They, and most other manufacturers, have been doing that by simply taking mass-production engines from bigger vehicles and dropping it into their sporty cars.

To use your example of the Mustang... the only reason it has that engine and all that power, is because Ford just grabbed an off-the-shelf engine, designed and in production for their best selling vehicle, and tuned it a bit.

Subaru has no big-car engines to grab and stuff in an impreza (other than the EZ26, which is a total dog), and the sti doesn't sell enough units to justify any major R&D development for a unique engine.

305 horsepower is more than enough if the car is light enough. 1st gen STis could do 0-100 in ~5 seconds, and were overall just fast fucking cars. It's the weight that's the problem.

Refine the suspension, refine the aerodynamics, modernize the appearance. Why does it have to be so much fucking heavier? What is it? A Type R gc8 is like 1240kg, and it has pretty much all of the features that a modern STi has.

On my WRX, I had 5th gear synchro go out, 2nd gear synchro go out and 4th gear was on its way out when I traded it in. I never dropped the clutch nor did any silly shit like extreme gear changes. Iv been driving manuals for 6 years and in the 20k miles I owned that vehicle it had to have its transmision replaced twice and the clutch pedal was making an annoying as fuck squeeking sound.

The F-150 is being pushed toward EcoBoost and the 5.0 is going to be phased out in it.

The only reason it even got it was as a stopgap, because the Coyote WAS designed for use in the Mustang first and foremost. It's why the 5.0 was used first in the Mustang while the F-150 had to wait with the older modular motors.
