in reality, fyi
>>
>>14457401
Surely in that case you'd be better off buying something around two years old, perhaps from a dealership approved used scheme if you're being really cautious, so the main depreciation hit has gone but maintenance costs haven't ramped up yet?

I appreciate the general point though. I posted more to find out what the justifications actually were than to criticise OP.
>>
>>14456146
ofcourse not, its a mediocre shit econobox. Why would anyone do this to themselves, ill never know
>>
>>14457452
Maybe, maybe not, personally if I were to pick up an ecobox with the intent to keep it for a long time I wouldnt worry about depreciation hit and certainly prefer it to be as fresh as possible and with full warranty

But I'm european and extended warranties are shit and everyone here abuses their cars/only sell when they know something is about to go wrong and CPO is a literal scam

Also a lot of ecoboxes here keep their value like crazy, at least the good ones, certainly not worth saving 1-2k over potential issues/shorter warranty

Thinking about it used car market is horrible unless you're shopping for something like a 1M or a collectible car

But yeah all of this may or may not apply to the US, OP certainly isn't american though
>>
>>14457488
>OP certainly isn't american though
OP is def not american, hes prob a gook/indian seeking approval for his mazda.
>>
>>14457488
Plus, finance rates are often better for new cars than used, from my experience with dealers, with dealer deposit contributions, minimum trade in values etc.

Leasing is a piece of piss nowadays. Golf R, M135i etc for ~£250/pcm.

If you want max eco, there are cars for <£100/pcm
>>
>>14457507
probably just a middle class brit
>>14457538
I dont know about financing or leasing, the only time I checked out finance rates it was on some VAG cars through porsche banking, and I can say the payments were actually acceptable but the selection was shite. Good move if your wife wants a brand new q5 and you dont feel like throwing out all the money at once though

I've got £11k and I'm in the market for a diesel for my fuckoff long commute (50 miles daily)

I NEED THIS SHIT.

I work for a UK insurer and can confirm, we get completley ripped off in this country.

>>14456549
What company was that with? If it was recent I can confirm that the cover would have been complete garbage.
>>
>>14456309
All you fucking need is a defroster, cigarette lighter, and a radio. THAT'S IT

WHY
>>
>>14458223
50 miles isn't that bad on motorway, that's an hour, give or take.

>>14458214
Not everyone is interested in cars, the majority of the population just view them as an appliance.

>Diesel

Skyactiv-D?
>>
>>14456146
Couldn't you get at least 1.9?
Does it have a tarbo at least?
You are a bit too late to the diesel party anyway. Nowadays with bullshit like particulate filters and start-stop systems they got really hurt both reliability wise and in maintenance cost.

Nevertheless, diesels are fine for DD. I especially like that they can easily start moving from the clutch alone. You really start to appreciate it when you're stuck in a traffic.
>>
>>14456146
Well, think about it this way.
You could've bought a low mileage Clio 197/200 Cup, which is possibly the best hatchback available for that sort of money.
>>
>>14460794
His insurance would've bummed him on one.
Plus half the fuel economy. And to be honest, as great as they are, a car like that I wasted on a boring daily motorway commute. You can barely stretch its legs between the traffic, the novelty would soon wear off.
>>
>>14460800
Having commuted sometimes 80+ miles a day in one, I can guarantee you that is not the case, it just doesn't get boring. The only thing that ruins it are the wear and tear issues that start to crop up around 60K+ miles.
>>
>>14460800
>>14460816
And, also for reference, I'm the same age as OP, and my insurance was like £600 fully comp, so I hardly got bummed. It was literally £30 cheaper if I had changed to a 1.4 Jazz Si when I was going to.
>>
>>14456160
Small diesels in small cars are just fine for crusing at 77.
>>
>>14458037
>What company was that with?

LV, Privilege, Churchill then back to Privilege. And the cover was pretty shit, but I went for the cheapest since I wouldn't be buying insurance at all if I wasn't legally required to do so.
>>
>>14461145
Did you not use comparison sites? They will always quote low and then bump up the premium when you go ahead, but they're usually still cheaper than going direct.
>>
>>14461170
I did, I have in fact only bought insurance through comparison sites

Most of the time I get the same premium qouted, but they try and get me to waste money on the extras

>Only £38,41 a month!
>But for just an extra £9.99* you can have legal assistance!
>And for just £14.99* more you can have breakdown cover!
>Don't forget courtesy cars! Only an extra £9.99* **!

>*all rates are per month
>**Courtesy cars are 1000cc hatchbacks and are only for a maximum of 7 days
>>
>>14461193
Courtesy car fees are a joke. You can get a compact car for a week for about £30. Sometimes less. You can often rent Fiat 500s for £2 a day for fuck's sake.
>>
>>14461239
When my 320Ci bit the dust I just drove my mum's Fiat Panda for a few days while I was car hunting

Why even bother with fully comped if you aren't going to abuse it?
>>
