You're probably good replacing one. The only reason I can think of replacing all four at once is so the uneven replacement times don't get out of hand and you eventually have tires with all different levels of wear being driven on at the same time.

Patch the tire. Though he's not bullshitting about a full replacement on an AWD. Having different treads will fuck the differentials

All your tires have to be within something like 3/32" or you can fuck up your differential. Find out what the tire variance can be for your car and see if it's within tolerance for a new one. If it's outside of tolerance, you may be able to find a place that shaves tires to bring the tread down.
Best case scenario is to repair your "brand new" 20k mile tire.

Permanent AWD cars require the tires to have identical wear, and be the same size/brand, or the differentials can become damaged.

Now, MOST of the current "awd" cars are 100% FWD biased and the rear tires only get torque transferred when the front slips, which happens almost never during normal driving.
So in that case, you can get away with mismatched tread.
