>but don't they break a lot and parts are expensive?
OEM parts are expensive. Aftermarket is no more expensive than anything else, and there's only a few things that going OEM is actually better for (MAF sensors come to mind)
The shit breaking a lot applies mainly to newer ones like their stupid pigfat turbo V8s, BMW regularly won engine of the year in that era.
if you want specifics I know most of the widespread problems of the series and can list them, they're all pretty minor

Unless you get an Aero (good luck for <$8k), the standard Saabaru really isn't that fast
>>
>>14162186
This guy knows what's up. Outback XTs are the last underrated Subaru platforms since people have been exploiting the LGTs. Cheap to pick up and mod
>>

I like this. What breaks? Can I make it fast?
>>
>>14162246
Buddy of mine in college has one of these. Came with 250bhp from the factory, with the AWD it's pretty quick- and sleeper status too. Look for an 05/06, they have the same short block as an STI. The XT (turbo model) came with an LSD in the rear, and with a 5mt optional

They can make good power with a few mods (intake, intercooler, maybe turbo), just keep an eye on the tunes since the off the shelf tunes are pretty shit
>>
>>14162220
M8 theyre like 11k for 05s
>>
>>14162289
LGTs are around that much, not the OBXTs. I see the OBXTs go for 7-9k around here, given they're higher mileage but typically not abused

>>14162246
-Dual mass flywheel, it's easy enough to convert it to a solid one, just make sure you get the right clutch for it. It's different.

-Turbo oil feed banjo bolt filter- remove it, they get clogged and kill the turbo.

-Uppipe catalytic converter- they like to grenade and send their guts into the turbo, either take it off and gut it or get a new one. However, you'll need a cobb accessport/tune for any aftermarket uppipe or downpipe, it reks your engine with lean surges and boost creep.

-Clutch hose- easy enough, for some reason they routed it to go right next to the turbo to go around the transmission-firewall brace instead of the other side of the brace, so it gets cooked and acts as a one way valve and makes your clutch slip.

-Intercooler- even bone stock the original intercooler isn't really enough. They run hot. A better one should be one of the first things you do.

Plenty of people have done LGTs/OBXTs with just an accessport, catless downpipe+uppipe, tune, and an intercooler and made over 300whp. Bretty gud. They're already pretty competent stock with the 5 speed.

>>14162283
The XT also has 4.444 final drive over the LGT's 4.11, so it should accelerate a bit faster too.

Ask if VANOS has been rebuilt.
Ask if cooling system has been redone.
Both of these need to have been done with non-OEM parts so the problems don't arise again. This looks like it was owned by an "enthusiast" so both have probably been done.
Then you're good mang.

>>
>>14162396
Why the tarp on the ground?
>>
>>14162404
It was probably overkill, but for rust prevention. Since this one already has a bunch of surface rust in the wheel wells, I figured I'd invest the $30 in a tarp in the hopes it would slow/prevent rust underneath for the few months it'd be sitting
>>
>>14162421
Hmmm o never really thought to do that before, does it actually work?
>>
>>14162446
No idea. We'll see when I start working on it haha. I remembered reading about it somewhere online, and figured I'd give it a shot, esp since the last car stored in that spot had most of the rocker panels rust away after the years it sat there.

-AWD, turbo, suspension, FANTASTIC aftermarket parts

riddled with electrical gremlins and issues I had literally never heard of until I owned a 2000's volvo.

Fantastic car, but seriously be prepared to research issues and ask yourself what in the actual fuck? how can A possibly cause B? or what the hell even is this failed part?

Just get a Volvo Mechanic to check it out if your unfamiliar.

My Volvo ended it's life with a catastrophic power steering / steering column failure. Again a wtf kind of problem is that...

luckily I got ran over on the highway going 70mph. A jeep blindspotted me and ran over the entire front end. Literally entire front end from mirrors up. Car still drove to my destination afterwards, but that sealed the deal.

thing was a tank. A strange, awkward problem, electrical gremlin filled tank that I loved
>>
>>14162610
I love it. Only problem is that it's kind of a quirky motor and it does some weird shit and it needs stronger rods and pistons to make more than like 20 hp more than stock safely. I'm probably going to be doing that in the spring (I have intake and turbo back exhaust right now, getting it tuned next month)
>>
>>14162537
I texted that guy and he never responded. Price is kinda high for a 2005. Be sure you make sure the awd actually works, is a problem in the 05s
>>
I have the same problem as OP except my budget is only 5k and I'm willing to do a bit of wrenching myself but not too much. Any recommendations?

Everyone here keeps saying they are unreliable and expensive to fix though.is that really true or just a meme

Also thanks
>>
>>14162849
According to /o/ every car is expensive to fix. here's a pro tip. The parts all run roughly the same from all makes/models/brands, it's the labor that has huge differences.
>>
>>14162863
Thanks a lot
Good night m8
>>
>>14162863
to add on to this

it's usually the dealership labor that is a big difference

good experienced local guys will fix anything for half the price of the cheapest stealership, if you've got a reliable local mechanic it doesn't matter.
>>
>>14162246
It's pretty much a fatter WRX.
>>
>>14162951
And more comfortable, more practical, not a rattlebox, has no boyracer/fuccboi/monster energy/vape stigma, less attention from cops, etc. Basically a WRX without any of its downsides.
>>
>>14162959
I wouldn't say it has no downsides. Biggest one that comes to me is it definitely handles much more like a wagon than the comparable WRX/STI hatch, especially the Outback version
>>
>>14162103

That would be me. '05 OBXT Limited 5spd purchased with 196k miles and 1 owner. Guy told me he went into the local Subaru dealership (about 40 miles from my house) and ticked off every option box. Paint is a little bit scuffed up in a few areas from his kids, but the interior is gorgeous and overall a very good car for $4500. I put a new clutch master cylinder in it and she's been a joy ever since.
>>
>>14168642
Never knew about the potential of these. How are the autotragics and aftermarket?
>>
>>14162074
How much more expensive is it to insure a WRX compared to something "normal"? Just curious.
>>
>>14168660
Only other Outback of this gen that I've driven was an auto AND 2.5i so I'm probably not the best to cast judgement. It seemed like a capable car, but obviously there's no top end like in an XT. For me unless I'm on the track auto/flappy paddles will never be as fun as rowing your own gears.

>aftermarket
Depends on your style. Are you talking go fast or look fast? There's plenty in the way of go fast since the EJ255 in the OBXT is very similar to that of the WRX and and the EJ257 of the STi. AVOturboworld makes an FMIC that lets you keep your fogs so that and a Cobb Accessport are probably my next endeavors. Looking fast is a different story. The OBXT is not going to make the Honda kids want to race you between lights and I'm totally okay with that.
>>
>>14168750
I should've been more specific. Never cared too much for doing extensive tuning, at the very least have an option of springs/coilovers/, bars, and exhaust and such.
>>
>>14168761
Oh, all of the suspension stuff I've looked for either exists specifically for this model or is designed for a model that will work with the OBXT (like the LGT Wagon). Exhaust and stuff also exists. I'm particularly impressed with the offering from Nameless https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mph103g8CzE
