my ls1 burns oil too.

it doesn't consume a lot in volume but you can smell it

i have 5w20 in my car but its cold here

LS1's are pretty famous oil burners m8.

I check my LS3 at least 4 times a month, all is well at 46K. I think the on AFM motors seal up way better than the L99 tho
>>
>>14031713
You could also fix the engine instead of further damaging it.
>>
>>14032295
Are you kidding?
XXwXX is oil "weights".

catch can, homie.

The lower the number the less viscous.

iirc catch cans only stop oil from being spread into your manifolds and being burned

Doesn't stop blow by
>>
>>14032320
I still don't really understand blow by. All I know about it is my friend's WRX spits oil evenever he revs past 4k
>>
>>14032300
Not just ls1s pretty much all 3rd and 4th gen sbcs.
>>
>>14032329

Has to do with releasing oil pressure from the crank case to keep it from blowing IIRC

Has to do with the design of the piston rings, or so I was told why all the Northstar V8's fucking guzzled oil

Mine burns no oil and it sees red line trips almost daily

GM SBC's with AFM though are pretty bad about burning oil.

>Blow-by occurs when the explosion that occurs in your engine’s combustion chamber causes fuel, air and moisture to be forced past the rings into the crankcase. Your engine’s rings must maintain an excellent fit in order to contain the pressure.

The causes of blow-by: wear, soot and deposits

As rings and cylinder liners wear away they are less capable of maintaining this seal. Consequently as a car ages the amount of blow-by that occurs can increase.
Soot and deposits left over from incomplete combustion that collect on the rings can also inhibit their seal worsening blow-by.

The effects of blow-by: loss of horsepower and oil contamination and dilution

Blow-by inhibits performance because it results in a loss of compression. When the expanding gases slip past the rings they cannot as effectively push the piston down and make the vehicle go. As a result the car will have less horsepower. This also results in a loss of fuel economy.

When the fuel, air and moisture slip into the crankcase they contaminate and dilute the oil in the crankcase.

Among the many gasses in your compression chamber are unburned fuel, moisture, sulfur dioxide and soot. Once these gasses slip into your crankcase they can dilute into your engine causing great damage.

Neat

Neat indeed

I've always heard if you want to keep a LS SBC from drinking oil during it's life is to beat the shit out of it every now and again. Only time will tell though, mine has been excellent so far. I'll keep the daily dose of redlines on the regimen.

>tfw you learned something on /o/ before it turns into a corvette v gtr shit fest
>>
>>14032307
wtf is a catch can going to do..

>>14032329
blowby is when the piston rings are worn. pressure from the combustion blows by the rings into the crankcase = increased crankcase pressure. can cause gaskets to leak, valve seals and main seals to piss oil, etc.

>redline a day keeps the mechanic away
>>
>>14032414

A guy on the C5 ZL1 forums was complaining of oil smell. Once he passed break in he took it to a track day and said he never smelled oil ever again.

I think it's true for most engines that are even remotely performance oriented. They need the abuse every now and again.

Maybe if I start beating the shit out of my motor the oil pan gasket will stop leaking and the valve cover will be replaced(small ding where the gasket sits on the VC).
My car goes through a qt of oil every month.
This is a part of the reason why I want to put a 98-99 motor in my car. Gotta pull the engine, anyway..
>>
>>14032443

Sounds like beating it every month will help end the misery sudoku style lol
>>
>>14032443
Go full dagumi and blow the engine. Post results.
>>
>>14032451
You have no idea... I may just get it into acceptable running condition and buy an e30.

>mfw triple post

>>14033620
No worries, just honestly curious, I can't think of a better inert liquid than mineral water.
Dunno what the boiling/freezing point is though
>>
>>14033669
I don't know enough about oil viscosity, but I'm sure you're on to something with the whole boiling and freezing thing.
>>
My LS1 starts burning oil just as its reaching it's 10,000km interval. Then it stops with an oil change. I think that's just LS life.
