I get my permit at 15 (drive with a parent, no passengers) and full license at 16 (no parental supervision, allowed to have passengers).

It was free, minus like 20 bucks at the DMV for them to print the license.
>>
>>14057623
Don't worry about it. As long as the weather doesn't suck, highway driving is so easy. Also pay attention to signs telling you where to go. If you miss an exit, don't panic. Go to the next one and turn around.

>>14057618
Just don't be nervous. Driving a car is easy. Keep a good speed, signal for a reasonable distance before you turn or change lanes, and make sure you are checking your mirrors and blind spots every so often, even if you aren't changing lanes.

Lots of people get points off for not checking mirrors and blind spots occaisionally. Like every 30sec or a little more, just glance at em.

When you first start off, if you have to cross a yellow line where people may walk, start slowly and look both ways for people walking.

I've seen people at my local "driving test place" speed right off from the start, ignoring the possibility of people who may be walking.

Instant fail.
>>
>>14057636
>driving with an experienced driver for 6months
That is basically what a permit is. You can only drive with a licensed driver over 18 in the car. You can get the permit as soon as you turn 15 if you are taking Driver's Ed classes. I think you have to hold a permit for at least 3 or 6 months (and turn 16) before you get test for your license. The rules change if you are over 18 though, it gets much easier in most states. No Driver's Ed classes required if you are over 18. I think you just take the written test for a permit, hold that for 3mos, and can go test for your license after that.

There are lots of restrictions in most states for drivers under 18. Like a year or two after I got my license, they started passing all these laws. There is one that says for the first year you have your license, you can only have 1 passenger under 18 in the car. And you aren't supposed to drive after 11pm or some bullshit. I don't remember. I got my license before most of those laws were passed and it was a long time ago.
>>
>>14057678
thats fucking bullshit
>>
Got license at like 21 because nobody in my family has a fully legal car. Got my first car in early 2014 when I was 25. Now I have four cars with my name on the title. Lel
>>
>>14057653
I have heard that a few states will allow 14-15 year old kids to get a restricted license. It allows them to drive to school, work, and church. It was some midwest state. 14 is so young though looking back. So is 15. But I never had any problems driving at 15-16. No tickets or accidents. I also paid my own insurance and everything while working a shitty retail job, so any crashes or tickets woulda fucked with me more than lots of the rich kids.
>>
>>14057646
Weather will 100% be shit and it wont be highway driving all the way, lots of between mountains shit with narrow roads and lots and lots of turns. What I'm most scared of is overtaking since my car is slow.

I fucked up waiting so long though, insurance is a bitch because they only care about how long you've had a license, not how long you've been driving

Fucking lmao. Some 14 year olds look like legit 9 year olds. Imagine seeing one of those kids driving a car.
>>
>>14057678
>>14057688
Idk if it's the same thing, but when taking the test, you do have to be aware of cross walks and white lines.

If there is a stop sign but you can't clearly see the intersection without going past the sign and lines a little, you better stop at the line and then start to creep slowly until you can see.
>>
>>14057694
If you get hit by snow or better rain, just pull over if you don't feel safe. Don't risk it, especially being so new. You don't want to learn about understeer and oversteer on a snowy mountain road a month after you got your license.

Also, like a month or two after I got my license when I was 16, we got the first big snow. My mom actually told me to go take my car to a nearby parking lot and spin it around a little bit. Just to learn how the car reacts in snow.

He most definitely will spin when he encounters snow for the first time. It's part of the learning experience. Just don't brake... and hope you don't hit somebody, but if you can steer well, you probably won't.

That's easy to say before you start driving. It depends on your personality. Some kids drive cautiously and do the speed limit their entire life, some kids drive recklessly and total their cars and kill themselves, and the rest of the few drive smart and defensively and can drive at whatever speed they know they can handle. But... you will learn when you start driving. What's the fastest you've ever drove?

Dont set a max speed... adjust your speed according to the conditions

There are days where the road is a perfect scraped ice, temperatures are at their normal -15 to -20c where I can do my normal speed of about 88 in the 80-zone and be perfectly safe, and days where I'll have to do 40kph on the same road because my grip and possibly visibility are just that much impaired

There's barely any manual cars on the road in the US. It would be a hassle just trying to find a car to take the test in if it had to be a manual trans.

But, I had been driving for years before that.

On the way home from school around age 12 my mom would let me drive the last 2 miles.
And around age 13-14 she would send me on errands to the store or to get food (2-4 miles round trip)
So by 16 I had already been driving alone for at least 2 years.
>>
>>14057886
What country are you from?

>>14057875
I think most states in the US, if you are over 18, you don't have to take any classes for a regular DL. You take a written test for your permit (driving with a licensed person in the car) and then you hold the permit for something like 3-6 months. Then you can go back and take the road test for your actual DL.

The classes are normally only required if you are under 18.
>>
>>14057893
Reminds me of my 13 year old friend that did the same but saw a cop one day, shat his pants and tried to turn around and go back before he saw him, then reversed into a ditch in front of him. Turns out the cop was a friend of his father and knew all along and wasn't gonna stop him at all.

>>
>>14057899
coming from texas. At 18 i took a online class which gave me my required 6 hours of in class learning and my test. Then did a driven test. I had maybe 8 hours of driving experience. They make it way too easy to get a license....I made a lot of stupid mistakes and had a lot of close calls due to no experience. And a minor fenser bender the first week that could have been avoided if i hadn't froze up. I wasn't at fault due to the other car coming into my lane after turning towards me at a 4 way. But i was still rolling and a quick swerve would have saved us both a lot of time.
>>
>>14057916
>>14057941
I somewhat agree. But either way, the best experience is just putting somebody on the road on their own. Like I said earlier, driving is all experience and awareness/judgement. Neither are going to be learned in a classroom. You can tell somebody what to do in bad situations as much as you want, but when they lock up the brakes in panic, none of that will matter. I don't know of too many people who crash their car within a month of getting their license, so another 20hrs behind the wheel in class isn't going to do much.

I think eventually states will try to go to 18 years old. This means we will have inexperienced 18 year olds on the road instead of 16 year olds. Maybe they should allow the permit at 16 but require people to hold it for 12-24 months. Idk. There's just so many shitty drivers on the road of any age. Making it harder to get a license as a teen won't do much to help.
>>
>>14057750
>I've got winter tires, I should be fine.

I had my 3rd driving lesson today and it went so bad that i felt like crying in the car. I'm 25 right now.

>stall at almost every stoplight
>have a hard time paying attention to the road because i'm just focusing on how to change gears and stuff
>instructor had to break a few times for me because i was about to hit a bicyclist
>stall the car in the corner because i slowed down so much that i had to change to first gear then i stalled it because i didn't give it enough throttle coming off the clutch
>can't break smoothly at stop lights

Also i confused my left for my right during it. I think i may be retarded. I hope i'm not one of those people who just cant learn to drive because of autism.
>>
>>14058076

16. Passed drivers exam on first try, easy as fuck but almost got an automatic fail because I was supposed to be carrying a pink slip/permit thing that I got at the DMV and was supposed to carry with me while I was testing, but nobody at the DMV actually told me this prior. Got it sorted out no problem though
So watch out for that shit
Also pro tip is scouting out the area before hand. My mom at the time had taken the test just a couple years before me, so I already knew the general route I'd be taking and all the "tricky" bits they lead you through. Right at the exit of my DMV there's 2 stop sign right next to each other, easily 3/4th of the drivers would confuse it for a single stop and get an automatic fail and told to go back. Hilarious shit

>>14058092

Clutches can be a bitch. Car I'm driving now has the worst faggot clutch ever made, ever. Catches super early and has a very short travel time where it catches, despite being a long press overall. Best tips i have are :
>Always concentrate on the road , look for roadmarkings , crosswalks
>Be confident , don't drive like a granny , DO NOT YIELD UNNECESSARILY
> at intersections , start slowing down way before reaching it , and stop , then go forward to the point of maximum visibility smoothly and in one go so that you're not messing around or sitting there for 5 millennia . Also merge with confidence
>Use blinkers/mirrors for every maneuver
>Don't panic , or at least don't show it
>Be prepared , always one step ahead of obstacles
>Listen to the instructions carefully , and confirm that you heard them

That's what seems to get most people .

19, got it today on my first try.

Considering that I live in Sweden, I'm pretty happy about that.

20. But only automatic.
Will have to retake the test once I've trashed my dad's car, trying to learn how to drive a manual.

Why is it so hard?

We have this in Iowa. When I was in high school a 14 year old on a school permit hit me in our school parking lot.
>>
I passed it a few months ago on the first try. I'm 18.

Honestly, just hope that your instructor is having a good day or is in a good mood.

I got my license at the age of 25.

Kansas has a system like that. It works fine up until the kids start treating their restricted as a full license.

What did he mean by this?

He was probably talking about how Kylo Ren killed his father Han Solo.

120 mandated hours is actually p. crazy, is it common to lie about it? I imagine it'd also cause a lot of learners to just drive on highways for ages rather than in actually environments where you actually learn something

23 for G1(must have cars owner or someone with full license in passenger seat)
24 for G2(for those under 19 can't drive past 11pm-5am)

Yeah you're actually much better than most current drivers.

Just be sure to show your racing ability to your instructors so they pass you faster and giving you the advanced license.

Got my permit at 14, and license at 15. Wasn't restricted at all.

You could also get employed at 14 in my state.

Both of these were for farm reasons.

Funny, i actually did this during driver's ed when i was 15. My instructor wanted to stop at a mini-mart for a drink and when we went to leave i put the fucker in drive n started pulling toward the front of the store.

Never did it before then, never done it since.

I got pulled doing 70 in a 40 the other day and the cop asked where I worked. I said Ups and he said his little brother works there then proceeded to ask if in had done a double shift, which I had (like 18 hours total in peak season). Afterwards he said to go home and get some rest, he doesn't want me to fall asleep at the wheel. Got a warning. It pays to be polite and friendly.

>>14057587
Yes. Get your learner's permit, drive for half a year with a parent, then you only have to take the written test.

>Glorious America where everyone gets a license and why the road is full of shit drivers
>>
>>14057587
16, but that was 14 years ago.
>>
>>14063685
You don't even have a driver's license, do you? You ride the bus.

You need to take an actual driving test to get your license. In every state in the US, no exceptions.

In most states if you're under 18 you need to take a written test to get your learner's permit, complete some kind of driver's ed (behind the wheel training), have your permit for at least *x* months and "log" at least *x* hours behind the wheel, then you can take the written test AND behind the wheel test.

If you're over 18 you can usually skip the driver's ed and permit and go straight to the written/driving test.
>>
Got my permit at 15, but license at 18. Didn't want to pay for insurance until I absolutely had to.
I remember when I took Driver's Ed, all I did was talk with my 60 year old instructor, and he passed me even though I couldn't park worth a damn. I've gotten better, but damn it pays to be nice to your instructor.
>>
Passed in July at 24.

Failed first time because I caused someone to brake after they came onto the roundabout behind me.
Second time I was way more relaxed. Worst part was the 40 minute test taking over an hour because the instructor's route took us through loads of road works.

>on way back to the test centre
>through residential estate
>stop go traffic for a mile or so
>all the way down all I can see in my rear view mirror is "HUMMER" and his fuck off grill
>when I'm turning off the main road he guns it past me
>dat glorious V8

How long was it between passing and getting your first car for you guys?

Whether you pass or not is dependent more on who is giving it than your actual performance.
>>
>>14063979
This. I was sweating bullets before taking the driven portion of my test because my instructor was the type who would get angry if you drove even 1 mile over or under the speed limit.

When I actually took the test, it was a nice old man with a mullet who was grading me, and the test consisted of driving around town for 3-4 minutes then parking. Guy didn't give a fuck.
>>
>>14064018
Yeah I failed twice, and now 5 years later I haven't been in as much as dinger of an accident.
First time I bumped the curb backing up and by bump I mean the tire grazed it.
Second time when I parallel parked I was a foot away.
Third time it was flawless and they couldn't fail me, I think part of it had to do with me paying extra money to go through a private school for the test.
