What does /o/ think of the 300zx?

I'm thinking of getting one; only 9k to work with though. I assume that should be ok

I've found some decent 300zx's around me suprisingly.

Okay, makes sense but what about the LS swap? that is usually guaranteed to set people off.

NA Z32 has the same power to weight ratio as the Z31 Turbo. The NA Z31 is trash.

Should be able to buy a nice TT Z32 with that much.

The later model turbo bodies had a very nice facelift, doesn't take much to make them look awesome.

>>14112500
The Z31 Turbo has no intercooler and a small turbo with 4-6 pounds of boost. Doesn't take much to upgrade that, and the VG30 will easily run upwards of 350 HP on stock internals.
>>
>>14113071
So you need to add or replace the turbos, intercoolers, manifolds, and probably fuel system and electronics. What exactly do you keep?

pain in the ass to work in but relatively simple

for fuck sakes give them a good check and bring a car stethoscope they are notorious for being oil starved by previous owners
>>
The VG30DE(TT) is a fickle bitch of a motor. Put a good bit of money aside for a rebuild. It's an expensive motor to work on even if you do the work yourself. The timing belt/spark plugs are every 60k. The injectors changed designs from late 93 onward. All years are prone to failure, it's just a matter of time, but the newer style have longer filters and corrosion resistant connectors. You can shave the plenum so you don't have to remove it to change them. The plastics in the engine bay snap more frequently than anything I've ever seen.

The mk3 supra has fewer points of failure with the 7mgte and is less of a chore to work on even though the work it needs out the door (head gasket, deeper headbolts) is more expensive out the door. Once the headg gasket and bolts are taken care of, you can make power on the 7mgte more easily by just upgrading the cooling system and fuel delivery. You can push 400-500 horsepower on the stock components. Check the forums.
>>
>>14113128
This. Also, RX-7 Turbo II is good for 400-500 horsepower as well if you drill the tension bolt holes through for studs. Do them one at a time in proper torque order and you don't even have to open the engine.
>>
>>14113173
That's without porting?
>>
>>14113104
The block and chassis
>>
>>14113185
Porting is basically a cam. Port volume gives you "lift" and geometry gives you duration. You can make 400 HP on a 13B without porting the same way you can make 400 HP on a 7M without a cam. Just turn the boost up.
>>
>>14113125
This. Take it to a shop in your area that specializes in these cars.
They are great cars as long as you buy one that was taken care of and you stay on top of maintenance.
>>
pigfat
>>
It will take all of your 9k but it's a damn fine underrated car.
>>
One more question from OP:

Should I get the 2+2 or the normal coupe?
The extra seats do seem convenient.
>>
>>14112213

>lion of judah...
>>
>>14114500
The seats in the 2+2 are for children. No full grown person can fit in them.
>>
>>14114500
Get a 2+0 TT and remember if you are in the states 2+2s did not come turbod.
>>
>>14112255
Looks like someone's trying to make a forced meme.

By any chance, are you that guy who ran around shouting "GROUP HUG" on every /x/ thread back in 2008?
>>
>>14112160
They are nice cars, but ones in decent condition are overpriced on the market. If you get the Twin Turbo one, then don't upgrade anything before first upgrading the internals. Pistons, rods, and crank. The stock ones aren't made to handle much modifications. Especially under more boost.

The Manual transmissions are decent, but cannot hold a lot of modifications either. I would at least upgrade the input shaft before going over 350 rwhp. But, the automatics are surprisingly well durable.

The interior is as Spartan class as the 90's Mustangs. Which is to be expected for any 90's Japanese sports car. But, the interior holds up well and doesn't rattle unless you get a different transmission. Then it will produce a lot of noise through the transmission tunnel, as the stock trans are all pretty quiet in comparison to other transmissions.

But, other than that, if you do decide on getting a Z32, you'll have a fun car and probably love it.
>>
>>14116096
The rods and crank are already forged and the rods have been proven to last over 550whp. I still recommend switching them if you rebuild it to Lighter forged rods but if you do not plan on going over 450-500whp you will be fine. I always liked the interior on the Zs, I would not compare it to the 90s mustangs at all.
>>
>>14116118
When you go over 350 rwhp on the stock internals, while the rods and crank can withstand right around 500-520 rwhp, the life of the rods will be halved. Sure, you can get a good couple of years off them at that hp range, but if you're already getting dished forged pistons, I would go ahead and do the rods and crank while its apart. Also, when the stock rods do end up throwing, it most likely will bend the crank. It tends to happen.

And I would say the Z32 interiors are damn near on par with the 94-04 Mustang interiors when it comes to quality. Though, I've heard that the convertible Z32 interiors don't rattle as much as the convertible 94-04 Mustang interiors.
>>
>>14116136
>convertible Z32
Oh god, please no. Has a more disgusting vehicle ever been built?
>>
>>14116136
I have read a lot of people just putting in ARP bolts and running that for years but I agree if you have it out might as well switch to eagle rods at the least. I suppose you could even cryo treat the stock rods if you need a cheaper option. My problem with stock rods is the weight.
I would say the Z interior is much nice then my friends 90s mustang and my other friends 04 termi interior.
>>
>>14113214
What kind of periodic maintenance do you recommend if I were to get one?

Also what's your opinion on low mileage low cost z32s off of Japanese auctions? Next year importing a decent '91 for ~10-15k seems doable

Yeah, but those seats in a Terminator. My god, I love those seats so much. Leather with alcantara inserts. The leather looks great and holds up very well. The alcantara center inserts prevents from shitty looking cracked leather and doesn't get blistering hot or ice burn cold in extreme temperatures. And most importantly, the driver seat's lumbar, side bolsters and thigh bolsters are fully adjustable to fit you like a glove and keep you planted better than any Recaro, Bride, or Corbeau seats that I have ever sat it.

God I love the Terminator seats.

Stock with your maintenance intervals (like the 60k and 120k kit) keep up with oil changes (pretty much every Z shop I have spoken to says do 3k intervals if its a TT) and if you read the forums a lot of guys say to run 15-40 or something similar instead of 10-30/40. Join some forums (pic related)
>>
>>14116176
I have no personal experience with importing sorry, I personally would rather buy one local.

>>14116178
I guess it's all preference, I think my Z32 leather seats are nice then my buddies Termi seats.
>>
>>14116176
Well, first you need to check out the importer you are looking to purchase from. A lot of JDM cars are sketchy due to insurance fraud, registration fraud, odometer fraud, and identification plate fraud over in Japan. Just google reviews of the import company/site you are looking at buying from and you should find a lot of reviews.

But, if you go the route of JDM import, you'll have a rare car that you won't see many people driving around. You'll get a lot of lookers and pictures taken of your car. And a lot of conversations from strangers.

And most importantly, you'll probably love the shit out of it. Just be warned, don't go through a drive through alone.
>>
>>14116209
Actually ran into a guy with a RHD supra and hated it, was selling it to buy a LHD one.
>>
>>14116209
The importer I'm looking at is a site called jdmlegends. They mostly do restorations but seem on top of importing as well, recently getting a Fairlady 200 ZR-II. They good reviews all around as well
>>
>>14116228
Probably couldn't get used to doing everything with opposite hands.

>>14116246
That's good to hear. I would do more research on the importer you plan on buying from than on the car itself. If the car is already in the states and you can go physically see it, then that's even better.
>>
>>14116335
Just said everything was a pain like drive throughs etc and was sick of people stopping him everywhere he went because RHD. I think it would be cool to have a RHD Z but I don't think I ever would. Like you said the while other hand thing.

Anyone know of any good Z shops in or around Las Vegas?
>>
>>14112160
Hey guys, similar question.
I'm looking at a 300ZX from a private seller, 64k original miles, ugly ass color.
It's only 5,900 but I think I might be able to talk him down to 5,500.
Assuming all goes well, would it be worth my while to buy it, slap a new coat of paint on it, and try to flip it for 8-9k?
Physically it looks in good condition, just needs new paint. Isn't leather but is manual.
T-tops, N/A model. It's 4+ hours away so I haven't gone to look at the engine status yet, I just need an echo chamber to bounce ideas back in.
>>
>>14117094
here's a pic of it since i'm autistic
>>
>>14117094
Although its pretty low miles, its also an N/A so it may be a little tougher to resale. Is it a 2+0 or 2+2?
>>
>>14117107
2+0
and you have to realize I live in anti-fun carville, 5k for a trashed 300zx is the norm.
>>
>>14117094
N/A just walk away. You won't make enough of a profit if any. If the TTs are going for a decent amount in your area (say 10k+) you could buy a TT engine and swap it and maybe make a profit but IMO just walk away.
>>
>>14117127
Well around here (Las Vegas) you could probably get like $7k if it does get the new paint. The t-tops and milage helps a lot. The cloth interior is down to taste, but I prefer leather. Your market seems very different from mine

local area, 25 miles radius had two for 16k each, i changed to 500 to get this. (I live in Texas)

Okay so how much of a "fun" car would it be, assuming I'm looking at tuning it.
>>
>>14117145
>>14117151
I'm in New Mexico, I do not see a lot around here but when I picked up my TT I spent 4,500 with 118k on the odo paint wasn't terrible but not great and had a small quarter panel dent. I know in some areas though they can go for 10-12k easy. In some areas the slick tops are more desirable so keep that in mind

100 mile radius for comparison
>>
>>14112160
great but keep in mind these were not sports cars or even sporty cars. They were grand tourers IE get from point A to point B in style and maybe push it on the highway every so often .
remember this if you are going to pull the trigger one one of these. That is absolutely no modifications and auto and na are arguably preferabble to TT. This will help you save your time and money and avoid the millenial "tuner" scene who have started noticing these

I would also consider the 2+2 as it has more space for long road trips .
