thinking about getting this for about $400, i get get a new Fel-Pro head gaskets for about $40. My father in-law has a fullshop at his place and is willing to help me replace it. do you think this is a good idea /o/? i just into offroad

>>
I'd say get it if $400 isn't a big investment to you, and you're also aware that it may have large issues with the gearbox, and the engine may have been damaged from the overheating... also be ready for the fact that it might end up being an oversized paperweight quicker than you'd like it to

i can get a pulled working engine and tranny for around $500 at my local yard, so with about a $1000 at-worst-case, do you think it is worth it vin bro?

Thats nearly more of best-case scenario in my humble opinion.

First of; gearbox issue is unidentified. No mention of how it performs otherwise, if it has happened before or what he had to do to get it out.

Second; very few pictures, but from what I can see it either has a bent door, or the doorframe itself has suffered structural damage. Headlights are glazed as fuck and in dire need of a polish, and from the shitty photo the tires look bald. Combined they make me think that this has been a beater, and not one driven by anyone with mechanical sense. Most likely it will have dying brakes, worn bearings, trash all over, worn suspension and maybe even some more "hidden" damage...

This all comes down to how much you're willing to put into it both time and moneywise, and what you'll be using it for... as a pure offroader where you have really no demands for working AC, interior in nice condition and preferrably undamaged then it would probably suffice with a new engine and gearbox, but I would be damned desperate to consider this as a vehicle I'd depend on to actually get me anywhere I need to be
>>
So you have the money, access, help, and I'm assuming know how to change out an engine and tranny....yet, you're on here asking whether or not you should buy it?

Being one of the mightiest tripfags on /o/ can i please summon you powers to help me find somthing to fuck around with via my crigslist?

https://tulsa.craigslist.org/search/cta

what i "want" is somthing to replace my ralliart, thats 4x4/ dad mobile, kiddo on the way and wife wants me to get rid of it.

>>14166479
i just don't like pulling the trigger on something that might cost me 3 times the amount i got it for. I have the money to go get something new, but i rather have something i can work on and replace shit without going crazy.

You don't have money or you wouldn't even consider a thrashed exploder. It's okay we're not all well off. What's the actual budget for a new ride. Remember you're anonymous.

Navigating US-listings is a goddamned minefield for me, I have no clue what value the individual cars hold in their conditions over there...

What is your budget? A good tip I'll give is that using your DD as an offroader while also on a bit of a tight budget can very quickly end in a catastrophe

How do you feel about these? Too expensive?

I think if you're just looking for something to bash around in offroad, something like this might be a slightly safer bet (assuming minimal funds):

A tad more money but looks pretty decent for the miles:

My budget is around 30k but I just got my wife a 06 9-2x aero that she has wanted for like 5 years and put about 10k into a all n all. I looked at a 11 JF cruiser for 17 today at a local lot and it felt amazing. I only have around 5k to thrown down right now without getting a loan and don't feel like getting into another loan due to us just buying our first house. I rather get the most bang for my buck and fixing/upgrading as much as I can. Baby is arriving 4th of July and just need to have something by then if full working order.

Wife said no to a purchase, budget is 30k. have 5k. Posted $>1k heap. Something is off here
>>
>>14166600
That much huh? Then we can go a bit higher... just look around the listings and find something you like. On a general basis there is very little to save on buying something with mechanical damage or similar, as you never know what else is wrong or just how extensive the damage is

With that budget I'd look around for something like the Explorer in age and configuration, but in a much, much better condition for maybe $10 000 or similar
>>
>>14166621
But if you just want to spend $5000 at the max... find something in an OK-condition for about $3000 that is currenly running without any dire faults, and keep the $2000 for the eventual shit that will probably come up at the worst time possible, or to replace stuff like tires, oil, brakes and similar things that fuckheads typically neglect

I have around 6 months to replace my ralliart. I want to spend as little as possible on a 4x4 small suv. I have 24 hour access to a shop and experienced father in law that will help me with anything I need. Rather then spending 30k over 3-5 years I want to spend the 5k I have right now to buy something flat out. Again I have around 6 months to have the small SUV I want in full working order. I could just be a nigga or a kid and go get a new car but I want to get the most bang for my buck.

Thanks for your help man, I'll throw back on my trip when I find somthing.

Oh well then, that opens a ton of doors. Check this thing out.

https://fortsmith.craigslist.org/cto/5374779890.html

Yes somewhat overpriced for the miles, but it is completely and totally caught up on all maintenance and all the common wear items these get. I cringe a bit at using Moog parts for the front end instead of OEM Toyota, but it's not the end of the world. You'd be ready to hit the trail with all the knuckle busting already done. Considering it already has a decent quality lift and A/T tires on it, I'd say that's less than you'd spend doing all of that yourself, not even counting your time.

3rd gen 4Runners are super solid trucks, I'm not unbiased however as I own one.

Mine's been a trooper for the 3 years I've owned it, I bought it in good condition but needing just about every single thing that guy has listed there, except my front end is all original aside from front control arm bushings, so his list makes me feel comfy in recommending it. The only time it's given me any trouble was when a fuel injector quit on me, I hobbled over to my gf's parents' on 5 cylinders and replaced it, $50 for a new made in Japan injector, not too bad.

I get 20 mpg just about every single tank of mostly highway driving with my V6/auto combination, the cargo area is huge and the roll down window is awesome if you have dogs or just like having a fresh breeze through the truck (moonroof+ rear window open is awesome and quiet on the highway). Parts are as easy and as cheap to find as for just about any domestic, although I never actually buy crap from Autozone, it's good to know that it's there if I'm in a pinch.

In the minuses I'd call the driving position a tad claustrophobic (like being in a compact pickup truck) with the windshield close to your face and it's pretty narrow. It doesn't ride the greatest, as it's pretty light (3750lb) but has these big wheels and tires from the factory and all that ground clearance. It's also pretty prone to drivetrain and wheel/tire balancing vibrations, guys go crazy getting a proper balance on the factory wheels (need a special lug-centric adapter to be used, ideally).

Like I said, I really like mine, it's 20 years old but I've driven it all over on long road trips without issue.
