parts cost arent much higher, maybe 20-30% on certain things and equal on most things especially from old models. i buy all my shit from pelican parts and i've done cost comparisons on typical replacement items like water pumps, cvs, rotors, calipers, etc and they aren't much different. most of the cost difference is when you're trying to compare a 2 piston civic caliper to a 6 piston bmw caliper.. or a 250mm rotor to a 300mm vented rotor or something like that.

a better solution would just be to tell op to go to pelican parts and do some cost comparisons.

Avoid the S series Mercedes, they're the cars that generate the "German cars cost serious money to maintain". Also, Audi, fuck Audi.

The e39 is a drivers car, not a comfy one. I mean, it is comfy. But its not a Lexus LS. But then again, neither are most Mercedes. They're planted, heavy cars, with leather interiors.

All I've replaced on my e39 was a Catalytic converter that I welded in place myself, an idler pulley, spark plugs, and an ignition coil. Mine was well maintained when I bought it, but its got over 160k miles on it now, and shit isn't falling off like many of the dumb fucks here told me they would when I asked about it way back in the day.

I don't really see you walking into a catastrophe unless you buy something that's been dogged on by some idiot.

Acura TL's are sexy cars. Unfortunately they have transaxles made of glass.

I recommend you test drive whatever catches you eye and decide which one fits "you" better.

A record of all services done is so worth a car with even 200k miles. If the compression is good, the clutch doesn't slip, the tranny is solid, the timing/serpentine belt replaced/COOLING SYSTEM replaced/upgraded, the suspension in working order, power steering in order, ac and other nuances in check... ITS ALL WORTH IT IF THE RECORDS ARE THERE.

Unless you're going to the dealership for literally everything up to and including refilling your wiper fluid, you'll never get anywhere near that. If you go to an indy shop, you might reach $1k per year. If you can do basic shit yourself (think turning bolts and attaching hoses) you might break $400-$500 if you're really unlucky.
Here's my preventative maintenance schedule for E39s:
replace everything that has filter in its name once a year
replace everything that has pump in its name every 3 years
replace spark plugs when you feel like it needs it
change your fucking oil
keep your fucking fluids topped up
if you can't do that shit, get the fuck off this board.
The M54 has to be one of the most maintenance-free BMW engines ever.

here's the widespread issues with the series that basically every model is guaranteed to have

Pretty much all E39s will have had #1 fixed at this point, just make sure that they didn't use OEM replacement parts because you'll run into the exact same issue again. This is the only issue that I would consider "major".
Very few will have had #2 or #3 done. Neither of these are huge issues, VANOS seals will cause you to lose a little bit of power at the low end and the instrument cluster is just visually annoying. Have your mechanic fix both unless you're brave, these are both fairly involved to fix. probably 3-4 hours labor total, parts are $60 and $30 respectively.
Rust at the jack points is to be expected given the age of these cars, just make sure the frame isn't completely rusted through

To the OP specifically, you have a good budget if you want an E39. The 540i is an absolute God machine, but the 530i is more than enough if you're not actually looking to set lap times. Almost as fast, but you'll be saving good on gas. My suggestion is to make sure that the cooling systems work, the E39 doesn't have a good tolerance if you overheat it, it's a performance engine. Not as touchy as the 528's straight six though, I had some serious ass clenching when I overheated mine. The aftermarket is really great for the cars. You'll have more boot space than you need. You'll be comfy as fuck, but E39's in general still retain a sporty feel. Honestly the best BMW I've ever sat in, this was BMW's golden age.
