is an e36 the best shitbox?
>easily under 5k
>sexy exterior
>full leather interior with heated seats and power windows
>220+hp
>tons of aftermarket
>solid handling
how is this not the best choice for a poorfag such as myself? as far as i know the only reliability issue with beamers has been with the electronics, but 3 series avoided that hell by being mostly analog and non-vanos, so the only things needing attention was the water pump and bushings.

thoughts?

>>
E39, it actually looks good
>>
>>14051339
looks aren't everything
>Honestly, the 2001 M5 is the second worst BMW during that period in terms of reliability. Common problems include:
A/C compressor, injection system, fuel delivery system (including pump and relays) exhaust system failure (resulting in lost engine performance) central computer module, most electrical components, worn piston rings, leaking head gasket, cracked blocks, rear suspension failure (due to weak aluminum control arms), suspension bushings, rear wheel bearings (very common), worn drive shaft spider joints and steering pump.

not quite a shitbox because things do break, and things can go badly wrong if you don't do basic preventive maintenance, like a cooling system overhaul

but they're delightfully simple and fun to drive little pocket rockets that are halfway reliable and look great

i really want to get a well cared '98 328is some day as a little weekend car

>>14051800
oh shit is that a zionsville radiator?
if there's a metal impeller water pump and a zionsville expansion tank in there too, it will outlast the engine, and those engines go a long time

A stock BMW i6 can hold up to 600 hp easily...
literally almost every European pro drift car is either an E30, E34 or e36 using a turbo`d BMW inline six, rarely an LSx or a BMW V8
they have been using their cars for several years now... the only guys turboing Jap cars are americans or japs themselves simply because its cheaper and parts are more available

Only real picture I have with the cooling system in it. Never heard of that company but the expansion tank is factory. Not sure about water pump.
>>
>>14051860
ah, zionsville makes like super well built and welded all aluminum radiators + expansion tanks + electric fan kits that use a Spal fan (really high quality shit)

for my 540i a full conversion kit is $1300, but that basically guarantees zero cooling system issues for the next 150k at least
>>
>>14051872
Sounds like it'd be worth it once factory takes a shit
>>
>>14051872
1500 seems like a lot when a behr overhaul would be like 400

>>14052103
because something in that behr overhaul will break like a year later

if that were the case i wouldn't mind replacing that particular piece ahead of time with a stronger counterpart, like the aforementioned metal impeller.

323s arent the best for turbos because of vanos and more complicated engine management, but a non vanos 325i m50b25 is perfect

No way you bought that car in the picture for 4k without some serious issues
>>
>>14053731
yes, but its power would be coming from the belts not exhaust. I'd chose a turbo, but not on a 323. Grab a m50b25 and if possible, get some dished pistons and get that compression down, or just turbo it and throw hella fuel pressure at it. gotta love that no differential pressure life.

It's not just the engine, even the designs suffer. For some reason US spec Euro cars have to have 30 foot bumpers on the front and cars before the 90s couldn't have enclosed headlights (i.e headlights behind another layer of glass).

Go for it, OP. I've own a 328i and used to own a 320i. They were both excellent, reliable cars if you buy from the right seller and stay on top of maintenance. With the right tyres and suspension it'll outcorner a lot of modern sports cars.

shit no. i'm not him but i had a 320i that was just over 260k kms and it was fine. just keep up that regular maintenance and make sure the cooling system (radiator, water pump wtc) was overhauled at some point. the original pump had a plastic impeller which would fail, so make sure that has at least been replaced.

250,000 kms is just a bit over what both my cars have at the moment. Luckily I got both of mine from good owners who took care of them. There are just as many clapped out E36s with under 200k on the clock, you just have to make sure the car has been taken care of and it should be fine.

The E36 compact is identical to the sedan from the firewall forward so you can mount any BMW I6 offered in the E36 range including the M3 powerplants. You can also use Z3M rear suspension components to accept the larger, stronger diffs. Many people have done it, and rally drivers seem to prefer the compacts because of their short wheelbase.
