You can. But you can't just dump the clutch from a complete stop in 2nd gear. Most vehicles can take off in second gear, but you have to let off the clutch very slowly and the engine dogs way down and almost stalls. She just lets off the clutch very quickly and it stalls.

You can see the shifter is pulled down, and that would be Reverse, 2nd, 4th, or 6th.

I worked at the dealership that serviced that ATS and it had a vacuum line issue when the brake was pressed. Caused it to bog down on slight throttle straight after, enough to make it stall 1 in 5 times. You asked a genuine question OP so here's a genuine answer:
The car looked like it stalled by itself (ECU fault?) but it was at a real random time. She was in 2nd, going maybe 5 - 10mph and rode the clutch because she was prepared to stop for traffic in front. Traffic moved ahead and she rode the clutch a little and the engine cut out.

She did not try to go from a standing start in 2nd gear.

She had to hit the start button to get the engine to fire and this is where (in my opinion) the dealership would have decided to give money back, in that she was ROLLING and could not ride the clutch to JUMP START the car. At that speed it's possible to do it in 2nd with enough momentum.

She seemed genuine and it does look like a terminal fault with the car if that happened more than a few times.

I frequently do that if I'm coming to a stop at a light and then it suddenly changes to green and my car doesn't stall. Even in a 2.0 liter turbo you should also be able to get it moving in 2nd gear without any issues.

The constantly told me it was my fault and I was probably "racing it."
