The newest Miata is still a weekend drive car, better suited for lower speeds and top-down weather. This is supported by literally everything I've read about it from professional critics and reviewers. I haven't had the chance to drive one. I think it looks great.

The Toyobaru is fun as hell to drive, funner than the older Miatas. It's got a much better daily capability than the Miata, and definitely holds it own at higher speeds. It's a drift/track toy with the capability to be a daily driver for a single person or a young married couple with no kids. Again, I've heard this echoed by tons of professional reviews and critics. I also think the Toyobaru looks a lot better than the Miata. I've never heard anything positive said about the looks of a Miata by anyone, but when I used to ride around with my buddy in his Toyobaru all the time he got compliments about its looks frequently.

The Miata only meaningfully outperforms (no one is going to notice .3 or .5 seconds real world unless its a race, but 1.2 or 1.5 seconds is kind of big) the Toyobaru when it's got over $3,000 in better brakes, tires, suspension, and an LSD, making up for the price advantage the Miata has (Club is $33k with the brake kit, the only package that sees the meaningful performance advantage).

If I wanted a weekend driving toy for fair weather, I'll save $22-27,000 dollars and buy a sport bike. If I wanted a new car that I could get some actual DD use out of but still have fun with it in my local Auto-X or some of the twistier roads around here, I'd get the Toyobaru.
