Sup guys pretty new to the offreading scene. I drive a 99 wrangler sport I6 4.0L

All the money I've put in has been repairs not a single upgrade. I plan to bedliner my fender flares and side steps, install an aussie locker in the front, lift 3 inches since my shocks and springs are completely worn anyways and put on 31 inch tires. I like mostly just driving trails and dirt roads. Absolutely terrified of rocks and mud is kinda meh.

Not really sure what I want to do with my YJ.
I think I'm just going to do SOA with d44s.

I barely drive it anymore, can't really sell it, lost interest in offroad a bit since none of my friends are into it so reluctant to drop money in it.

My dad wants to SBC swap it, but if we're doing that why not just go all out with 1 tons and 4 link t b h

My dad's a big jeep guy and picked up this '85 nissan 720 for $1k as a project for us after I showed interest in his neighbor's toyota. Previous owner rebuilt the top and bottom and totally gutted the thing. We have it running with a weber conversion and mostly back together now except for tail lights, seatbelts and other lesser important things.

Planning on doing a solid axle swap and bobbing the back 13" or so, already have a toyota front axle waiting to get swapped in.

It's sitting on 33s right now and it does ok offroad for IFS, probably gonna go 34s or 35s when we're done with it.

Yeah I kind of wish he had scored a toyota instead just for the aftermarket. It's all good though, gonna have to fab pretty much everything for this build, SAS shit, front and rear bumpers, cage etc.. My dad did welding for a living so it'll be a good exercise to learn on.

Digging that flatbed btw, might do that instead of bobbing the bed.
>>
>>14177398
That's it. Also 4Runners are pretty limited on tire size, even with a lift which I'm not a huge fan of. See what you can do with the largest tire you can fit with full suspension travel at the stock suspension height and see if you need more.

Don't do that. You'll regret it. A simple budget boost with shocks is all you need to run 31's. On a TJ you can run 33s with no rub on 3.5" of lift. I personally know a couple guys running 33s on a zone 3" lift.

Really depends on what you're going to go through. 31 inch all terrains will get you anywhere you need to go in the woods by me, but there's some places you need at least a 35. Tire pressure matters a lot too, I'll bring a compressor and air down when I'm playing in the sugar sand

Yes, it does. IFS has shit flex, they basically have two tiny axles, one for each wheel and that's what limits the amount of flex. They're also weak as fuck.

Ever wonder why people who are serious about offroading never use IFS? Go look at pure offroad builds and 99%+ use solid axles. Shit, guys go through the expense and trouble of cutting IFS crap out just so they can weld in link or leaf shackles for solid axles.

It's fucking trash for offroad.

Articulation is an important aspect of offroading, anon. No matter how retarded you act your IFS truck will always get shit on by solid axle trucks.
>>
>>14178858
>Articulation is an important aspect
No, it isn't.
>>
>>14178820
Look at this faggot, Flex is everything when you're offroad. It keeps you much more stable while crawling over uneven terrain. Also since you can keep all 4 tires on the ground you have more traction for moving forward. Lockers help no matter the suspension design, but flex and lockers is the way to go.

It adds some perceived stability, but traction gets reduced due to removing weight from the tires. Most solid axle setups have about the same flexibility as their independent counter parts, anyway. Of course you're going to argue about some super modified thing, though.
>>

>>
>>14178801
>ifs shit flex

>>
>>14178885
Have you ever heard of unsprung weight? It actually helps offroad. Solid axle trucks have more unsprung weight which helps keep the tires against the ground to give traction while flexed out. Also stock for stock a solid axle vehicle will always outflex a IFS truck. But who leaves their 4wd stock and goes offroad seriously? Also the bigger the tire the more weight, the larger the axles the more weight is helping keep the vehicle moving forward while flexing out.

Video very related.

>traction gets reduced due to removing weight from the tires
This is such a silly statement I don't even...look at the photo of the hummer on the ramp with one wheel just all hanging out. Now look again at the tacoma, think about how the weight is being transferred in these vehicles.

The tacoma has more evenly distributed weight all around, the rear tires are damn near even while the front right tire has the brunt of the weight the front left still has a substantial amount. You can tell by the compression of the tires.

The humvee has the vast majority of its weight on the rear right and front left, it's also about to tip the fuck over.

Right, you're starting to get it now!

>Most solid axle setups have about the same flexibility as their independent counter parts
That's simply not true.

Where did you people learn physics?
>>
>>14178900
Try using that in the real world in the rocks, it has a lot of travel yes, but it wont flex the way you want like a solid axle. That setup is for desert racing, not 4 wheeling in the rocks.
>>
>>14178932
forgot vid

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xl9PxGF6jD4

>>14178900
That's likely one of the most extreme examples of IFS flexing and it still isn't all that impressive.
>>
>>14178900

And thats when price comes in to the picture. You get equal results with a tenth of the money spent with SA
>>
>>14178946
Clearly this is a troll, no one is this stupid. Because apparently all the 4wd experts in the world are all wrong and you're right is that it? Thousands of solid axle swaps each year and all of them looking for more flex, to say they are all wrong when the results prove themselves.

It is you who has no understanding of physics. Because in the real world solid axles and flex beat shitty IFS.

My suburban has leaf springs front and rear, and still outflexes IFS trucks. Pic related, back when I had the 37s...

My 4runner I just picked up will have a 3 link in the front, leafs in the rear with full width 1 ton axles. It will flex with the best of them.
>>
>>14178885
>It adds some perceived stability
Having all four wheels on the ground is more stable than trying to balance on two or three.

End of story.

>but traction gets reduced due to removing weight from the tires
The vehicle does not become heavier and improve traction when one wheel lifts.
Your net weight is the same. Dividing it up between four wheels instead of two increases your chances of one of the wheels being driven of being on a surface where it can make traction.

>Most solid axle setups have about the same flexibility as their independent counter parts
Except it's far easier to gain articulation with solid axles than it is with independent suspension.
>>
>>14179623
Still have 47s and 52s? You'd get even more out of it with leafs going with 52s and 63s.

Question: some American company based in Lancaster is offering to five me a full exhaust system.

"This system has a Helmholtz chamber instead of a muffler so you get all the benefits of a straight thru exhaust system with out the noise and with no DRONE!"

It has 52s up front, with the B52 kit from DIY4x, and 56s in the rear which are factory w/ shackle flip. It wouldn't flex that good if it had the 47s... Haha

With the 52s front and 56s rear it flexs amazingly offroad, the RTI ramp doesn't do it justice.

How much trouble can I get in for driving on service roads? There are a ton of logging/service roads owned by the city or county down here in South VA. If the land isn't posted as no trespassing, can I off road on it?

Here is a video of me using my WJ on one of the service roads:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nD5vE8nh4c4

I have plenty more videos if /o/ is at all interested. My WJ doesn't have any real performance mods, yet. I intend on doing a 2/4 inch lift with 31's sometime this summer. I'm not a big fan of crawling, more so just want clearance for high level water and holes/ruts. I've already bottomed out a few times on things I've seen stock TJs make it through flawlessly.
>>
>>14180189
You will definitely need to regear, question is what size tire you see yourself ending up with. In some cases it may be cheaper to find an axle set with 4.10 gears in it then to buy new R/P gears and install it.
If you plan on going bigger then 33s, you'd be better off going straight to 4.88s with the automatic trans.
>>
>>14180264
Stay off the land regardless. If its a public road/unmaintained road/unassumed road, then it is acceptable for use in most cases. If there is already a trail and no signage, go on it at your own risk and stay on the trail. Don't be a dick and go blazing your own trail and tearing up someones property.
>>

When it comes to muddy/rocky trails it goes pretty well, better than your average AWD SUV, forester, etc. In terms of actual rock crawling its not awful, but by no means good. That's probably because I'm a huge faggot and I'm afraid to destroy a new car. We won't really know if it's easily modified as there's no aftermarket. The exception being a few lift kits at <2".

>>
>>14183858
Quite the contrary. The armchair offroaders are the ones defending their cheap IFS DDs that they don't even wheel by saying they're just as good as or better than SFA.

Then they'll defend their point by comparing travel between a $100k 2WD IFS prerunner and a stock $3k SFA shitbox, as if the travel they get out of their stock torsion bar IFS is comparable to that of the prerunner or even has the remote potential to be.

>>14183594
Lack of aftermarket mods that support a vehicles intended purpose generally implies it's not easily modified.

You can buy bolt on coilover conversion kits for 80s chevy trucks. There's obviously more market for 3-4" lifts for a new Jeep. So if you can't buy them, there's probably good reason for it.

Depends on your definition of light trails.

You may be able to get by with just a cheapo LSD for the rear and 30s all around on stock height.

The best way to go about modifying is to 'modify by necessity'

Take it where you take it as it is now, and see where your weak points are, are you bottoming out a lot, have traction issues etc?

First investment would be a hi-lift jack/ other recovery equipment while you're still figuring out what you need exactly, and then eventually it wouldn't hurt to have a winch, but a hi-lift does a winches job just fine, albiet much slower.

It happens when a shitty car company improperly designs a vehicle with a SFA, then refuses to amend their awful engineering despite multiple high-speed accidents.

There are plenty of vehicles that use SFA and don't suffer from this problem nearly the way shitty Chrysler products do. Other companies properly design their tie rods, stabilizers, etc. to work under a variety of conditions, whereas Chrysler does not.

It's not a meme unless you're SO inbred and poor that you don't even know how your own shitty vehicle works.

well lets see.. it has 32 splines, 1.6" diameter, and wait for it.. a 9" ring gear.

go look up specs yourself you retarded ape

a stock jk with chromoly shafts will handle 35s all fucking day long on actual challenging trails.

your shitty jap soccer mom suv will highside just getting the the first obstacle. they arent made for offroad.. neither are stock jks or any stock suv for that matter but they are definitely more capable. it's not a debate you're just a fucking no experience idiot.
>>
>>14185906
Not the new 44's in the JK.
>>
>>14185936
A stock JK isn't made for off road? A stock Land Cruiser or Pajero isn't made for off road? Better tell all those people driving them off road, then.
>>
>>14185906
I understand that perfectly, as I've had my share of Cruisers and Pajeros. This is on reference to the Rav anon claiming his shitbox is more durable than a Wrangler.

The only downside to the Cruiser axles is the earlier 8mm floating axle locating studs were a bit of a potential weak point. Toyota however rectified that with the 100 series and the later coil cab 70 series with 10mm studs.
>>
>>14185936
>9=8.9
Top lel.
And the 9.5", 33.5mm and 31 spline rear end under the back of my Paj is more than adequate.
>>
>>14185982
The biggest issue with the D44 and other axles Jeep likes to use are the weak shit axle housings. That's why the Pajero II suspension was able to do duty in light duty CoE trucks.

>>
>>14186038
Yet you have weaker shafts.
a 3/4 axle is weak in general for actual enthusiast level offroading. You will always have to take steps to help them.

I mean I'm pretty sure you consider camping trails offroading so it's not like you even need a strong axle in the first place.

pic related is jk on factory non-trussed axles with chromo shafts and 35s seems pretty capable to me. enjoy your fire roads.
>>
>>14186049
>Yet you have weaker shafts.
But, I don't. Cool projection, though.
>>
>>14186064
lower spline and smaller diameter, so yes you do.
>projection
you must not know what that word means.

you think stock suvs are "offroad" capable so I can only assume that you're definition of offroad is fire roads and camping trails because thats about all stock suvs are good for.

It's a 5ton, not a duece. It's got a cummins cta(8.3 single turbo), a 5 speed allison with a 2 speed transfer case. has 14r20 michellin xzl tires(22ply, 50 inches tall). 6.72 axle gears, etc.
It's never needed low gear, occasionally I will pop the front axle in though.

See I really don't know shit about the duece. This is not a duece, it is a 1994 or 95 am general m923a2. It is not a multi fuel engine, it is not a manual transmission, etc
Shit is heavily reliant on it's air system. Without air you don't have a truck.
It does share driveline parts with a huge amount of semis however. Transmission is Allison 5 speed, medium duty. Engine is an 8.3 cta(medium duty again). Parts are easier to find.

The most fun I've had offroad was my friend launching his rusty little Zook on tractor tires up a slippery super steep trailhead, and ending up smacking the bumper into a sapling so hard that it locked the steering (pushed into the front tire). After unsuccessfully trying to bend it back using a come along strapped to an F250, he ended up taking an angle grinder to that corner of the bumper and was all set. I really wish I had an old 4x4 beater like that and 60 wooded acres bordering state land to goof around on.

>>
>>14193685

>>
>>14193690
ARB or Yukon zip locker. Selectable is best for a daily driver.
>>
>>14193690
For the rear I'd go with a Detroit locker, they are very quiet and unlock on the street when you make turns, unless you mash it. For the front I'd go selectable like an ARB or E-locker so you could unlock the front to help with steering in the rocks.
>>
>>14193811
A selectable isn't needed in the rear, even on a daily driver. Just have to get used to it. No point in wasting the money when you can install one in the front

i have a third gen 4runner. it doesnt have the locker which sucks, but ive still outperformed a bone stock 2013 2 door wrangler sahara offroad. ive pulled a bronco, a ranger, a mid 200's F150, and a 2015 sierra out of the mud. i have a 3 inch lift and33's, but other than that its stock. its great offroad. the locker would be a big plus though. if you don't plan on doing anything too extreme, not having lockers is fine and you can always retrofit some.
>>
>>14193957
A lot of it comes down to the drivers skill. I've seen open/open jeeps go up the same obstacle with more ease then a rubicon with front and rear lockers engaged.

Haha you guys are pretty narrow-minded when offroading. It can literally be anything that is not on a paved surface.

Yes, solid axles are ideal for vehicles that have to navigate wildly un-level terrain, but only about half of vehicles built for prerunning use solid axles. IFS is just as useful for that sport, which is also legitimate off-roading, except they're going through terrain at ~40+ mph. It can absorb terrain better at high speeds, and can offer slightly higher ground clearance than most solid axles with the same tire size.
