I think I messed up, I purchased the wrong size tire and I'm not sure if they're compatible.

>2006 Volvo XC90 2.5
>Original: 235/65/17
>Purchased: 245/65/17

I know literally nothing about tires, does the larger tread width mean they shouldn't be installed; I'm replacing all 4 tires
>>
10mm is no big deal, you're fine.
>>
>>14012821
it can be done by a more ghettoshop. it will also make your speedometer extremely inaccurate.since its wider that means it will be about 15% wrong saying youre slower than youre actually going
>>
>>14012831
Are you fucking retarded or is this le ebin trolling?
>>
>>14012828
anon is right. you will be fine. You could of gone several time bigger and been fine. I like big chunky tires on suvs. Not great for gas millage, but good for traction in incitement weather. But mostly it gives the vehical a tougher look
>>
>>14012843
No, he's not retarded. His speedometer accuracy will be affected due to the tire's larger diameter. It will probably not be too bad, but OP should check it with GPS.
>>
>>14012828

>>14012831

Are you sure its an entire 15%? I read that it was less, some sites are listing a much smaller difference
> Reading at 60mph: 60mph - 58.76mph

How will they fit on the rims, wouldn't the width mess them up?
>>
>>14012831
>>14012843
guy has no idea what hes talking about.

>extremely inaccurate
lemme guess you're into cars but haven't actually modified anything on your own car, and barely even know the basics of simple maintenance jobs.
>>
>>14012848
You can usually get a good bit more tire on a stock rim, especially with those big fat 65 profiles. They're fine, don't stress :)
>>
>>14012848
10mm is nothing, you have a bit of room to play with on any wheel, narrower or wider than "ideal". That 15 percent thing is bogus, you might be 1 or 2 mph off.
>>
>>14012848
any reputable shop wouldnt dare put them on your car, you would have to find a niggershop to do it for insurance purposes, the tire could unbead anytime because its the wrong size.
>>
>>14012848
No. width will be fine. They will fit on the wheels just fine, but with a big more shoulder, which honestly just means better protection from road rash on your wheels.

there's nothing to worry about. speedo inaccuracy wont be noticeable.
>>
>>14012859
plz stop posting if you're just going to say incorrect things.
>>
His speedo will be affected but it's very minute because he has the same aspect ratio. Even if he used 70/17 it won't be that much of a difference
>>
Won't cause even the slightest problem.

245/235 = 1.04256

Because you have a wider tire with the same profile, the tire is now larger. Your speedometer will read about 4% slower than your actual speed. At 80mph this is a difference of 3.4mph. Try to keep this in mind when you're looking out for Johnny Law.
>>
>itt retards

Idiots like my coworker get away with absurdly stretched tires for a reason

Tire fitment is by no means a precise art. The only things that are truly important as far as safety goes are
>tire inner diameter matches rim diameter
>sidewalls need to not be stretched significantly (don't try to put a 195/65R15 on a 15 x 8, etc)

10mm wider will maybe throw your speedo off 1-5mph, but the XC90 is probably AWD, which means you need the same tire size at all 4 corners. Hell, you shouldn't even have unevenly worn tires (1 tire new mixed with a set of 3 old).
>>
>>14012874
>His speedo will be affected but it's very minute because he has the same aspect ratio
That's not how that work.
>>
>>14012859

Any reputable shop would know you're talking out of your ass.

That's what I'm thinking but the other guys have me stressed now

I'll call in my local dealership tomorrow morning and see if they'll install them; if they will than I'll just go with it but if not I'll bite the bullet and get new ones.

They're for my moms car, if it was mine I wouldn't give a shit but I don't want to dick around with her safety and half ass it.

Miata stock tires are 185/60R14. I was until recently running 195/60R14. These tires were good up to about 145mph road speed (141mph indicated), at which point it would lazily bounce off the rev limiter. No debeading or other problems were noted.

they're going to laugh at you when you called. Don't let /o/ fool you bud.
>>
>>14012907
He's full of shit it's perfectly safe. They are literally 1 cm wider, that's it. That's nothing.
>>
>>14012907
>dealership
Good way to get ripped off. Take them to any random-ass chain repair place. I used to use a Meineke for tire mounting, alignment, and other stuff I couldn't do myself.
>>
>>14012916
>They are literally 1 cm wider, that's it.
And taller.

Yes, so the car will be 1 or 2 mph off in the speedometer, he's fine.
>>
>>14012911
theres never going to be a problem (under normal operating conditions) with debeading unless you're running tires that are like 50+ mm off.

Tire manufactures measure their tires like shoe companies do shoes. One company can run smaller than another. its extremely common. A 135 and 145 can be exactly the same size depending on brand.
>>
>>14012821

Uh yeah you're gonna want to not put those on. If they aren't the right size they have a nasty habit of slipping and then you're driving on 3 tires on the freeway going 75.

Tires are the number 1 most significant part of the car that controls your speed, direction, and safety. Don't fuck it up.

I know. I just wanted to provide an example of that guy being wrong. I think I was something like 20mph over the speed rating too, another number with a lot of slop built in.
>>
>>14012952
>1cm(0.4 inches) wider tires are gonna make you crash

Are you a fucking moron?
>>
technically they're better. Probably a bit better traction in most situations. tiny fucking difference.
>>
>>14013055

It's you're funeral. Don't have any family or friends in the car if you're going to put their lives in danger. Worse than driving drunk.
>>
>>14013076
They are actually better fuckface. You do understand that wider is better for anything but piles of snow. And in a snowy situation the worst that they'll do is make you spin your wheels when taking off.

This board needs to control who can post, too many idiots.
>>
>>14012963
>I was just pretending to be retarded!
>>
>>14013156

Your face needs wider tires
>>
>>14012821
I just want to give you some legitimate advice.
They will be fine, absolutely fine.
The first number (245) is the width, the second (65) is the aspect ratio, and is measured as a percentage of the first number.
So the 245/65r17 tires are literally 6.5mm taller.
(245x0.65)-(235x0.65)=6.5
And I mean 6.5 mm because you measure from the center of the wheel, not the total height.
The width will affect nothing but your traction.
Although if your car measures tire pressure through the wheel speed sensors your TPMS light will come on.
>>
>>14013189

>Although if your car measures tire pressure through the wheel speed sensors your TPMS light will come on.

I doubt it does, hasn't been a problem so far.

Awesome alright I'm putting them on, thanks for all the help guys.
