SO I FUCKED UP /dbt/ my dumbass didn't use a torque wrench and tightened the drain plug too tight on my 05 Ninja 250 and now there's a hairline crack. It leaks.

I've seen suggestions on forums to weld it, and there's a few welders nearby that would probably do it for cheap, but would this work? Since the drain hole is slightly wider due to the crack wouldn't welding it still make the drain plug not seal? Worst case I guess I could just have it all sealed completely and just drain the oil through the filter from now on but I'd rather not.

wat do guys? This is my first bike ;_;

There is no paperwork. That's why you prolly shouldn't bother.
You need to go find out your state inspection checklist and take it to that bike and check everything that's there.

You can ask the owner if he ever got any inspection paperwork but spoileralert hardly anyone gets their bike inspected. You can avoid that too and claim it's a dualsport.

Here's what you need at face value:
mirrors
running daytime headlight and turn signals.
Tailight that also illuminates license place
odometer
speedometer
Front and rear brakes.
That should cover you if a cop looks at you.

I've never gotten my bike inspected and no cop has asked to see the inspection sticker. YMMV

Shit these new bikes are shit, i have never used a Torque wrench for a drain plug, specialy on older bikes. It's probably because its a shit bike made in thailand or china.
>>

In my state, to get a plate what i do is take the bike there with a title and bill of sale and they come out to look at the VIN number (you need one) and the odometer and then hand me a plate and tell me to get it inspected.

I've been avoiding street legalising anything myself because mybstate requires paperwork from the original owner (very hard to find often)
But if I can get a bike that pssses mkst criteria I can always say " just bought it was told it was street legal"

But aren't there like seals or certain ways the bottom half of the crankcase must be taken apart or put back together? And ways the internals have to be handled? Like there's no way it can be just bolt off then on right?

I'm used to working on cars, BMWs specifically, and I'm just kind of worried cause compared to BMWs I'm actually surprised about how little tutorials there are for my bike.

>>14229193
Yeah but how would JB weld press together the spreading of the threads? I'm worried about the diameter staying too wide that the bolt doesn't even tighten, cause that's what it's doing now.

Also I definitely wouldn't be welding it. I'd have some shop or whatever nearby do it.

You can throw any motor on with typical pitbime mounting
Though make sure the carb will fit
IF you have a clutch, that means you're going to have to work both the front brake an clutch with your left hand
Unless you buy a peg kit (that's like a billion dollars) then it will be just like an dirtbike
>>14229504
Yeah I fill it up once every 2 ish weeks with about a gallon of gas
Guestimated 80+ mpg
As for the bike lane, its in the grey zone, in the USA if it had a smaller motor /you could, mines a 125 though I'm trying to find a 49cc stamp to put on it so I can get away with more
Il sell you it
This thing is stupid fun on trails

>>14229504
My knowledge for street legality etc is limited, I know mostly on my state but most states are similar

Motor has to be 49cc or smaller
30ph top speed
One gear
Seat over a certain height
Pedals
Not like anyone would know or care about displacement

So whats a good starter bike for someone 6 feet tall and skinny as a rail? I can't decide if cruiser or sporty is what I want, probably depends on what feels more comfortable.
>>
>>14229795
as a fellow hungry skeletor who comes from a family of hungry skeletors that all ride bikes, get something with a comfy seat, my brothers bike for an example is one of those new yamaha meme supreme bikes and the seat is uncomfortable as all hell, after about an hour of sitting on it you feel like someone hit you in the tail bone with a cricket bat.

To the anons in the last thread wondering about NYC roads:

Stick to The Bronx and Central Park (when the roads are actually open). They tend to be smoother. Westchester is a safe bet too.

Stay away from the the East Side of Manhattan (potholes, tar snakes, and road ripples for days, any of the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge connecting roads, the Cross Bronx Expressway (especially near the GWB), and the Bruckner Boulevard (Yeah sure, the sound acoustics are cool, but the road is NOT taken care of).

The more congested boroughs are a real pain to enjoy unless you can ride them in that sweet spot where the slip caused by the fresh pavement is gone and the repairs for new ripples haven't formed.

I personally like:

>Henry Hudson Parkway
>Saw Mill Parkway (Be careful! It eventually does get covered in tar snakes past Tarrytown)
>Sprain Brook Parkway (Absolutely based for high speed runs with moderate difficulty)
>Sheridan Expressway North to Connecticut
>I-95 and I-87 for the most part
>Central Park
>West Side Highway
>Bruckner Expressway
>Pelham Parkway/Bronx River Parkway
>Taconic State Parkway (If you keep your eyes peeled for cops)
>Merritt Parkway

Not quite m80. Its a KH100 EL my dad bought for dirt cheap when i was a kid to ride around the algonquin trails. Its beat to all, seats held down with straps and i had to replace the lever on the fuel switch with a screw since it snapped off in a crash, but the damn thing still runs like a kenyan once you let it warm up a little.

Maybe i'll post pictures later. I warn you though, it is the shittest shit bike you ever will see. Hardly recognizable as a KH100, since i took most of the extraneous bits off and fiddle with the suspension for offroading

I think you'll need to do stand ups if you want to get that thing up for a long amount of time, they're geared tall stock for track purposes.

Put your left foot on the pillion pegs and keep your right foot on the brake, roll the throttle on and pop the clutch.

This will scare the dick off you the first time you try it standing up, I nearly started hyperventilating the first few I rode out but once you're used to it you'll love them way more than sitdowns.

Daytona 675 or one of the Big 4 600cc?

They don't make as much of a difference in price as I thought. Decent Big 4s are around 4500-5000€, decent Daytonas around 4800 - 5500€

How is the reliability?
Maintenance cost?

>>
>>14230493
I can't speak for the Daytona. I can speak for jap bikes.

90s CBRs have reputation for being absolute tanks and living on forever, surviving years of abuse and asking for more.

You're likely to find a great deal more of used parts (some intercompatible from other models) and have all sorts of aftermarket options (from Chinese crap to expensive stuff).

Since jap bikes also have a larger market share, if you ever need help of a mechanic, he's likely to know more about the bike you have. He's also more likely to have your part lying on a shelf somewhere.

If maintenance alone is a factor, a jap bike is a no brainer.

>How is the reliability?

In terms of the 675 Trumpys from the last 8 years, I'd say on par with the big 4 Jappers on both counts.
If out of any of the middle weight supersports, I'd buy the 675 based on power delivery alone, although keep in mind the riding position on the Daytona is quite aggressive in a similar vein to the R6 Yammy, where as the Honda and Suzuki are more forgiving for spending longer commuting hours.

Although, my mentality is, if you're looking at supersports, you're looking for an aggressive sports bike anyway...

I would buy one if I had the cash to just have one as a track bike and to occasionally rub my dick on it.

I wouldn't own one as a road going every day bike, I still think japanese is the way to go if you plan on riding it every day.

Good to hear. I fell in love with that i3 and looks.
I'll inform myself some more. If everything works out I can get it either end of the season or next year.

>>14230503
Yeah I heard that before. I won't touch electronics so that adds to maintenance cost, I'll look up how much that would be.

>>14230510
Ayy
I ride a '94 Katana currently and it's a tank indeed and very easy to work on. I'm looking for something newer though and I have no experience with bikes with lots of electronical things. I'm not so worried about engine reliability, more the electronics. I'd take a jap 600cc without hesitation but the Daytona is something different I'd like to try.

>>14230514
I'll testride it before, only supersports related thing I rode so far is a GSXR600. I don't mind an aggressive riding position
>>
>>14230543
My issue is that it's heavier than it's bigger brother
>>14230541
what competition? do they race in the 600 class?
>>
>>14230543
I daily mine on the road and don't really have a problem with it. The riding position doesn't become a pain in the ass until you're sitting in really slow traffic, but even then prior cooling issues means I can lanesplit and play it off as trying to keep my expensive italian bike from costing me $400

I'll probably upgrade my cooling in the spring though when I go to repaint it.

Shit, even Casey Stoner had trouble with Ducati.
Plus
I'm not a fan of the way they sound
>>14230560
>I've never heard of an MV going over 100k
The main issue with them is the way the exhaust is set up. The headers sit right next to the plastic radiator fan, which has the blades melt every now and again. Also, the radiator lacks any supports on the right side, which causes it to crack in the top left corner. They fixed this on the new models, but on the older ones you needed a bracket to help support them both. That and some muzzy aluminum radiator fans are the most common upgrades.

Supposedly the engines are bulletproof, and desu mine feels practically brand new at 11000 miles. I'll definitely try to take it up to 100k though and brag on /dbt/ about it if it makes it. Maintenance is just sort of expensive and it needs to be taken care of just like any bike to hit 100,000 miles. Even jap bikes will shit the bed if you aren't taking care of them.

>>14230569
>but Stoner could?

So I'ma tad confused lads, in my motorcycle class we were taught to find the friction zone and, for slow movements, to half-engage the clutch, can all motorcycles do this? I hear things like a wet/dry clutch, slipper clutch, and "ride the clutch" and I have all these things kinda jumbled.

Thanks for the help anyone.

Question for anyone with a liquid cooled road bike: What are your thoughts on radiator guards?

Because of the oilfields the roads here are often covered in mud chunks and many a car has gotten broken windshield from rocks tossed up by watertrucks
>>
>>14230912

May be worth investing in one then, radiators can take a few hits, but if it's that common it's probably a good idea to keep it protected.

Your pads could have worn too much on the center and not enough on the inside, which paired with a caliper that isn't too much on the loose side, is making them hard to remove.

Try sliding the caliper up and down while trying to pull it out. It usually comes out at one point. Be careful not to do any lateral force as to bend it.

Old mount spot on the left, new on the right.

The main issue I had with the older mount position, was that it was angled ever so slightly off, so if I put the camera into a lock position either looking more straight forward, or looking down, either the road or the bike would be cut off, and the new one is angled perfectly along with being low on the helmet and forward enough to see past the front of the helmet if I look to the left.

really in car buying or motorcycle buying you should avoid no title vehicles unless you know exactly where and when it was lost.

could be stolen
>>
Im 18 should i get a bike? Wat bike? My car payment is 2 much
>>
>>14231626
>if he goes to the dmv with me shouldn't it be fine?
Nope, first of all he might sell it to you and never go to the DMV. It might also be a salvaged bike.
The only way to be sure is to run a VIN check but i'll bet real life cash he won't even let you look at it until you hand over your money.

no

none

Then you sure as fuck can't afford a bike.
Find an insurance place that will actually insure you and you'll find one that will charge you $300 a month.

We know you're not going to listen. Wear a full face helmet so that when you do crash you'll be alive.

Google the type of battery needed for the CBR and bring it. If he won't let you use it walk away. You need to make sure the bike runs and runs without a parasitic draw. that bitch is 20 years old.

>any way to approach the lost title vehicle just in case It actually is a great deal?

Call him make and ask to look at the VIN in person. If anything other than yes, okay, walk away.

any other tips other than the VIN? I won't give him the money before I know he has a clean title (I could call the dmv for a title check right?)

with the cbr could I just let a battery from my kawasaki 250 sit in it for now? or do I have to buy a new one? What about bringing the battery to go charge it at a local autozone?

Is it legal to ride my dualsport off-road anywhere that doesn't specifically prohibit it, assuming my bike meets all the off-road motorcycle laws of my state?

I can find tons of information about how I can legally ride off-road but no information as to where.
>>
>>14231685
>before I know he has a clean title
But he doesn't. You absolutely need a physical in your hand title.
>(I could call the dmv for a title check right?)
No.
That bike could have been bought in New York. Why would Florida DMV know anything about it. That's why you need a physical title.

>with the cbr could I just let a battery from my kawasaki 250 sit in it for now?
I wouldn't chance it. It could be too different and roast the electronics.

>What about bringing the battery to go charge it at a local autozone?
The battery could be physically fucked up an no amount of charging would cure it.

Welcome to the pain in the ass world of buying used bikes.

Tbh senpai if the price is too good to be true then it is. I would avoid Craigslist anyway.

I would have had to disassemble the rear and get a new suspension
I bought it for 900€ and sold it with almost no loss
my parents need a new car in the forseeable future, maybe I can convince them to buy an 190e or a w124 and trade my car with that

other question:
I have an xs where the steering end stop got bent when I crashed it
can I somehow fix this?
I think if I try to bend it back it will just get loose and break off, is it possible to weld stuff like that?

>avoiding craigslist
why? where else would I buy my used bikes
>>
>>14231740
>12V battery should be fine right?
Yes but you also need to make sure it actually physically fits in the bike.

The other problem is the dude said it's been sitting for over 6 months.
Now since it's carbureted, if he didn't store it properly (most people don't) that bike isn't going to start. Same reason why people buy a new lawnmower every summer.
The CBR is the better prospect than the Yamaha. If you want it call and ask if he treated the gas or drained the carbs before letting it sit. If neither then avoid it because you have a hell of a job ahead of you.

It's also been treated a million times better.
The worst thing you can do to a bike is let it sit.
26k miles is low miles for something that old.
You're not going to find a masterpiece for under $2000 m8.
I did but i was stupid lucky.

>but if the bike can run with a jumpstart it should be fine
He says it needs a jumpstart because it's been sitting for over 6 months.
That tells me he hasn't attempted to start it in over 6 months.
Gas varnish doesn't just disappear if you can get the bike started holmes.

You can run various cleaners through it. Sometimes i've had to dump MMO in my bikes but if it's good and waxed it would take decades of running cleaners to actually clean the thing. It all depends on how he stored it. You need more information other than it sat for 6 months.
