If this is difficult you should kys anon. And why press the clutch in twice instead of just holding down the clutch while rev matching?
>>
I'm going to be getting a manual lesson in a couple days. How is this any better than a regular downshift?

why.

this
The only time I ever double clutch is when I'm driving my dads 1931 Model A because the transmission isn't synchronized

there is no reason to do it on any modern car, and it certainly doesn't make you a
>better driver
>>
>>14012410
its not. Double clutching is only beneficial when you're driving an unsynchronized manual. Which hasn't been a thing since the 50s.
>>
>>14012390
>not being able to perfectly rev match downshift
Step it up kouhai.

>>
>>14012390
Piss off, kek - this shit is second nature to anyone who has been using a manual tranny for their entire driving life.
>>
why would you do this with a modern Trans?
>>
Nearly everyone on earth is a better driver than the average /o/ poster. The average /o/ poster -
-has less than 2 years driving experience
-has never attended any kind of performance driving event
-has never been involved in any kind of performance driving education
-drives a FWD economy car
and worst of all
-thinks they are a great driver

There's a reason insurance rates are the highest for 16-25 year old males, and no you are not the exception because you play Need for Speed every day.
>>
>>14012405
Holding the clutch down and rev matching burns the clutch.

Nonetheless I still do it. As its a bitch to double clutch with a synchro box, it takes too long.
>>
>>14012770
I've been driving for 8 years now
been to a track event
had an instructor at the aforementioned track event, had some coaching and what not, otherwise nothing formal
not FWD economy car
I don't assume I'm the best driver, but I'd like to think I can operate a manual transmission better than the average idiot
>>
>>14012776
what the in the name of fuck are you talking about?

Rev matching is matching engine speed and transmission speed.

Double clutch rev matching is just taking that one step further by de-clutching, neutral, engage the clutch to bring up the transmission input shaft speed in relation to engine RPM, de-clutch, select your gear then engage clutch. Add a throttle blip somewhere in there too
>>
>>14012770
Any thread where people try to talk about driving techniques is proof of your claims t,bh
And not even driving fast, just talking about normal every day driving you can see how little experience they have
>>
ive outrun my fair share of cops so i cant be that bad....
>>
>>14012776
you're retarded
>>
>>14012776
>Holding the clutch down and rev matching burns the clutch.

Not at all. By depressing the clutch pedal, you disengage the clutch. Assuming you're not a dumbass who only presses the clutch to the bite point on a rev match (does anyone do this, ever?), it's not in contact and has no effect on clutch at all.
>>
>>14012390
If she's a better driver than you just for knowing how to downshift then you've got some serious gitting gud to do son.
>>
>>14012776
This is all wrong. The clutch wears from slipping. When the clutch is disengaged, it's not slipping. The limiting factor in a synchromesh transmission is not how quickly you can kick the clutch in and out or how quickly you can move your hand between the gear positions. It's how long the synchronizers take to spin up or down the input shaft. It's difficult to train yourself to double clutch faster than the synchronizers function, but it's within human limits.

Can someone explain to me the point of double-shifting? Especially when you downshift.

I mean, i usually press the clutch, blip the throttle to bring the engine revs to about what's needed and i release the clutch. The result is a smooth down-shift that you can barely feel, if at all. What will this extra step of releasing while in neutral going to give?

Can someone please explain why people do this? I really don't see the point. Is it that it's easier to rev match when you do this? Or is it just fastnfurious-esque wannabe racecar driver bullshit? I have to assume it's the latter...

What i've always done is:
>depress clutch
>downshift + throttle blip
>engage clutch

This is how i've always done it and i honestly can't see any benefit to this double-clutching BS. It doesn't wear the clutch any less (if anything, you'd think it wears it even more) and takes more time and effort. Especially more effort when your car has a stiff ass mechanical clutch like mine.

Absolutely not. It's a total goddamn waste of time. It's like learning Latin except less impressive and with even fewer practical applications. When something is a FnF meme it's always for a good reason.

Learn heel-toe because that at least takes some skill and dexterity. You'll almost never use that either, but at least learning it will make you feel accomplished.

It's all about matching the speeds of the input shaft and gears on the output shaft. Let's say you are upshifting from 2nd gear at 4000rpm to 3rd gear at 2000rpm. When you push in the clutch, the input shaft will be spinning around 4000rpm. Meanwhile, the gear for 3rd is only going to be spinning around 2000rpm. When you shift into 3rd, the input shaft has to slow down to 2000rpm in an instant. But this is what synchros are for.

With an unsynchronized transmission like in semi trucks and older cars, the gears travelling at different speeds will never mesh unless you double clutch. So when you're at 4000rpm in 2nd, you push in the clutch and shift to N. Them release the clutch in N as the revs are falling down toward 2000rpm. This way, the engine is still connected to the input shaft and the gearbox and forces all of the gears to slow down as well along with the revs. Then you push the clutch in again, and the input shaft, 3rd gear, output shaft, end engine should all be around 2000rpm and the gears will mesh smoothly.
>>
>>14013570
Okay but what about the throttle blip in that case? What's the point of that, in an up-shift? Isn't that counter-productive, as by doing so, you are increasing engine RPM?
>>
>>14013632
That's for downshifting. Basically the same thing on engines without synchros. Downshifting from 2000rpm in 3rd to 4000rpm in 2nd, the gear for 2nd is going to be spinning at 4000rpm at those speeds while the input shaft is only spinning at 2000rpm. So you shift from 3rd to N, release clutch so engine is connected to gearbox, rev to 4000rpm to get the input shaft and gears up to speed, then clutch again and into 2nd and the engine and all the gears will all be at 4000rpm and mesh smoothly.

But even in a car with synchros, rev-matching while downshifting is still a good idea. You don't need to double clutch, but rev matching will create a smooth shift. When you downshift from 3rd gear to 2nd gear without revving, the whole drivetrain wants to spin the engine up from 2000rpm to 4000rpm in a split second. This will cause the car to jerk and slow down really quick. Plus that is a lot of force going back through the drivetrain and will probably stress the synchro rings...

>>14013632
>>14013707
So tl;dr:

The throttle blip is only on downshifting. Upshifting, you want the revs to fall when you are in between gears.
>>
>>14013002
tep kok
>>
>>14013512
>>14012390
I keep thinking about this and I'm confused. Is there even a purpose to double-clutch while shifting in a track car or while racing? I still don't get it.

If there is a real reason where you don't want to rely on the synchros, why not just git gud and float the gears without any clutch at all? Now that's the real way to shift on the toe-gay! Float en!
>>
>>14012776
If you mean puts some slight wear on the throwout bearing... suuuure.
>>
If I try some spirited driving in my old honda, how likely is it that I'll fuck up my synchros, or some other part of the transmission? My car has been making funny noises and I'm scared.
>>
>>14013885
Only one way to find out...
>>
>>14013739
Trucker here.

Tl;DR is that if you are in a lightweight car with syncros, it doesn't fucking matter. If you are in a vehicle that needs to produce a lot of torque (pickup towing a large trailer), or has a transmission without syncros, you double clutch. Almost all manual semi's will not have syncros because they cannot handle the amount of torque required to pull 80,000 pounds of shit around, and last hundreds of thousands of miles.

I'm required to double clutch on every single gear change no matter what the circumstances or I will grind my transmission when driving my semi. I never double clutch in my car. It's a waste of time.

I try to double clutch, my integra I'd pushing 400k km and the previous owners sure as hell didn't do it. Have to DC going into second, first and third. It'll even grind in 5th if I try to jam it in there fast enough. It's not even really a double clutch anymore. I just pull off the gas a bit and the stick slides right out of gear. Blip the gas and then clutch in and I'm shifted.
