Thinking about getting a bmw as a dd within the next 8 months and I came to /o/ for advice on it. Only Requirements are 4 doors, strong community, can only be model years between 1995 - 2011, and can take some slight neglect as I'll be in the air force by the time I get the car (leave for bmt on the 19th) and I don't know how my schedule will be. Any help is appreciated
>>
Also I can't do a 7 series too much car
>>
>>14202704
why not just wait until youre out of bmt?
>>
>>14202704
e90 if you can afford it. N52 naturally aspirated engine. Buy a good one and you have a modern RWD top quality reliable car with even some brand reputation.
>>
>>14202704
Buy a 2008-2011 E90 328i in automatic like every other normie and enjoy your 7 second 0-60 time. Enjoy being passed up by Camrys? That's okay, your bavarian flag will remain in last place with you to comfort you.
>>
Those model years basically mean your prices are going to range between $3k and $20k. How much are you really looking to spend?

BLUNDER OF THE CENTURY
>>

It really depends on the model.
I wouldn't call being left to sit neglect either, long as you're maintaining it while you're not deployed.
>>
>>14202784
What Camry is faster than that? I realize you're shitposting but at least give something plausible.
>>
How do you even "maintain" a BMW? Serious question.

Do you just drive to the nearest BMW dealership once a month and tell them to prevent a breakdown?

How the fuck do you know what needs to be replaced before it fails?
>>
>>14203191
You change the fluids and filters.
When a check engine light comes on, you figure out what it is and fix it.
This sounds like basic shit but people in America will drive around for months with a CEL and then be surprised when their car leaves them stranded and go "omg [car brand] sucks I'll never buy them again"
Pretty much every community for every vehicle will have a write up of what you can expect at what mileage too. For example, E46 fuel pumps start to fail around 125k miles so replacing it at 100k will prevent you from having problems.
>>
>>14203191
Same as any car. You look at the maintenance schedule and do what it says. Usually changing filters and oil.

This guy definitely got to 60 in under 6 seconds.

Interesting. That's the fastest automatic E9x 328i I've seen.

Sounds like you need a corolla friend

Mistake number 1
>>
>>14202745
That's the point I am bmt for air force is 8 and a half weeks plus the 2 months for my tech school. I need to get an idea while I still have the time
>>
>>14202784
What would you recommend then
>>
>>14203115
Preferable no more than 12k
>>
>>14203581
I want to actually enjoy driving and Camry's aren't exactly known for that
>>
Bump

Not OP but, I've been looking at E91 wagons. Just the 328i. From what I've seen so far, it's by far the most bullet proof E90 series engine. I haven't looked at the maintenance but I'm assuming it's just routine fluid changes, timing belt and water pump?
>>
>>14204667
>timing belt
Pretty sure every BMW ever uses superior timing chains, so no timing belt service needed either.
>>
>>14204677
My mistake there, I was wrong to assume they used belts
>>

>E46 M3
definitely going to be at the top of your price range at the very least
>E39 540i
Hard to find, especially in manual, but you should be able to get one for $6-7k.
>E39 530i
~$5k
>E46 330i
~$6.5k

Personal choice would be the 530i just because they're cheap, easy to find, and don't have the potential subframe issues of the E46.
Once you're in the AF you'll probably find yourself wanting something more once you're making actual money, assuming you went into a good rate (I don't know what they're called in the AF, navy guy here) and aren't starting out as an E-1. Then you can get something like an E46 M3.
>>
>>14202704
1995 - 2011?
>>
>>14204871
Not too old not too new should be able to find some in those years within my price range and not too dated looking
>>
>>14204701
I feel like I'd have to dump a lot of money and time in to maintaining an e46 m3 especially since it's going to be a 11+ year old high performance machine
>>
>>14204701
How does the e39 handle and does bmw make 18inch or 16inch rims?
